@@helium-379 True, and I do love warhammers, but you still have to worry about edg... no, not really edge alignment, it doesn't have an edge. Mallet or beak alignment? Face alignment? Maces don't have a front side, that's what I'm saying. I'm large and bulky - it's not always easy to make sure a weapon is facing the same way when half of the reach your stubby arms get is taken up by reaching the center line so you can smack your opponent in the face and your fine motor control is borderline nonexistent to the point of handwriting being physically agonizing. Maces you can hit with any part of the head facing any direction and it still works fine. And while hammers are more effective at getting through armor, maces tend to have more impact behind them, meaning a lighter blow can do as much damage, and can even disable an armored opponent without having to actually pierce their armor. Plus they're simpler and cheaper to manufacture, repair, rehaft, et cetera. Plus maces show up as early as the bronze age (maybe earlier but my familiarity with prehistoric warfare is lacking) so you can get away with them in most time periods (as long as you aren't trying to pass for Republican, Principate, or Dominate Western Roman, or Hellenistic), whereas warhammers are mostly late medieval and renaissance weapons. So from a reenacting, LARPing, collecting, et cetera, perspective, there's more wiggle room and generally more variety.

It comes from the Royal Navy. During engagements with the Dutch Navy it was noted that the Dutch crews were given a healthy measure of strong Rum or Brandy before battle and fought more bravely because of it. The Royal Navy adopted the tradition and the measure of Rum traditionally issued to each man before battle was often refered to as "Dutch Courage".

Lindy, have you ever danced Argentine Tango? I have danced it for years and enjoy it a great deal. Unlike other dances, Tango developed a method of initiating dance which effectively sidesteps a lot of the issues you have outlined. It is called Cabeceo. Simply put, men "ask" women to dance, not the other way around. Though for a women to be "asked" to dance she has to look like she is wanting to dance. The process of "asking" a woman to dance goes something like this: The man looks/stares at the woman; she notices this and meets his gaze; he then makes some sort of subtle gesture in his own style motioning to the dance floor; she keeps looking at him, maybe smiling, nodding or whatever (in her own personal style); he then approaches her (often walking around the dance floor to do this) and keeps staring at her so she knows he is looking at *her* and not another woman nearby; as he gets close, she rises to meet him and they go to the dance floor together. If at any time the woman looks away, that's a no. Except that in tango a "no" doesn't mean "no chance in hell!" It could do. But it's just as likely to mean "not right now" or "I'm not sure about you yet". A woman has the right to reject any man at any time and is in no way obliged to explain her reasons. Which is fair. While a man who understands the system won't get upset over being rejected. He knows that her no isn't a judgement of him in the way you talk about in the video. The beauty of this system is that the whole process of "asking" and accepting/rejecting is both public AND private at the same time. A man doesn't have to work up his courage to go ask a woman sitting with all of her friends to dance. A woman isn't placed in the awkward situation of either having to refuse and publicly embarrass a man or end up dancing with a man she doesn't like "just to be polite". Both sides feel like they're in control. A man can ask any woman (including those who are "with" another man) without fear or repercussions. A woman can reject any man she chooses, once again without any negative consequences. Even without anyone even knowing it happened. Of course, there are some who feel that this is sexist since a woman isn't supposed to "ask" a man to dance. But women who want to dance with a particular man always manage to find a way around this. Plus, women are always free to dance in the man's "role", if they know how. When a Cabeceo is successful, observers who don't understand it think its almost magical. "How did that happen?" they ask. And when an offer is refused, those same observers never even notice. Instead all they see is a man walking to the bar. What actually happened is that he approached a woman, and when he came close enough for her to realize that she was looking at *her* she decided "no thanks" for whatever reason and looked away. He then walked on past her to the bar like that was his intention all along. Note also that when I say that a couple dances, this is typically for whatever is left of the tanda - 3/4 songs of the same style of Tango. Once the tanda ends, the dancing couples usually separate and the Cabeceo process begins again. So even if you're not sure about a new partner, you're not committing to *that* much time spent together. If it goes well for both of you, you can "ask" again later and she may respond more enthusiastically this time. If it doesn't go too well, you may not want to "ask" her again or be politely turned down. It's a very civilized system, and takes away a great deal of the fear and social pressure which you have (correctly) talked about in this video.

This is also sidestepped by communal dances like reels, schottisches (sp?) and the adaptation here in the Colonies called "square dancing", where the commitment to a partner is disguised by swapping off. Of course, a lot of those dances is all about concealing the underlying sexual character of the dancing.

Understanding the 'Fear' thing totally. In my case it's similar to my dislike of heights in that it's more visceral than articulable. You couldn't get me on a dance floor at gunpoint or with a cattle prod. Physically dragging me is probably the only way you might succeed. Putting things together from Lindy's vid I suppose it stems from some part of my brain knowing that as a Chap of below average looks, little coordination and a scorching case of RBF, I don't need another strike against me. Dancing is peculiar in that you may be required to demonstrate your inability. People will take your word if you tell them that you can't fly a plane or speak Cantonese but not necessarily with dancing..

Well, in Hrolf Kraki's Saga, his father did just that (bring hundreds of your friends and a shitton of weapons) when "courting" a (pirate) princess. Of course, it didn't turn out particularly well, with a typically saga sort of soap opera before everybody dies, bravely on one side and stupidly on the bad guys side (and with a bit of accidental incest for fun), but it obviously happened _sometime_ other than in Shakespeare's Henry V.

Lindy's point (about men dancing in groups) is made in an interesting way by the historical record, at least in one instance. Ancient Spartan men learned to dance as groups, both to inculcate the list of skills that Lindy mentions, but also to inculcate another subtle quality which can tend to have dramatic, demonstrable results, and did especially in hoplite/phalanx combat: morale/esprit de corps/élan/whatchamacallit.

While it's interesting theory I have to disagree. Dancing shows off very many skills which speak of the other person being a good partner. Dancing is very physical, so dancing shows of the physical endurance of the dancers. Coolest dance moves test require skill, dexterity and dedication to learn. And as such Dancing shows off your ability to learn arbitrary skills. Knowing what's 'hot' requires social connectivity and ability to read culture and trends. Approaching girls in the dance floors tests your boldness and confidence as well as social tact. While dancing you are broad casting who you are interested in - making it hard to have secret relationships. At least among the other people dancing with you. Dancing also test non-verbal communication. Dancing shows off how your social standing. People in your group often encourage your dancing and you encourage them as well. Showing mastery of these skills apply to wide variety of human interactions. Fighting being among them, but I think it's far to simplistic to say that dancing is mainly there to promote your fighting skills.
@namewarvergeben
@namewarvergeben 6 жыл бұрын
Communication skills would only develop later in a species, while fighting skills are important for survival even at the most primal level. So I think it holds up, as something that the earliest of "dancers" (talking tens of thousands of years ago) would see as something like a mock-fight, and all the other connotations came later as humans evolved more complex social behaviour.

all you said lindy did also but with explanations how it fits beside the fighting....and i find nothing in your comment that contradicts anything of the theorie, i find it all supports it rather^^ ..and i would not say that he claimed " that dancing is mainly there to promote fighting skills"...by the side the hypothesis is true with 99.9% chanche....from someone who nows a lot about that stuff^^ one or two of the testable conclusions have a high possibility in my opinion to fall somewhat on a different result...but the fundamental thesis is very good and many of the conclusions will be found in real data quite near the predicted ideas.........

For example Confidence, co-ordination or how humble or how much of a show off they were to name a few. He explained it. Women want men that can fight but dont fight unless necessary. Fighting means conflict and conflict means enemies. They want to know that the man can take care of them and their families, if needed but that doesnt mean they want to see them fight. They want to see their physical ability and dancing demonstrates that in non violent manner that women enjoy to watch.

(again reduces fights and riots in audience)

I've always been complimented by women since high school about how well I dance. It gave me lots of female attention, which was awesome. They always wanted to talk to me because of that ... but most of them quickly lost interest when I kept treating them as if they were interested in deep discussions. Likewise, I'm attracted to women until I start talking to them, at which point I want to leave before I die of boredom. I've dated intellectual women and tend to gravitate to intellectual women, but at the end of the day, they stop caring about all of that and start talking about feelings. I've entertained those discussions left, right, and center in every possible way I can think of, bending over backwards to emotionally understand her, but it doesn't do any good, and I just end up walking away from that mess. I've also experimented not caring about women's feelings like some badass rogue, but I've found that intolerable too, and I just have to walk away because I just can't stand it. In the end, as sexy as women are, they have somehow managed to make me not care about them anymore. They need to make themselves more attractive if I'm going to go through the motions to procreate with one of them. Until that happens, I'm not doing their little dance. (FYI, I've made peace that nothing will change ... sadly, I've never been happier in my life ... but if anyone has any suggestions how not to go MGTOW, please share your ideas)

I think what you are looking for is a heuristic rather than a theory of the contextual relevance of dance. Also, one of the reasons fewer women rate dancers as more valuable is because we are actually, as humans, rather more conscious of the proxies that people are using to select us, and thus the less important physical prowess is for sustaining a life the less important dancing is as a proxy for things like fighting. Here is an article I've written on the subject of competitive proxies. It's the definition of a heuristic for understanding the game dynamics that lead to stable equilibria (Nash equilibria) between competing parties, which lays out the meta rules for all competitive proxies, which links together in infinitely complex networks of association and function to generate complex civilisations. And that is all based upon the fundamental difference between human beings and animals, which is that we can observe the selection criteria that other people are using to discriminate between us and our competitors and thus adapt, or evolve in real time, in a single life-time, where as animals evolve over multiple generations. medium.com/@ciaran_92884/hierarchies-of-competence-competitive-proxies-and-the-conscious-generation-of-the-collective-df68e67bad03

Women tend towards polygamy, meaning less men have children (the top males will get almost all females) but that apparently has more downsides than monogamy since polygamous societies are more violent and the kids don't grow as successful.

@@cezariusus7595 I think women tend more to monogamy (it offers a certain caretaker, only for her and her children) in combination with affairs. While yes, the women want the top men as the father, but it is useless to them if he won't take care and provide for them. So they want a single, dedicated caretaker, but are open for illegitimate encounters, since they get to raise fitter children and still have a caretaker.

I would probably add one more reason for dancing being a thing humans like to do. It's great for making sure people in the community get to meet each other personally. Even in small tribes, I would imagine not everyone has the opportunity to meet every tribe member (unless the tribe is incredibly small) because they all are busy with whatever tasks they need to do to keep the tribe alive. And this is even more important for larger societies. A more modern example are the endless dances organised in Victorian Britain in order to make sure that everyone fro the same class would meet each other and potential match making could occur. Even nowadays, people often go to dance clubs to make friends and meet potential partners.

I am very thankful for this video. I have been interested in evolutionary biology from a young age. And as I grew up thought it was so obvious dancing was a programmed mating ritual it was embarrassing, awkward and fascinating all at the same time. And was endlessly stunned that so few people openly acknowledged the obvious reality. Something I found frustrating about the contemporary version of the ritual is the complete lack of structure or objective. I would never admit it but I am still resentful about it to this day. I practice martial arts. I have a body that is relatively good for protecting and I can be bold. But I tend to feel lost. What do I do now? How do I make it work? Mind of a software engineer is supposed. You might say the process has been further femanised. I know I could beat up most men. I believe I could have been a good dancer in another era. But am a terrible dancer by contemporary standards. The ritual may no longer function but I suspect there is something deeper I don't see. Any response would be very much appreciated.

I'm not an expert by any means, so keep in mind that this is only my point of view. Humans tend to push things to their extreme (Thus pushing away from their original purpose, transforming it into something else entirely). Besides, currently, the whole point seems to physically embody the music, not demonstrate that you are good at something. ( Wich, to me, explains the fact that most current dance styles are solo) English isn't my first language, if anything I wrote seems unclear, it most likely is, so please tell me!

I remain sceptical - the hypothesis presented is that dance originally evolved as a means to assess mates, but most of the examples given are tightly linked to cultural developments that would have needed to come *after* a widespread habit of dancing was already established (whether that's the culture of a British nightclub or a courtly dance; or even the norm of arriving to a dance freshly washed). I'm not seeing a lot that would give an adaptive advantage to the first original handful of mutants to feel an urge to dance amid a general population that doesn't, and that wouldn't necessarily think to look to dancing as a demonstration of physical aptitude. Would find it easier to believe that it secondarily developed into a means of judging mates (along with all the associated cultural baggage), after having first appeared for other reasons.

I think it's possible the dance and martial arts have a common ancestor. They probably started from sitting around a campfire and recounting various tales of hunting and warfare. As they were telling the tales, they likely acted out the various moves or techniques that they used in a successful hunt or battle, and it then gradually became ritualized. The mating aspect then was likely an exaptation of an already existing phenomenon.

One of my great friends was put down a lot at school for being a bit of a nerd. But at school discos, and the school prom, he completely owned the dancefloor. He became infamous for his dancing, even having a dance named after him at school: The "John-Dance" (not his name). Thinking about it, he was a black belt in karate, which makes more sense now. Unsurprisingly, when we moved to college, he got a girlfriend *very* quickly.

I have 2 remarks regarding your logic. In the exemple of the jumping up and down dance : you assume the dance form is chosen by men. I'd argue that men actually would all choose the dance that gives themself the best looks. So basically, the fit guy would dance jumping up & down, but other men would probably dance whatever they feel advantaged for. Maybe, chosing which dance style is winning is actually the women's choice. Regarding polyginy, I don't think it would change anything actually, and I don't understand at all why you say it's rubbish for men. Men wouldn't want to level the plane field at all. They'd just want to be the "winning one" just like in any other society.

With regards to polygamy, a LOT of guys lose out. I would theorize that the likelihood of not being "one of the few" outweighs the rewards associated with winning out. Also, most guy are rubbish dancers, so the majority of them would prefer an activity that doesn't highlight their deficiencies
@RandyKalff

On the topic of polygamy, towards both Poio and Erik, I have a comment. In polygamy most men lose out, so the men at the bottom have a clear incentive to play tricks. However, this doesn't explain why their dance styles are supposedly more in unison as well as you may think. After all, the rewards are great for those who succeed. What I argue is that the men who would otherwise lose out would rather go for a strategy where they win as opposed to one where they at least don't lose. This could mean trying to get a style of dance that they happen to be good at mainstream within the group. Of course if that strategy fails, the least they can do is tear down the successful men. Though, I doubt they'd utilize dance for that a lot given there are plenty of other ways to do so.

Guys, polygyny is a losing strategy for the SPECIES. It benefits certain individuals, but polygyny leaves a giant problem of male aggression. You end up with a large group of sex starved people. Not only that, but taking care of many wives is very difficult. You need affluence which will garner even more resentment. It's an unstable system. Pairing up is much more effective for regulating male behaviour and for ensuring successful offspring.

I agree with most of this but the style thing with fighting is a bit of a moot point imo. Very few people "show off some moves" or square up before a fight, they usually start with a sucker punch or a stare to the ground. Humans are naturally not strikers either, without training or prior knowledge we tend to wrestle and grab which is a far more effective strategy (even when you are trained in most cases). Also the rhythm comparison isn't exactly directly related. In fighting you're manipulating rhythm and breaking timing to throw your opponent off. Keeping rhythm is bad in fighting, you want to be choppy and unorthodox. Timing and rhythm in dance is different cause you're trying to stick to a pattern. tldr Lots of people are great athletes and fighters but awful dancers because they lack the ability to stick to a rhythm or beat.
@ambalon
@ambalon 6 жыл бұрын
To manipulate rhythm you must understand rhythm. People will naturally play in music in 4/4 full of quarter and maybe half and eighth notes if they're daring, but it takes learning to be able to break it down into odd time signatures, triplets, etc. Understanding rhythm is indeed very important to a fighter, just look at a boxer's footwork.
@dtraindaimyo3377
@dtraindaimyo3377 6 жыл бұрын
whybother Sure, I'll look at my feet next time I'm sparring. I get what you're saying but it's just painfully incorrect. You don't throw 1, 2, switch kick to a metronome's beats like you'd play the first three notes of a scale, nobody will fight like that unless they enjoy going out on their feet. You throw them at completely different intervals to throw people off just like any other combo. You might throw your 1, pause of a short unspecified moment of time, throw a 2, then immediately circle off to switch and launch your left leg. If you throw the same combo again you need to change up your intervals, the more sporadic and random the better. If your opponent is being predictable and doing the same pattern over and over again to a beat (not common when experienced)-- that's about the one time you actually need to read somebody's rhythm. Visual queues are far more important while fighting. It's better to look at their bad habits and mannerisms when they're throwing a single technique, then set them up to exploit it. I'm going to be a cunt here but tbh Lindy shouldn't talk about fighting anymore until he's actually had some real fighting experience. I shouldn't make assumptions but as someone who's wrestled, kickboxed, and lived combat sports his whole life... It's easy for me to say he gets a lot wrong and missleads others.
