Coating a 3D printed shell with red glass forged carbon fiber fabric, no vacuum bag required.
0:10 Making a template by covering the item in masking tape.
0:23 Covering the shell bottom to keep overlapping carbon fiber from sticking.
0:38 Molding clay on release plastic into the center grooves so the carbon fiber fabric can be compressed into the details during cure.
0:58 Cutting out pattern pieces from glass forged fabric. Inner edges are torn instead of cut so the overlapping joints will blend seamlessly into the pattern.
1:25 Adding epoxy resin to backs of pieces and positioning on part using silicone release coated nylon peel ply.
2:41 Laying small pieces of non-porous peel ply over the fabric to keep it resin rich.
3:04 Placing the clay block into the center to press fabric into fine details.
3:10 Wrapping shrink tape around part and heating to compress.
4:29 Removing shrink tape, clay and peel ply from fully cured parts.
5:28 Sanding overhanging edges and front surface to smooth part.
6:41 Adding coats of epoxy resin to get a good cosmetic finish.
8:27 Red glass forged carbon fiber skinned nautilus shell with wooden display stand.

Hi any idea how I could make a large nautilus shell like this one at 4 or 5 foot high in fibreglass or similar.....I'm stumped! 🤔 Many Thanks.

Most straightforward way that comes to mind would be build a hardware cloth frame with wood or pvc bracing as needed, cover in spray foam/paper mache to get the shape then if you need it stronger you could laminate fiberglass over that.

Cool vid, try making a negative mould then gel coat it…wax or use a release agent, then Lay the carbon inside the moulds then use a simple vacuum bag to compress the fibre into the mould. The end result should way less finishing work and the gel coat will give you super smooth finish.

what kind of adhesive film did you use to cover the bottom of the mold?

Wow, that's incredibly beautiful. Nice work! There's a 3d printed nautilus speaker design that did the rounds a few years ago. I think if you combined that with this incredible finish there are people who'd pay crazy money for it. Art and audio are two worlds where prices have no bounds, and this is right up there where beautiful art is concerned! Just awesome. And some very cool techniques. I always find it genius when someone sands an edge for a clean cut, yet I'm usually too stupid to remember to do it myself. The shrink tape was cool too. I thought you were just taping it up at first but then you heated it and I got it. That's not just sellotape then, is it? What do they call that product? Also just coating the outside with your finger and spatula got an unimaginably good result! There's definitely something clever/major skill at play there. Is the layer applied with stick the same batch, let to get tacky so it doesn't run when applied so thickly, but still evens out, or what?? In my limited experience that would usually be a puddle or a lumpy mess. Super impressed, as usual ;-)

It's called hi shrink tape and works pretty great as a vac bag alternative. Yes, that was the same batch of long set resin left at room temp overnight while the shells were in a box with a space heater to cure fast, so the resin gets thicker for the next coat. I did a couple more thin coats after that and sanding/polishing to remove small imperfections.

Thought this was a turbo charger. Interesting application though I doubt it would hold up to temperature, or heat exchange. Looks beautiful though.

that would be all up to the resin used.. you can get high temp resins that in theory would be fine

Very nice work. Do you find the carbon fiber/resin adhere and have a strong bond to the PLA(or whatever material you 3d printed)? Are you using epoxy resin or polyester?
@LindyDesignLab
@LindyDesignLab 3 жыл бұрын
Epoxy resin. The filament is matte fiber htpla which bonds very well due to the fibers.

@@LindyDesignLab thank you. I'm just getting started with printing, and had a few ideas for my car I wanted to use the filament as the core. I appreciate your response.
