Lol, I got that same "More Beef" feeling at 4:16 - nice. Saturation is essentially harmonic generation, dunno if Line 6 mentioned that. But harmonic generation is what mastering engi's use to make Bass sound present across multiple platforms. Saturation is how you get bass to sound like "bass" on a TV bar or a mobile phone. This new block is doing something similar, it's helping other frequencies be heard via Saturation. That's exactly why it sounds like it has more "Body" which is a descriptive you were probably reaching for.

I love this. I've been replacing some of my end of chain compression with this instead. With about 25% saturation, it does the same job but which much more "mojo"

Love this addition!! You nailed it with the comment about "bloom in the pick attack".... The Reel will also allow me to turn the sag down on most of my amps. I can keep the "trampoline" response, which to me behaves like a high quality front end section. The lower sag on the back end won't stiffen that bloom up in a negative way, but it provides a more taut "keraaang" on the big strings....... Bravo, Line 6!

Try this: studio pre->la comp->reel1->reel2->reel3->long nice dynamic hall. No cab! Use all the bass cuts to 120ish, hammer down on highs in the reel instances to 11k to 7k. Saturation around 5, very low flutter, adjust texture at 4ish first. Try 30 ips to 7,5. switch the reels on like amp channels. For me thats the best boutique amp in hx!

I'm not much of a slide player but I do it sometimes, and this reel thing works really well for it.
@AndrewStonerock3 жыл бұрын
I think I'm more apt to use it on bass guitar. To fatten and round out the bass. Modern metal bass is pretty shrill. As for guitar, I do tend to use eq as a telephone/lo-fi filter. So this is a really good replacement for that. You could also dime the level before an amp and really goose it. Might make a unique preamp/boost option.

It bothers me how long I’ve had this in my Stomp and I wasn’t using it. A friend asked me about making a Mac Demarco kinda thing, so I tried to make a kinda 1-to-1 version based on his live pedalboards, and then I made “my version” where I’d choose similar effects that just grabbed me a little better. Ended up throwing the Retro Reel in the mix and knew I had a hit. It replaced 3 blocks right away, and with parameter changes can replace another 2 or 3. I now have a very nice Mac Demarco /lofi kinda sound that changes to a crazy drippy surf sound, that changes to a ‘66 Beatles kinda sound.
is it more like a aiwa tp-1011 the Ritchie backmore boost ?
@nunocarmona3 жыл бұрын
To my ears, Texture changes the way the effect flutters. I only notice it if there's some Wow/Flutter. With it to 0 the Flutter has a regular predictable behaviour whereas with texture up, it becomes less predictable.
@loopie0073 жыл бұрын
As I read the Line 6 manual, the Texture is like changing out the quality of the tape you are using. A high-end tape has a fuller wider EQ whereas a lo quality tape would have a narrower EQ. Think Maxell vs Radio Shack tapes. It would be funny if they didn't have a slider, but some buttons with brand names and $$ next to them.
@thespotlights92783 жыл бұрын
If the Retro Reel is meant to emulate the sound of the recorded instrument (or vocal) into a vintage reel to reel.... then why have it first in the chain? Shouldnt that emulation come at the end of the chain?

I've always been a tube amp and a couple of pedals guy so I'm clueless when it comes to these things but the Helix is tempting...can you edit like this on the Helix or do you have to do it on the computer?
@guitarplayer19693 жыл бұрын
All of the settings are controllable on the unit directly. I mainly edit on the unit directly as its faster for me. You can even make these adjustment on the fly with your feet in a live situation (Footstomp edit mode), but I would only use that foot stomp editing in a live situation for minor adjustment, if needed (I have never had to do it, as I get everything set up before playing live).

Not to be an arrogant prick, but this effect is by far the more useless in Helix... from a metal player point of view... It`s not vibrato, it`s not overdrive, it´s not a booster... it`s just something tasteless in between. We need the Metal Zone, the feedbacker and the 5150 III... that`s all I ask for on the future updates. I forgot the Randall RG 100H or the Satan.

@donnyraines37813 жыл бұрын
Not to be an arrogant prick, but Revv purple for rhy.tones , boost for leads, or revv red. More thunk than any 5150. Play with IR's. The Helix caters to players from genres of music, not just metal. (In my opinion, caters to high gain users a little less than all others), and thats ok, I have my axefx3 for my metal band. Our other guitarist uses his helix, swaps between revv and engl models depending on mood. The engl model with right ir gets you in that NATAS/Satan territory. With some tinkering, it's attainable. Try a Eminence Texas heat ir or Krank cab ir.

Guess what? I find all that metal shit utterly useless. Have a nice day. :)
