I was skeptical about this due to the fact that I don't play djent or modenr metal that requires extended range instruments. I play old school 80's Hard Rock, Hair Metal... And let me tell you, this Horizon Gate CHANGED MY LIFE ! Whenever I go to a gig and the venue has bad elctricity that generates white electrical noise: I'm Setting it at the begining of the chain at 0.8 Sensitivity et voilà, it cuts the noise while no messing with your tone in any way. It doesn't screw with your sustaining notes, doesn't affect your tone, It's truly a gigging musician must have tool in the trade. Thank you very much for this tutorial dude !!!!

This is an issue that's plagued me for decades to some degree, and part of the reason why I just picked up a Helix. The first tone I worked on dialing in was hours of adding pre and post EQ, then deciding how much tone to sacrifice for good gating. I thought I was pretty happy with it until I watched your excellently brief and focused video. I didn't even know Horizon existed or a gate that would shelf the higher frequencies and residual crap noise of my guitar. I can't wait to start from scratch and try this gate out now. It might even make my '80s Charvel with Jackson actives useful again!

exactly the noise problem i was having with the helix.. the horizon gate fixed it! before it was included, i actually added a real precision drive to my rig to fix it and now its included and i can just use the helix..great model!

Thanks man, this helped a lot. It didn't remove the root noise but it is definitely the best way to loose the pulsating noise I have on all presets! Now the presets are so quiet I think of adding some noise (amp hiss) to know that the unit is on ;-) !! For the cleaner and classic sounds you need to use it carefully, 'cause it shuts of your signal rather drastically.

Sorta, it’s based on the gate part of the Precision Drive by Horizon Devices. So yes, but not on its own, it’s attached to a (quite good) overdrive.
@julienperrocheau22473 жыл бұрын
Hello thebishopgame!!! Thanks for this very useful explanation on getting a better metal tone! I just have 2 questions! i hope you could help me! 😅... - Do you dial your input gate on "off" when using the horizon gate? - Can I use the precision drive to boost my rhythm metal sound (as a tube screamer...level 10, drive 0) with the horizon gate without altering the sound? Cause there's still a gate in it even with level at 0 i think... Thanks a lot for what you share to people!!! 🤘🤘🤘
@thebishopgame3 жыл бұрын
Yep, you can use both. When I do, the input gate is the main gate and the Horizon is just to control any extra little stuff that gets through. And yeah, the gate is still active at 0 but it should be pretty transparent that low. If it's still causing you issues, either turn off the guitar pad (if you're using it), or put a gain block in front and boost your signal a little.
@julienperrocheau22473 жыл бұрын
Thanks for these fast explanation! So you can you: Input gate + precision drive (gain at 0 acts as the boost rhythm stuff) + Precision gate (get rid of the hum that can't achieve the Input Gate. 3 noise gate without altering tone? 🤔
@thebishopgame3 жыл бұрын
@@julienperrocheau2247 Oh, the Horizon Gate is just the Gate part of the Horizon Drive broken out into its own model - if you've got the Horizon Drive in there, just use the Gate there and don't bother with a separate Horizon Gate.

How well does this work for a lower gain application?
@thebishopgame3 жыл бұрын
Works great, though lower gain generally also means less noise. You'd probably use looser settings. The full range is useful - even 0 does something, on input that's loud enough, so don't be afraid of "extreme" settings on that end.

Hey mr Bishop! Can you tell me why the input gate on my stomp stops working when i engage the fx loop?
@thebishopgame3 жыл бұрын
Please, Mr. Bishop was my father's name. Call me "the" (/s). Regarding the gate, I'm not sure - it definitely shouldn't. Any chance you accidentally assigned the gate activation to the same switch as that FX Loop? Assuming that whatever is coming back in that loop's return is initially being sent your post-gate signal, the gate shouldn't be affected by any other block being enabled or disabled.
@gravyblue3 жыл бұрын
@@thebishopgameSorry, Mr. The, Deffo no accidental switching. If I plug a cable across the loop, as soon as I activate the loop, lots of hiss as if the gate is off.Interestingly, if I slide the mix to 50% , I can hear the hiss phasing, so it's pre loop, and not the loop it self.
@gravyblue3 жыл бұрын
OK. I've just done a test. Blank preset. 1 dirty amp and input gate. Gate off small hiss, gate on silent. Insert fx loop before amp with a cable bridging. Loop off silent, loop on loads of hiss.
@gravyblue3 жыл бұрын
@@thebishopgame Sorry, Mr The. I've just started a blank preset, 1 amp and an input gate. all works perfectly. place a loop before the amp and the hiss is dreadful when the loop is activated. The loop is set to instrument level.
@thebishopgame3 жыл бұрын
@@gravyblue That really makes me think the cable and/or the loop itself is getting some noise. I have a really hard time believing that it's something with the gate itself. You could also try it with a Gate block and see if the behavior is the same. After that, I would hit up CS for more help troubleshooting.

I recently created a "lively" sounding Preset, and it has 3 Snapshots. One Snapshot was quiet, but 2 had a fair amount of noise. I turned on the "Input" Noise Gate, and adjusted the controls basically as recommended by Jason Sadites, and I noticed something unexpected and problematic. Even when playing "much louder" than when I would expect the Noise Gate to engage, it was filtering a surprising amount of the highs in my sound and sucking the life out of it. I rechecked my Noise Gate settings and found that I could not preserve my sound and still use the Noise Gate. After discovering that problem, I came across this/your video on the Horizon Gate. Is the default "Input" Noise Gate similar to the Horizon Gate, in that it behaves as a "Dynamic High Shelf EQ Filter?" Does the HX Stomp have a Noise Gate that does NOT do any EQ Filtering before the "Noise Threshold" is reached?" I don't want my sound colored/filtered in any way before the Noise Gate clamps down. Thanks
@thebishopgame3 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. The reason I made this video is that none of the other gates work this way, they all just open or close, and are completely transparent when open. If you find the input gate coloring your sound, then it’s set wrong and is closing when you want it fully open.
@picksalot13 жыл бұрын
@@thebishopgame I followed the instructions from Jason Sadites here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJPCnqp3q6plm9k and could still hear a difference in tone when the gate was on, but should have been transparent. I am listening through Audio Technica Studio Monitoring Headphones. Can you recommend a procedure I can follow or method use so I can get the Noise Gate set right? I'd really like to use it, but I can't seem to get it to be "transparent." The tone problem I'm having occurs even if the Threshold is turned all the way down (minus 96 dB), and the Decay is turned all the way up (1 second). I would appreciate any advice or procedures you can recommend. Thanks
@thebishopgame3 жыл бұрын
@@picksalot1 What you're describing should be impossible. The input gate is identical to the Noise Gate model in the Dynamics section and I can assure you that there's nothing in it that modifies the tone, just level. If you're hearing something at -96 threshold, I don't know what to tell you, but your problem isn't the noise gate or its settings.
@picksalot13 жыл бұрын
@@thebishopgame I thought it should be impossible too, and that's why I'm confused about what/why it is going on. If I figure out what is going on, I'll be sure to post an update. If other people have run into the same problem, I hope they will post a comment. Thanks for your help.

Do you always put the gate as first in the chain?
@thebishopgame4 жыл бұрын
Generally, yeah. I want it reacting to my guitar’s actual dynamics as much as possible, putting after compression or distortion gives it less dynamic range to work with so it won’t react as much. In some cases, that’s desirable, but I’ve found it’s generally better first.

Do you think it sucked in the examples I gave? It’s still active at 0.0 on the Drive, btw, you can’t fully turn it off. But those low settings can still be really useful for stuff like leads. It definitely likes a heavy right hand so it might not be great for like, dynamic blues playing.
