Oooh, Homozygous talk. I love it. One of my favorite books is called Breeding Better Pigeons goes in depth on the subject. Like Adrian says, "you have to start with performance" otherwise you could be breeding a bunch of show birds with minimal homing ability & negative qualities that will manifest themselves even further the more inbred the population.

absolutely, both examples I show are proof of that. idc if its a direct son of 1st place Victoria falls, its still gotta be tested imo im not a fan of one off genetic freaks personally, I like to see a consistently winning bloodline so I know the results are reproducible . hbu? ill definitely check that book out rn

@@breedersjourney I prefer pigeons that consistently produce top 10-20% birds. I try to breed from those. They get about 10 babies to test from and then either switch mates or move on down the road.

You should have started the video with the performance graph then the breeding program. Most dummies will buy birds bred for stock off birds bred for stock and line/inbreed to a relative and think they're doing something, lol. Personally i wouldn't bother with any form of breeding till i have an established family of winners. otherwise how could you know if the correct traits are being passed to the offspring.

your probably right but I don't think ive ever been asked about selection for performance, ive got the line breeding question a million times tho lmao so I gave it precedence. Exactly, it still shocks me how many people still get caught up in that paper breeding.
