Go back to the basics with us as we explore one of the most fundamental tools in SketchUp - the line tool. Watch to learn what it is, where to find it, how to use your mouse and keyboard to create lines, connect lines and set desired dimensions.

Thanks Aaron. No surprises there but these Square One videos are nice. Never know when a quick comment or illustration will fill in a small gap on a fundamental. And hugely valuable to a new modeler. Thanks!

Hi, I am a almost 80 year old man learning for my 'Men Shed'. Awesome series of lessons, never mind the negativity, those should just go elsewhere if they not happy. I am 100 percent happy with Square One.

Thank you for the entire line of Square One tutorials. They are PERFECT for the beginner, which I am perpetually. I use Sketchup about once a year and need to start from the beginning every time. But these tutorials are TOO HARD TO FIND. So this time I made a note of the Square One line. But for other (true) first time beginners they will only find you by accident. Please do something to help true first time beginners find this series.

Is there a way to “bend” a line after it’s been created? Also; coming from Adobe Illustrator, is the a shortcut key to use with the freehand tool that locks the freehand pen to a straight line? Thanks for the great simple explanations, particularly on the curve tool!

Once you establish the first point of a line and are moving the cursor around stretching the line out to the second point, is it possible to also view the angle in relation to an axis in addition to the length? Or how do I draw a line at a specific angle in the same manner as entering the length of a line. Then once you've drawn the first line the angle reference should be to the previously drawn line. An example might be if you wanted to draw the perimeter of a building lot. They are not always a true rectangle. So being able to enter a bearing and distance to draw each line would be helpful. I know there is an extension for drawing lot lines, but the ability to do this without using that extension or for objects other than lot lines is what I am asking about.

Question: How does Sketchup know what plane to draw the line on? It seems like it's usually what I want, but often not. For this reason I only draw a line if (1) I can use obvious inferencing, or (2) I'm drawing on the face of an existing object. Do you have recommendations about this?
@SketchUp
@SketchUp 3 жыл бұрын
If you want to draw in plane, have a face to draw on and watch your cursor. You will have a blue diamond under your cursor and the tool tip On Plane when you are drawing on a plane.

Thanks for the video, basics are so important, if you know how they work then you don't have a foundation to build on, no foundation equals poor results plus you can't understand why, that's where many give up.

These Videos are great. Just some feedback, as a beginner the next video does not auto load, so I don't know where the next one is? - Can I suggest adding a number to the Video Title - i.e. 1 - Line Tool, 2 - Align so that we can find the next video in the relevant series easily?

That's Entity Info, and your instincts are right, it's helpful to have it open when you're modeling! On Windows, you open it by clicking the right-pointing arrow next to Entity Info in the Default Tray or, if the tray is hidden, selecting Window > Default Tray > Entity Info. On Mac, select Window > Entity Info. This video goes into more detail on the panel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXu8XoqknNeVZq8si=6ZJGC-mLXQyfnBpK

I have a question, 'Entity Info.' does not show up for me, the top right corner of my screen shows nothing, no drop down, etc. When I search for 'Entity Info.' in the help search bar it shows no results. Where can I find 'Entity Info'? Thank you!

great info. and this is meant as genuine feedback. but this could have been 2 minutes. just imagine if each tool takes 7 minutes (x20 tools) that's 1h 20m. at 2 minutes we'd know the basics in 40 minutes. Hopefully this is taken and constructive feed back.
@SketchUp
@SketchUp 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! The idea of the Square One series is to go just beyond the basics and show every detail we can manage. Most people can figure out drawing a line in two minutes, but we try to go beyond and talk about modifier keys, inferencing, and alternate modes. also, not to spoil it for you, but there are over 70 Square one videos at this point!!
