+ThisIs MyName web.utk.edu/~mtaylo29/pages/Wood%20welding.htm apparently wood was being used around plastic being friction welded and someone forgot to insert the plastic on one run and discovered it worked anyway.

Tyres looks like it would burn smoke like a burnout on wheels
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 9 жыл бұрын
Clearly this is not going to be a strong bond, but not all wood needs strong bonds, and this could possible help better fuse scrap wood for usage. You could for example, weld two pieces of playwood together. Or you could make a really dense wood sandwich beams for heavier construction, layer after layer, then wrap it all in a steel band. I would say air suction plays a role too. As a former smoker, you could for example, lose the cherry on your cigarettes and press against it and it would 'weld', and tobacco itself is made up of entirely separate bits. So my guess is a combination of the burned bits fusing and the air being consumed creates a sort of vacuum suction between the two pieces in the microscopic crevices/grooves of the woods surface....and as long as the outer borders don't break, that vacuum force is maintained. I would say it's that force more than any, that keeps the wood pieces together.

I'm still skeptical. The 'welded' wood needs to undergo stress test or something, to make sure they are really 'one piece' after the welding process. It could be nothing more then charred wooden material holding them together (think super glue). Maybe dissect it and check up the joined area?

@keithcancel
@keithcancel 9 жыл бұрын
I would like to see sheer tests and other strength tests of the joint. Excluding the strength/weakness of the welded wood. My only thought is the high pressure between the wood pieces is a low oxygen environment. When the wood heats up due to friction as there is not as much oxygen it does not let the wood burn. So the carbon and other materials more so just melt. Curious what a cross section looks like under a microscope.

They are using the term welding incorrectly. Only metals are welded. When you melt something like plastic to plastic it is bonded together, not welded since plastic is not a metal. If you combine two pieces of wood together through heat and friction you are bonding two pieces of wood together just like you can bond to pieces of bread to each other but wood is not a metal and does not have a crystal structure likewise with plastic.
@imrosemahmood8512
@imrosemahmood8512 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's wrong to call it welding. It boils down to causing atomic continuity between two parts from heat and/or pressure, fusing it. The wood has its lignin glue chains mixed together, and I assume the cellulose/cells would mash around too, giving said continuity. Similar to how the grain structure of 2 metal parts becomes continuous in a weld whatever structure is in other materials could too and be a form of welding.
