Grandpa always used to say high percentage males are related to a dry year, not sure if that meant dry year coming up, or because of a dry year at ovulation... worth testing out if you track weather days in your daily log 😊

Great video! Very interesting to see the statistics at play, though I notice it's only for the ewe/doe. I've always assumed the male had more to do with "choosing" the sex, since he is providing either an X or Y. I do not know about sheep/goats specifically, but I know that in reptiles the sex is strongly influenced by ambient temperature at the time of egg incubation. Of course in mammals, the body helps regulate sperm temperature, but I wonder if very hot or very cold outside temperatures might still have some influence on those shorter lived Y sperm? Just a thought. This video certainly gave me a lot to think about!

Hello, April! I 100% think the ram/buck plays an important role in this. There isn’t a lot of evidence out there to support it but I have had males who lean heavily towards certain genders. What is interesting this year is the shear volume of people who have a lot of males. As you stated, weather can and certainly does play a role in sperm production.

Well, this breeding year we fed everyone as we usually do, got the dreaded barber pole worm under control, and did not flush anyone. What did we get? Several sets of triplets, most of which were rams! And these ewes range in age from 2-8+ years old. And the does seem to be following suit- a set of bucks born so far.

I’ve heard that the moon too has some influence on the sex of the offspring, that’s for mammals in general, since the moon control fluids on earth, oceans, body fluids, soil moisture etc. so I guess when the moon is pulling fluids out of the tissues the fluids in the body would be more and lighter so the Y sperm has more chance to win the race, on the other hand when the fluids are less and therefore thicker then the X sperm would win the race.. Oh and I’m totally with you Tim that the Ram plays a role in it too

Soybeans, soybean oil, flax, and flax oil. A little goes a long way. We would just use it to top dress their existing feed.

Great video. I guess I had a unicorn of a lambing season so far. 1 set of triplet males, 1 sets of male twins, 2 male/ female twins and only 1 set of female twins.

Agreed. You are running at 57.1% male ratio right now so that alone is a little deviated from the “norm”. The triplet males… that’s impressive. We’ve only had that happen once with a St Croix in 2014. Very cool. One thing I didn’t include in the video (because there are no studies to support me) is the ram or buck. I personally feel like the ram or buck may have a strong influence on the sex of the offspring. We have had males that generally just seem to produce females. This could also be due to lower sperm count or less healthy sperm.

I have another cohort of ewes due in may. I’ll have to see how it averages out. We had a high percentage of rams last year, luckily my ram from last year and this year is in the freezer now. I’ll have to select a ram for this year who’s mom had twin females and was a ewe/ ram twin.

Speaking of genetics do you have any books you would recommend on sheep breeding/ genetics. And have you seen seen a propensity to staph infections as an inheritable trait? I have a mother and daughter who have both gotten mastitis.

@@maynardosullivan we have seen maternal lines need more attention when drying out. You can also find a vaccine for mastitis manufactured by VIMCO which is approved for goats and used off label for sheep. If we have a propensity for mastitis, we will usually wean the babies later, withhold nutrition (we will literally feed them straw for a few days), and treat mom with penicillin and dexamethasone regardless of signs or symptoms. I don’t know if any genetic books per se on sheep or goats. Most topics can be found in various research articles but unfortunately, there just isn’t much money spent on sheep and goat research or advancement.

Lol my goat's go against your stat's. I had a goat that constantly gave me male's whether twins or singles or the occasional triplets. A yr before she died, she finally gave me twin girl's, another Doe also generally gave me buck's, 2 yrs ago she gave me a single Doe (always did twin boy's), last yr she gave me triplet Doeling's, first time & she's older. This was really interesting to listen to. I was also told if I wanted more females then I should douche the female with ACV to make her uterus more acidic. So making her body more acidic is suppose to increase the chances of female's. Since I wasn't that worried, I just got a new Buck instead, it worked 😁

You never cease to amaze us Tim! Great info. Thanks for all your hard work. We’re following your protocol for deworming. Still struggling a bit with tape in our 7 month old Dorper ram and ewe, even on pasture rotation. Could it be that the worms are immune to the drugs or perhaps we need to apply the meds more frequent. Copper sulphate seems to be working though. Do you use anything specific to deworm your cats and chickens?

Hello, Heidi. We have seen many people struggle with tape worms in the past few years. Unfortunately, it seems the dosages may not be high enough to get them cleared out in some cases. This is a tough call for us because we don’t want to advise people to give doses outside advised rates. With that being said….. we have seen people giving a high dose of safeguard at 10ml per animal and getting results finally getting rid of tape worms that had previously been resistant. We add copper sulfate to our chicken water but that falls into the area of “things Tim does and doesn’t make videos about”. We deworm our cats with an over the counter liquid wormer we buy online. Nice to hear from you again!

Well. We sure have had the complete opposite results here this year! We have mini nubian and Nigerian dwarf goats. 4 of our 7 does are first fresheners, and 3 are second fresheners. We have 2 of the 7 left to kid. We’ve had 2 sets of twin boys, one set of twin girls, one set of triplet boys, and one set of quads with 2 boys and 2 girls. 6 of the 7 does have gone a WEEK past their due dates! What the crap.😂

It happens. We are heavy females this year (compared to normal). We provided a lot of extra vitamin E and nutrition at breeding time as well. Despite what the studies say, sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to the way these things turn out.

Brewers spent grain is a descent form of nutrition for sheep and goats. Most producers who use it advise limiting feed and feeding in the evenings so the animals have time to digest and will be willing to graze during the day. Some farms have had issues with vitamin b deficiency because the animals get full on the grains and neglect eating their hay. You will want to ensure your livestock are up to date in clostridium vaccines before starting as well to protect against any overeating.

It would appear as such. This has been a really really strange year. In almost 30 years we have not seen this many males and it’s happening on a lot of farms. We assume it has something to do with weather and ovulation. Lots of babies later than usual and lots and lots of boys.

Hello! Thanks for watching our videos. Assuming the egg is ready and waiting, the fastest sperm can reach the egg in less than 45 minutes. Some of the slowest sperm can take days. Sperm can survive 2-5 days depending on very specific conditions. In some cases, the ewe or doe may not have ovulated yet and the sperm may have to “hang out” and wait for it to arrive. In the case of twins or triplets, there are multiple eggs involved. Hopefully this helps answer your question. 😬
