Love this! And you know what? People are the same way! Too much intervention goes on in a hospital setting. I remember my first baby was snatched up as soon as she was born, whisked away to the nursery, and breastfeeding was difficult when she was brought back. Had my others at home in bed, and they nursed within minutes of being born!

When we started out I was a little too keen to help. One of our does who was a bit feral held off having her kids for six hours until I finally got the message that she did not need me. I left for the house frozen and dejected while she got on with having her twins. when I returned to the barn there were two kids perfectly cleaned off and nursing. She was an incredible doe..the foundation of half our herd.

This is normal, and raising livestock is a learning process. It is natural to want to help and sometimes hard to resist. We hope things go well for you this year! Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave us a message. We look forward to hearing from you again in the future.

Yes. Believe it or not she was just shorn in October. We have a few wool breeds that are out of hand with wool growth. We have some Blacknose Valais that are really rediculous. We are hoping to do a video soon showing how we crutch out our moms in this condition.

My first year having lambs, my philosophy was that they have a better idea of what they're doing than I do. I was present when lambs were born but I did not step in unless I absolutely had to. The only thing I had to do was move the lambs a couple times so they wouldn't get stepped on while momma was birthing subsequent lambs. I'm hoping this year will be the same and no one will have any problems and I won't need to interfere much or at all but we have a bunch of first time moms expecting so could be interesting! But those moms need the experience too so I'll let them do their best before I step in.

That sounds like a good plan. There are instances where we need to step in and I think most of the time, it's pretty obvious when that is. As you stated, you can't let them get stepped on, etc. We hope you have another good year as well. Thank you for taking the time to leave a message and thank you for watching our content. It is appreciated!

Question, aside from anemia, what can cause ewes to abandon lambs or have still-born lambs in noticeable amounts? We had a really bad run with barber pole worm this year and despite consistent treatments the ewes were still suffering. I mainly use Cydectin in warm months and switch to Safe Guard feed pellets int he cold months, occasionally using a 3rd type for variety. Some of the first ewes to deliver were having a lot of problems with weak lambs, abandoned lambs, still borns, etc. After the 3rd deworming treatment this winter it seems to be getting much better but I still have the occasional small, weak, abandoned lamb. I keep a mineral supplement out and the ewes are well fed so anemia is the only guess I have. Thoughts?

Until you figure out what is going on it would not hurt to put seaweed meal out for them free choice (kelp) It is an excellent source of iodine among other trace minerals. Our goats really seem to go for it in the colder months.

This is a complex question. We have seen diminishing effectiveness with safeguard over the past 5 years with many farms reporting no response or very poor response. There are a LOT of late season abortion issues possible. In the United States, several diseases can lead to late gestation abortions in sheep and goats. The most common ones include: Chlamydiosis (Enzootic Abortion of Ewes, EAE): Caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci, this is a major cause of late-term abortions in sheep and goats. Infected animals typically abort in the last few weeks of pregnancy. Toxoplasmosis: Caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. This disease can be contracted by ingesting food or water contaminated with oocysts shed in the feces of infected cats. It often results in abortions in the last trimester of pregnancy. Campylobacteriosis (Vibriosis): This bacterial infection, primarily caused by Campylobacter fetus and Campylobacter jejuni, can lead to sporadic or epidemic abortions, usually in the last trimester. Q Fever: Caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii, Q fever can result in late-term abortions, stillbirths, and weak offspring. Border Disease (Hairy Shaker Disease): This is a viral disease caused by a pestivirus. It can cause abortions, stillbirths, and birth of weak lambs with a hairy coat. Brucellosis: Caused by Brucella ovis in sheep and Brucella melitensis in goats, it's less common in the US due to successful eradication programs, but it can still cause late-term abortions. Listeriosis: Caused by Listeria monocytogenes, this bacterium can lead to abortion, stillbirth, or the birth of weak offspring. Schmallenberg Virus: A relatively new disease in Europe that has not been widely reported in the US, but it can cause late-term abortions and birth defects

I have a goat that its birth canal is very small I had a hard time pulling the babies out Unfortunately they do not make it cuz they were in there for too long and I had to forcefully pull them out I'll tell you what I had one heck of a time trying to flip the baby around pull him out backwards I almost thought he wasn't going to come out even backwards I think me and the mama got more best friends now she was a little on the wild side when I got her it was crazy last year she didn't have a problem whatsoever she tightened up a lot trying to carry those two babies

If she had kidded before with no issues, she probably went into labor a little early. If you have a veterinarian you work with, you may want to talk to her/him about having some epinephrine on hand or other drugs that will allow the mother to dilate. Usually a IM injection of epinephrine will cause them to dilate in rather short order.

@@LinessaFarms no way I thought that was only possible for humans well it looks like I'm going to have to do some investigating at my local veterinarian thank you very much you saved my goats once again goat power forever

@@florin26balalau 10ml of dexamethasone will usually help the problem if they are in labor and not dilating. The dexamethasone takes longer to work. Your vet will probably be more apt to write you a script for that than epi. You'll just have to check with them and see what they tell you.
