Little did Yoritomo know that by wiping out the last few strong names in the Minamoto Clan, he was dooming the future of his clan. Nobody was around to fend for his son and grandson who was both removed and assassinated.

It has nothing to do with wokeness, all the kings / rulers wanted stability and safety for their own. In Japan it was pretty normal for warlords or clan leaders to fight for both sides. Like from clan X some would be fighting for side A and some for Side B. This ensured after a lot of sepukku or head removal clan still had members left. What Yoritomo thought he was doing for his survival only doomed his family in a really short time. That was K K's point. Which is perfectly reasonable. The only thing I would say in Yoritomo's defense is that he could not have seen what future holds.

i watched a Japanese touristy DYK-type things as a child, and there was an episode where they talked about a city in the North of Japan that was once beautiful but now in ruined irrelevance. I assumed then it was destroyed during the Sengoku Jidai. Only literally now did I connect the dots that that lost beautiful city was Hiraizumi. As a nostalgia junkie, I really like Atlantis-type stuff: beautiful cities lost to the horrors of absurd cosmic indifference, like Hiraizumi.

Yep, its a tiny town of 7000 people nowadays...its quite interesting, although Yoritomo apparently razed it, he also was impressed with its splendor and had several structures (such as temples) in Kamakura erected modelled after buildings he saw in Hiraizumi.

Yoritomo was a huge douche, killing his own brothers, particularly since Yoshitsune was the one who enabled his rise to power. Seriously, Noriyori would have never been in a position to cross over to Kyushu if it wasn't for Yoshitsune's campaign. Yoshitsune never betrayed his brother. Yoritomo is merely the most egregious example though. The famed samurai honor seemed to be an exception, almost as if these guys were doing things characteristic of humans.

The bushido stuff is mostly a romantic idea of "the good old days" pushed during the relatively peaceful Tokugawa shogunate. Brothers killing each other to control the clan was a classic. Takeda Shingen overthrew and "exiled" his own father. Uesugi Kenshin was originally from the Nagao clan, an Uesugi vassal , but forced his overlord to adopt him and took over. The list goes on and on...

Thanks for making this series! Saw the 2021 anime series _The Heike Story_ and found your Genpei War playlist. It helped immensely in understanding and better appreciating the historical events of the anime. Shame though the series was not 24+ episodes to give the scope of the conflict justice; not to mention to help really give depth to the story's historical personalities.

It is the stupid Fujiwara son who sell out Yoshitsune. His father and brother on the other hands, love Yoshitsune like their own family. Yoritomo is really crazy.

His personality is often described as a "ruthless politician." Because he drove many of his Clan and brothers to death.and He was less likely to lead the soldiers himself. Yoritomo himself is said to have excelled at martial arts, but as a combat commander, he has not shown a special track record. However, the military system which entrusts each site to the deputy commander and the military supervisor is a pioneer in the history of the world. He was mainly in political negotiations, and he established the Kamakura Shogunate.. In other words, Yoritomo is a symbol of the rising East Country samurai forces. Yoritomo is a symbol of the Eastern Samurai Army, and all his achievements are attributed to his personal abilities, but it is not overrated there is. Because his political power and ability to control human resources are highly regarded, and he is a genius of organization-building in Japanese history, and his skill is more skillful than Ieyasu Tokugawa, who modeled him on to future generations. The picture, which is believed to be Yoritomo Minamoto, was Naotugu of Takauji Ashikaga's yang brother, who created the Muromachi Shogunate.
