I always wondered how was it that the UK version of Lingo only made it past one series, considering it was a massively succesful format elsewhere. Apparently it's because ITV made a general clearance in the schedules for the half-hour episodes of the Bill.

Likewise, $1,000,000 chance of a lifetime (US) became All Clued Up (UK), and Catchphrase (US) only lived in the US for 13 weeks and then became a smash hit in the UK.

According to Wikipedia it's had lots of international versions. This one only lasted a year in the UK, but it was revived a year ago as a new show.

The new version loses the Bingo feature. That sucks.
@JamieMelling924 жыл бұрын
I wonder why they got rid of the bingo element in the current version? Was it due to Covid, as it might not be safe for different people to be handling the balls, and having to sanitise them after every episode would be a ballache (if you'd pardon the pun)? Nevertheless I still like the new version
@magicalsenshi86853 жыл бұрын
I doubt it would be due to COVID, as the Dutch version kept the ball hopper (albeit with lettered balls (used since 2019) instead of numbered balls (the numbered balls were only in the final round)). The only change due to the pandemic in the Dutch version was the lack of an audience, who would normally be seen sitting behind the contestants.

@@magicalsenshi8685 Man, i hope that the COVID-19 pandemic should FINALLY be over soon, so we can get the audience back in the show.
@magicalsenshi86853 жыл бұрын
@@vikramleon Speaking of audiences in Lingo (I know you were referring to the Dutch revival), the UK revival will still lack an audience even after the pandemic restrictions are lifted (most UK daytime gameshows, especially those on ITV, lacked audiences for a long time, and more often than not would have a clapping machine instead).
@gordonbeattie48643 жыл бұрын
Probably because most ITV viewers are too thick not to be confused by Bingo and Words... I'm highly disappointed the new UK version doesn't stick with the usual worldwide format.

Why did it bring it back as it flopped in the 1980s?
@magicalsenshi86853 жыл бұрын
@@ninfilms From what I read in comments from the upload of the final episode, it seems that it was cancelled due to Lingo's timeslot being occupied by The Bill, which started to air year-round from Summer 1988, and they couldn't get another timeslot for Lingo.
@ninfilms3 жыл бұрын
@@magicalsenshi8685 Ok it was clashed with The Bill but if the show was good then Thames could of rearranged it on another timeslot. Also did the audience ask why this show didn't have another chance. It happened to Minder which it was a slow burner with the first series the producers of Thames believe in Minder and they decided to produced another series which became a success. As for Lingo I remember it on Thursdays in 1988 and I felt it was unmemorable. Again out of all the ITV gameshows to bring back I would thought of Lingo.
@magicalsenshi86853 жыл бұрын
@@ninfilms ITV only brought it back due to the success of the reboot of the Dutch version in 2019, which is still airing to this day, according to the ITV Press Centre (their original version aired from 1989 to 2014, being axed due to low ratings). However, the bingo aspect was removed in the UK revival, but the Dutch revival kept it, albeit with lettered balls for the main game and numbered balls for the final round, even during the pandemic, so COVID doesn't seem to be the reason why the UK revival abandoned it. Also, the UK revival is an hour long, while the Dutch revival is only 30 minutes long.
