I read this story six months when I first started studying French and could understand maybe 20%. Six months later I'm able to understand 80%. Keep at it, language isn't easy but definitely worth it.

subtitles after the original, a part 2 for those who want to see the translation might be a good idea for a program. In our library we have children's picture books in many languages. the right side has the ENGLISH WORDS/THE LEFT HAS THE FRENCH --OR SPANISH-- OR KOREAN... AS THE PICTURE IS THE SAME, IT IS VERY HELPFUL WHEN RAISING KIDS AND ONE PARENT IS FLUENT ENGLISH AND THE OTHER FLUENT FRENCH. THE CHILD WILL LEARN BOTH. MAYBE THE FRENCH ALLIANCE CAN GIVE YOU SOME PUBLISHERS WHO PRODUCE DUO LANGUAGE TEXTS. OR GO AND ASK A LIBRARIAN OR UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE DEPT. ALL THE BEST. GOOD LUCK!

How to make the most of this text: *Side note* A) this is intermediate so if you can't understand the majority of it, try to find children's songs or stories with pictures to start building your vocab. Actual instructions: 1) Listen once while reading the text. 2) Listen again without reading the text to see what you can catch. 3) Read the text and pause after each line, repeating after the speaker. Voilà !

Any foreign language will seem to "slow down" as you practice more. YOU will be able to process it faster with practice (I used that word again...) Some cultures and languages may be faster than others. In the case of French, I do not think it is as bad. It depends on the speaker, the region, the context... Take advantage of the adjustable playback speed in settings. A blessing to language learners on KZbin!
@lisalu910

They don't. It always "sounds" faster when you are listening to a language you don't know. If she read any slower it would be like reading to a two-year-old child.

What culture is french? European? African? South Asian? Language has very little with culture. Learning languages is growing again like a child again. Your comments made me think of invaders who civilized their colonies with an specific language: Spanish in the Americas, Latin in Europe, English in the indian reservations. I wont get better at french by reading a french biography of Napoleon and I won´t learn better the history of Napoleon if I learn french. You suck.

@@MrSantafe100 You don't understand what you are talking about. Cultures are more than that. languages are related to all aspects of life including the environment. That is why in any given language there are tons of proverbs, sayings, idioms that related to sports, food, body parts, animals, plant, and so on. Ex: Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Now in Portuguese: A cavalo dado não se olha os dente; in Spanish: A Caballo regalado no se le miran los dientes. By the way, Do you have a green finger or a sweet tooth? Does your watch cost an arm and a leg? In Portuguese when something is really expensive we say it costs " the eyes of the face". So don't get mistaken, language is culture. that is why it is really difficult to get the nuances of the language. That is why we don't understand a joke in foreign languages even though we are get used to it. Languages have hidden meanings, abstract meanings that only native knows and that has to do with culture. If you know English better than I do you will be able to spot some mistake I am sure I have made in this comment.

Otherwise you should be able to guess the meaning of new vocabulary. I can understand it, English is my native language, and I've not really seen any English translations of French.

I HAVE TO SAY I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS SITE. IT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING TO FIND---THE LANGUAGE I CAN LISTEN TO WHILE I CLEAN HOUSE OR COMMUTE. DO I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING? OF COURSE NOT! MY PURPOSE IS JUST TO HEAR THE WORDS AROUND ME, THE WAY I WOULD IF I WERE ON VACATION IN FRANCE W/O ANY MIDDLIN' BIT OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANGUAGE. THE READER IS GREAT. NOW TO COMMENT ON THE POINT BELOW THAT WANTED TO KNOW WHY THE FRENCH SPEAK SO FAST. THIAT PERSON (NOTE SIG) WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT RAISED IN WYOMING USA AND THEN SUDDENLY FOUND THE NEW TEACHER WAS FROM NYC! THE BIG APPLE---WE USED TO GET XTRA CREDIT POINTS WHENEVER SHE (THE TEACHER FROM NYC) WAS SPEEDING FASTER THAN A PICKUP TO A HAY FIRE! SHE WOULD JOKE AND ASK IF WE WOULD LIKE TO SWITCH CLASS & GO WITH THE TEACHER FROM BOSTON WHO WAS NOT AS FAST, SPEAKING...BUT GO LISTEN TO JFK SPEAKING. "CAR..IS .KKKAAAARRR ---!!!!! A BOSTON ACCENT!!THAT IS WHY LANGUAGE IS SO FUN. READ PYGMALLION. SEE MY FAIR LADY....LEARN SOMETHING NEW AND DIFFERENT AND WONDERFUL. YOU WON'T REGRET IT, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT BECOME A PERFECTLY FLUENT SPEAKER. BESIDES, AFTER ENGLISH I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT FRENCH IS THE MOST COMMON LANGUAGE SPOKEN. AND THE FOOD IS sigh! so wonderful! See the movie JULIE & JULIA! It says it all! Language, culture, food.....

Thanks so much! Can anybody help me, how can I making French reading my organization’s name for ‘oi’ not as ‘oa’. Like ‘toilet’ not as ‘toalet’? Do I need ‘oii’ , or ‘oÿ’, I don’t know exactly. Thanks

If you stop and think about it, when you watch movies or drama on TV in English, there is probably a proportion of the dialogue you don’t hear or understand. It’s because people speak imperfectly or looking in the other direction. So it’s the same when you are listening to French. Only more so.

Listening, speaking, and writing skills can differ SO much when learning a language! So that's totally normal. Keep it up!!

I learn by watching the video. I read the words visually on the page, listen to the narrator, then read the words myself out loud, stopping and re-listening to get the pronunciation right. I would pay for more videos like this. Straight audio or Kindle is not helpful.
