Someone just bought me a book of short 'easy' stories for beginners in French and this one is the first story in it. My initial happiness was soon deflated. My hopes dashed. Most teachers don't understand the process of language acquisition. Beginners need to understand, not every word, but need to feel that they can understand most of the time what's going on, what's the story is about. If little children don't get the message, their parents will simply say it again in a simple manner. There's interaction so parents get feedback and clues about their children's level of comprehension. With that information they can try better to communicate and adjust the pace and the level of the language so their child gets to understand the meaning of the words and sentences. Parents naturally do what is necessary to facilitate comprehension. By reading comments here I have confirmation that this video is not well adjusted for beginners. Too difficult.

The story is for beginner readers. Big difference. A levels can't do stories yet. Just extremely simple short paragraphs throw them off. A0s know zero words. A1s know about 500. A2s know about 1,000. B1s know about 2,000 give or take. B2s know about 4,000. C1s know at least 8,000. C2s know around 16,000 or the equivalent of the same amount of words as a native college-educated speaker. These are very rough approximations. Now, let's count how many different words are in this story. I would say this story requires knowledge of a minimum of , say, 5, 000 words, closer to 10,000. So we can conclude this story is meant for already bilingual students who are in between B2 and C1, almost a B3, if there were such a category. Have fun learning French. :)

I'm learning French by several methods right now & this looked interesting. Having stories read to you as you read them is very good. It gives the rhythm & the correct pronunciation. This story is definitely not for beginners though. It does show that French people do speak quickly. I recommend people trying to learn French, listen to French music also. Old classics like, "Que reste-t’il de nos amours", or more modern ones like, "Ou va le Monde". You can slow them down.

I’m actually surprised that I understood like 80% of the story while she was narrating it and even tho she is in fact speaking really fast, I truly believe that we all (language learners) need to move on pretty quickly from the slow speaking videos cause there’s this risk of getting used to that and then being discouraged when noticing everybody else speaks extremely fast in comparison. The story is easy. It is not abstract. It is for beginner READERS of French, not for absolute A0 beginners nor for A1 or A2. The A levels are for aquiring basic vocabulary in order to move to intermediate B levels. These words are commonly used. Think of it as exercise to stretch towards B2 and C1. I am C1 and understand everything without looking at the pages. I recognize by ear every word and not one word's meaning is new to me. For B1s and B2s: without stretching and some difficulty there is no improvement. Just listen and read along. Think in terms of chunking a language and comprehensible input. Do you have a basic grasp of about 70% of the story? Then it's the right level for you. If you understood it right away then you , like me, need a more challenging goal. The goal here is more to match sounds to letters and improve pronunciation. Instead of looking up every single word allow the larger context of each paragraph to help you guess. This is the way you can start to think in French. Expect there to be lots of new words and parts of sentences. Repeat the same story every day for as long as possible until mastered. This may take 3-4 weeks. Or longer. Be patient with yourself. I recommend listening when deeply relaxed, fed and well rested and approaching it like a sport. Think of each story as a puzzle to be mastered. Enjoy spending time in French rather than "studying" it start living it. Bon courage!
