1. Hit the books:- study hard 2. Cut the corners - to do something in an easiest and cheap way 3. Drop in the ocean- doing really less than what was needed 4. Action speak louder than words- act instead of saying something 5. A good catch - dating someone really nice 6. Beat about the bush - not getting straight to the point 7. Couldn't care less - don't care about what's happening 8. Driving someone up the wall - Driving someone crazy 9. Go down in flames - end suddenly 10. Judge the book by its cover - judge a person by his clothing 11. Make a long story short - explaining things in few words 12. Miss the bullet - to miss the opportunity 13. Sit on the fence - staying neutral 14. When pigs fly - impossible thing, something that's not gonna happen.

Hit the books - Study hard. Cut corners - Doing something in a easy and cheapest way. A drop in the ocean - Action is tiny compared to what's happened. Action speak louder than words - Real attitude rather than what they says. To be a good catch - really excellent choice. Not getting Drive some up the wall - Annoying Go down in legs - to work down suddenly and completely Don't judge a book by its cover - One should not judge by their outer appearance . Make a long story short - Straight to the point. Miss the bullet - miss the great opportunity . Sit on the fence - being neutral . When pig flys - something never happened. Blue ribbon - rich great status. Call it a day - stop working on something. Cut somebody some slack - Don't be so critical. Kill two birds with one stone - doing one thing but you get two results of it back. Every cloud has silver lining - Always good stuffs after bad stuffs. Give someone cold shoulder - Ignore someone.

She could have used, “that ship has sailed”. Meaning...it’s too late, that opportunity has passed or that situation is long over. Nothing you can do about it now.

Hi Marina, I really enjoy your videos, they are very well organized, structured and very educational. There's one mistake in this one though, at 6:24 mins the idiom you're explaining is "Miss the boat" but the screen is displaying "miss the bullet". Thanks again for all these videos... 👏❤️

“Beat around the bush” comes from hunting small animals and birds that hide in bushes and the hunters, rather than go into the bushes to capture them, would beat on the outer edges of the bushes to chase the animals out. Takes a little longer.

When pigs fly = when roosters lay eggs (Iraqi idiom) We also use (Judge a book by its cover/A drop in the ocean / actions speak louder tha words) we use them for the same situation (Generally in Arabic) A good catch = a good catch 🤵 groom

Thanks for such an interesting lesson, Marina! There is a mistake with the text: "bullet" intead of "boat". There is another idiom "to dodge the bullet" which means to avoid sth unpleasant. :)

“Cutting corners” . A literal example would be someone who is walking and comes to a corner, rather than make the 90 degree turn at the corner, cuts across a lawn or open space to save time and distance. This would be where the term is derived from.

"Good catch" has an alternative meaning: it's also used when someone points out a mistake in something you said or did, and you sort of thank the person for it by saying "Good catch!" or "Nice catch!", which is ultimately the same thing. It looks like the Big Bang Theory example illustrates this meaning [though I'm not entirely sure, don't remember the situation the characters are in] rather than the one about an awesome boyfriend. (:

✓Hit the books - to study hard ✓Cut corners- to do something in the easiest or cheapest way ✓A drop in the ocean- a very small amount compared with what is needed ✓To be a good catch -good choice ✓Beat around the bush - slowing things down and not getting to the point ✓I couldn't care less- don't care about what's going on ✓Drive someone up the wall- to drive someone crazy ✓Go down in flames-to end suddenly and completely ✓Make a long story short-explaining something in a few words without going into detail ✓Miss the boat- miss an opportunity ✓Sit on the fence- when a person doesn't take sides in an argument or is hesistant to choose between two sides in a dispute ( in order to remain neutral) ✓When pigs fly - something that never happened , impossible thing
