Conflict plays a role in many social sciences. Linguistically, conflict between different ethnic groups often results from language contact. Problems viewed as political, economic or sociological in nature are often actually rooted in linguistic conflict. In the literature, however, contact has overshadowed conflict. In addition, the emphasis in contact research has traditionally focused on closed, homogeneous groups rather than on urban industrial societies in which social and linguistic conflict are important factors.
Language contact and conflict are seen as interdependently related elements applicable both to individuals and to language communities, yet these phenomena occur only between speakers of languages, not between languages per se.
Examples
Ethno-linguistic conflict in Pakistan started in 1948. Bengalis demanded to make Bengali their National Language after the order of Governor General of Pakistan 1948 regarding Urdu the only national language of Pakistan. Urdu speakers came from India after the establishment of Pakistan. They were not more than 3% of Population of Pakistan. Bengalis were 56%.
Sindhi, Pakhtun ,Balochi, Saraiki and other historical nations in Pakistan are still in conflict with Urdu till today. They are in struggle also for the rights of their languages. Urdu is also in conflict with English languages which is the official languages of Pakistan.
Conflict in Saraiki and Punjabi (linguistic conflicts)
Saraiki and Punjabi languages are regarded as the regional languages of Pakistan. Historically, both the languages bear their own individual linguistic temperament. But there is a conflict that the scholars of the Punjabi language are unwilling to accept the independent status of the Saraiki language stressing Saraiki to be a dialect of Punjabi. It triggered an interesting controversy in which the scholars of both the languages started calling the language of the other to be a dialect. This situation gave birth to a sense of waste and death of their linguistic identity among the Saraikis. As a result, the Saraiki speaking people got up for the preservance of their linguistic identity and struggled in the form of a movement for their national identity, which exists with the name of Saraiki nationalist movement in Pakistan, which is an important ethnic issue in our country today.
Linguistics conflicts and linguistics rights
Linguistic minorities can arise through conquest and colonization, immigration, enslavement, or the creation of political states that ignore locally valued ethnic distinctions. Where there are linguistic minorities, there also exist language conflicts and issues related to the rights of those minorities to use their languages freely and without prejudice. We will examine language conflicts in a variety of nations, and show how those conflicts have affected (i) the rights of certain groups to use their own language, (ii) groups’ efforts to secure those rights, and (iii) efforts to deny those rights through legislation and other actions. The course will analyze language rights from a linguistic perspective, cover language and nationalism with special reference to the situation in the United States, survey geographically and linguistically disparate language rights cases, connect all this to issues of language vitality and revival, and consider the ramifications of language rights to language planning.
