Third party D-pad replacement makers need to step up their game, they shaved corners and the result is impossible button press combinations. Bust out those calipers!

This happened to me with my see through d-pad kit I got from retro modding. I ordered a kit before recently but it was for an after market reshell and not an OEM case. I had to throw away the d-pad and use the stock pad.

Hey Kyle, I talked to Benn the other night and I let him know that there were issues with certain games where the freckle shack screen would turn completely white and flicker for a moment, these games are Pokémon yellow, Pokémon pinball and Zelda oracle or ages and season games, so if you see anything like this it’s a guess normal for now and he might see if there’s a workaround for it in future versions
@bengrimmett12395 жыл бұрын
Yeah its been reported and discussed on my FB and Reddit. It's interesting to note that the competitors kits do the same thing so perhaps there won't be an easy fix any time soon

That's why I always use OEM pads and buttons with aftermarket mods.

Maybe a drop of epoxy on the little bump of plastic that is too short would add enough thickness to prevent the issue? It should dry hard enough to last and you should do multiple applications if needed.

Wow, great video...again lol. Sussing out hardware issues and little problems like this is so annoying I tend to just accept them and move on. I am so glad to see someone doing the fine problem solving for the community. Since I'm dumping my hobby stuff to focus on my personal collection, this sprite issue would have certainly come up as LOZ LA was my childhood lol. Thank you for doing what you do Bro!

I kid you not, I came across this the other day while playing solar striker. Not so much of turning invisible but not being able to move in the direction I wanted. Also I'm using a 3rd party shell and had the same idea on how to fix it but never tried. Anyway, awesome video!

Thank you for explaining the problem. It was bugging me. The new problem is that I don't want to use the original D-pad because it doesn't match the colors of my build. I believe it would be the same for 99% of the people who have modded Game Boys, haha.

I backlight-modded my own with original case and new D-pad, and also bought one with new shell and buttons, and both of them cause Link's Awakening to be glitchy. Link will often disappear with only his sword showing, and sometimes Link will get stuck inside a pot or stone after lifting it, and wont be able to move.

Thanks for the tip but it does stink, mainly because I don't know if BoxyPixels Aluminum case buttons will have the same issue

This may be an issue related to patents. Nintendo's patent US4687200A for a "Multi-directional switch" is the reason that non other brand of console had a D pad quite as good a Nintendo's. Even though the patent expired in 2004, this may be an attempt to circumvent the patent by not making the nub, called "hemispherical supporting member 13" in the patent, round. The warning about not using parts from the original system could be related to the difference in size. Perhaps the rubber dome switch in the kit is slightly taller and/or firmer than the original rubber dome in the original system, to account for the design difference and make it more difficult to press illegal button combinations.
@MassMurderrer5 жыл бұрын
Is it the d pad? Because there's no nub on the bottom of the aftermarket ones preventing the pressing of all directions at once.

I'd so love to try out a FreckleShack modded GBC... Too bad I can't quite afford one just yet... But props to you and BennVenn for coming up with the kit and providing a much better alternative to the ever-increasing in price AGS-101 screens... I swear, if only Nintendo were to re-make those screens, it'd be a life-saver for the 2nd hand market... I guess we can only hope... Or maybe until someone figures out a way to fit a DS/DS Lite screen in a GBA or something like that...

I just installed the Freckle Shack, and I'm getting flashing in the unused space at the top and bottom of the display during full screen transitions. After talking to some people on EsotericSean's discord, I learned that it's normal, but in your video at 9:31, I'm not seeing any of the same flashing that I'm getting. I'm also testing it on Link's Awakening. It's like this... power on [flash] Game Boy logo [flash] cutscene [flash] start menu [flash] gameplay. I didn't notice any of that here. Is it simply not being picked up by the camera, or are you not seeing the same behavior?
@dylanstrife76523 жыл бұрын
I tested with Oracle of Ages on my aftermarket dpad in my GBC and interestingly enough that did not happen. Maybe there's a combined fault not only with the hardware but also with Link's Awakening? This was fascinating!

So, somehow the inputs affect the sprite display?
@queerkobold43745 жыл бұрын
Software Agents TV essentially, the after market d pad is making it so you can press all directions at once, which the game doesn’t know how to handle because it doesn’t have a sword swinging sprite for multiple directions. The game only has sprites for swinging in 1 or 2 directions and once, not all 4.
@chamoo2325 жыл бұрын
@@queerkobold4374 I remember seeing a speedrun video of Zelda Link to the past on Snes that is only possible on emulators. Basically the emulator inputs both Up and Down as Link went up some stairs and it made him phase through the stairs and from there he could walk outside the normal play area and walk straight to the triforce room. Games sometimes have very unusual behaviors when you do something that they never expected possible to do.
