The side that is hollow goes up, almost every time. And you can check first, the little hollow bits will be on opposite side of the plug and the port

start noting how many tries it takes you every time you go to plug it in and you'll see that rhett is right. plug in a usb enough times and it's mathematically liable to work out at about 50/50. feeling like that is called confirmation bias - i feel it too, but we're only human. we tend to pay more attention to bad than good because good probably won't kill you in the wild.
