Problem is one day they will die. Look how many people have said they won’t allow one of their books or whatever to be made into a film again like Roald Dahl and P.L Travers but once they die the family or estate allow it. It’s also possible that one day a studio will just throw so much money at them they’d be stupid to turn it down

So, the big reason why Back To The Future has never had any sort of legacy sequel is because the Bobs (Zemeckis and Gale) have been fiercely protective of the trilogy on a filmic basis, with one of them even saying it will likely be in their will that no further movies be made, as they do retain quite a bit of the franchise’s creative control. That being said, I also suspect it has a lot to do with Michael J. Fox’s physical health, as the rise of these legacy films has coincided with the worsening of his Parkinson’s symptoms.

IIRC, part of the joke in Back to the Future was that if you could actually get a Delorean up to 88mph on level ground, it would probably become a time machine all on its own. The car had a notoriously unreliable an under-powered engine.

@RobsonRoverRepair Жыл бұрын
Wrong. The engine was only under powered in the American market. They put a heavily restrict catalytic converter on the us market cars which had only 130bhp in the "federal spec" also lost about 40 foot pounds of torque, the UK / euro spec cars had 163bhp and the extra torque as standard. Having driven multiples of both it's significant in not just enjoyment, how the 262c engine also revs without the cat is significantly transformative. It works out as 105bhp per ton to 131bhp per ton. It's certainly not late 70s Lotus Esprit sadly, as the stainless cladded panels add 180kg of extra weight to it. One of the benefits of growing up in Northern Ireland, these cars, like the Titanic and Bushmills whiskey are hammered into you as part of your culture.

Honestly, the Back To The Future trilogy is a storyline that can continuously make the audience think about how time travel works, or what happens to one timeline when it’s changed or a new one is created. Marty constantly questioning what happened to the Marty from the new timeline he now lives in, or what happened to Marty in the timeline he used to live in. It’s something that not only creates an interesting story, but also keeps the audience talking about the ramifications of time travel or how it could go for you or another version of you. Truly something that can make you think.

There's a visual novel called Zero Time Dilemma which touches upon the same dilemma Marty has in this comic. In fact, a character blatantly references Back to the Future and posits something of a similar idea to what Marty has - that when he travelled back in time, he instead swapped places with a Marty from a different timeline, meaning that timeline's Marty is stuck in another one with no clue how he got there. Highly recommend that game and the whole Zero Escape series

The Telltale game has a really fun sequel story, but as a game itself it's mediocre, not like other Telltale games where the player's choices can drastically change the plot. The game is still fun to play, the newly introduced characters are nicely written and interesting, the returning characters feel like their film counterparts - A.J. Locascio does a great young Michael J. Fox impersonation, and Fox himself makes a cameo in the final episode, even Claudia Wells returns as Jennifer for a couple episodes, my favourite character has to be Doc though. Christopher Lloyd is great as always, you also have 17-year-old Emmett Brown (voiced by James Arnold Taylor, he does a great job sounding like a teenage Doc), the character is really well-written, I enjoy his story arc perhaps more now than I did when I first played the game 13 years ago. Emmett's story arc is also consistent with the themes of the films, without feeling like a complete rehash. If you spend time exploring the game, asking every character every available question, observing every object, you'll find some nice little easter eggs and even some minor character details.

This Back to the Future comic was cool and made me want to check out the rest of the series. Still, I consider Telltale's Back to the Future video game the only true continuation of the original series. While the gameplay wasn't great (and this was before The Walking Dead), the story was good and kept you invested episode to episode, the time travel was a lot of fun and fit with the spirit of the movies, and it had a lot of great world building and character development, especially for Doc Brown. It's honestly a really good love letter and epilogue to the movies and I highly recommend it, even if the game is dated by today's standards.

It's interesting because part 6 of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure deals with these issues near the end too. Thier answer was that the memories of people can be different but your soul is still the same. Also, the main villain gets erased from existence thus making every action he's even done not happen. Alot of this review and Marty's dilemmas just made me think of these points while watching.

My theory has always been that eventually the change in time would catch up to Marty, just like it did before, and effectively his memory of the past would be what it was. Luckily, his trip to the past wasn't an intentional attempt to change history, so in both timelines he still would have gone back in time, so it still all works out.

Oh, hey, I remember that yarn ball theory video! It was actually pretty insightful. It's interesting how popular understanding of time travel went from a single, fixed timeline a la BTTF, to time loops like Bill and Ted, and for now settled on Multiverse theory like Avengers Endgame. Multiverse is the most stable of the three, even if it loses the dramatic opportunity of single timeline paradoxes or clever planning of a time loop. But one thing about it that always bothered me is how it violated the conservation of energy. Specifically, how an entire universe's worth of energy comes out of nowhere whenever someone time travels. A pre-existing time loop (like I believe your yarn ball theory implied) solves this problem by pre-establishing that those other universes were always there.
@djquinn4825

I think my favorite version of time travel is where you can travel to the past, but only in a way that creates a causal loop (so you can't change anything that creates a paradox), and you can travel to the future, but doing so takes you to a future where you weren't around after time traveling since you haven't gone back yet (thus you can never see your own personal future). First saw it in a game I liked, though it kind of mucked it up at the end lol

Didn't think you'd be doing a Back to the Future comic. If you are wondering, I love the trilogy with my personal favorite being Part 3. I like Part 3 more than the other two because it felt like a sense of closure. Not only that but the best actor in the trilogy to me is Thomas F. Wilson who plays Biff Tannen and his various versions & counterparts. Not to mention that there was a Back to the Future game by Telltale that took place after the events of the trilogy where it focused on Marty McFly trying to find Doc Brown only to end up contending with serious time shenanigans involving a woman named Edna Strickland. It's crazy, I know. I hope you one day do more BTTF comics since it has done crossovers with one involving Transformers. No joke. Back to the Future with Transformers and a Transforming DeLorean. Back to the Future is one of my favorite film trilogies of all time, because of the memorable characters, the Alan Silvestri music, and it introduced me to the concept of time travel. Part I was one of the first movies I remember watching. Part III was the 2nd movie I remember seeing in the theater (the 1st being The Little Mermaid). I remember seeing the animated series being advertised on TV, as well as seeing some episodes years later. I also rode the ride twice at Universal Orlando back in 2002 when it was still around. 9:06- And I am thanking God right now that Pure Flix or the like DIDN'T make Back to the Future. But there is that movie Assassin 33 A.D., where Jesus haters use a time machine to go back an assassinate Jesus, and it's laughably bad. 9:57- In the Flash movie, Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne talked about the multiverse by using spaghetti as an example, and his universe is one where Eric Stoltz WAS Marty from Back to the Future. 24:42- Now I'm reminded of that deleted scene from the first movie where 1955 Doc is looking through the "personal belongings" of 1985 Doc, and he finds a hairdryer, cotton underpants, and a nudie magazine. Is that a BttF version of the AT4W theme in the end credits? If so, damn awesome.

Can you imagine what it'll be like, when Linkara did a review on Transformers and Back to the Future crossover comics? That would be so neat if he did that. But overall, nice review. I have seen all 3 Back to the Future movies, so you know how well prepared I am for this one.

The fact that Back to the Future hasn't had a nostalgic-baiting sequel or a reboot is a freaking miracle in this day and age. It's all thanks to Robert Zemeckis, who has final film rights to the franchise and has vowed to never allow a sequel or reboot be made as long as he is alive. I call this a win and that we should celebrate it.

It is surprising Zemekis hasn’t walked back given how much he’s sold out in recent years with stuff like the Pinocchio remake

@@skibot9974 That is true. Perhaps Back to the Future holds a very soft spot in his heart. I'm just happy that he's protecting the franchise. Back to the Future is in my Top 3 favorite films of all time.

01:33 I think, from what I've heard, one of the guys working on the BTTF movies has it in his contract from back then that no sequels are to be made with his approval, as long as he's alive. The Studio most likely would love to milk the franchise more, but, apparently, they have to bide their time til the guy dies.

Great review! I enjoy the BTTF trilogy. My favourite is the third one. I just love the Wild West theme and Mad Dog is a great villain for that film. I've got a few trades of the comic series. I've got Biff to the Future, Citizen Brown, (Which is based on the Telltale game) and the first 12 issues of the series. Recently reread them in preparation for your review, on the off chance I had the one you were going to talk about, and they're still good. Highly recommend giving the game a play. It's a good time travel story about Doc's past and what could have happened if he never got into time travel. Looking forward to the Amalgam comics and another cross of your "Comics I'd never review" list :D Keep up the great reviews :)

Legends of Tomorrow explained this theory when Professor Stein had a daughter in the new current timeline; he was slowly gaining past memories of her childhood as time was catching up with him to fill in the gaps.

Since you've now popped your Back to The Future cheery, perhaps you can now look at the Transformers/Back to the Future crossover comics. And I just realised, the Transformers have crossed-over with a lot of franchises in comics.

We haven't had a sequel or remake to the Back to the Future trilogy outside of the excellent Telltale game because the IP owner, Bob Gale, is actively forbidding it. And good on him for doing so.

You know Doc should have taken Marty to the early 2010s, then he could have showed him that Marvel's Avengers Assemble cartoon show episode where Thor ends up in an altered timeline because of Doctor Doom, where even with the alterations the Avengers still kept doing good and Thor told Doom flat out why even altering time won't stop them, "You miscalculated, Doom. Powers or not, my friends were always destined to be heroes. That will never change." That would have helped Marty with this crisis.

I took away two things from back to the future as a kid, Marty erased his original time line making himself a time orphan or Doc and Marty haven't figured out yet that alternate time lines exist. If there are multiple time lines then there is a chance Marty can go back but there's a new question as to how do we navigate time travel.

I once read this fanfic about how post-triology Marty would handle his new timeline, i.e poorly. He keeps unintentionally comparing the before and after, tries to study mechanism of time travel in library (in a semi-funny scene he comes across a Heinlein novel and the whole incest stuff hits uncomfortably too close to home) and starts to halucinate Doc at random times. It becomes so bad he starts to lose touch with reality, his family starts to take notice and take him to a phygolocist (amusingly, the fic implies one of the fellow patients is Donnie Darko). It ends in a bittersweet tone where Marty is on therapy, his family and Jennifer are supporting him best they can but he's no longer sure if the whole time travel sheningans, his old life or even Doc was ever been real. The fic leaves it ambigious if they were without insulting the reader.

The best part about Back to the Future is that if you had never known it had sequels it works as a single film, but because they actually had issues with getting the plot correct for the original sequel, we got two sequels that actually help build in and reinforce the themes of the first while still be enjoyable for their own merits.
