The other day i was having a discussion with a group of friends with varied tastes and preferences in music ranging from house to rap to rock to metal. We discovered none of us had common tastes anymore, but we all have one common root, Linkin Park. Its amazing how all of us in the discussion had no interest whatsoever in the musical tastes of others and yet all had emerged from being LP fans. Thankyou Linkin Park :) you united us in music.

This is one of the most honest mainstream songs about depression and suicide I've ever heard. It's lean, it doesn't try to cram a message down our throats, or be preachy or offer some kind of half-assed answer to "feeling better". It's just a 3 minute window into the confusion and hurt people feel. As much as Linkin Park gets made fun of, they do have some songwriting skills.

I would play this song out loud to see if my parents understood what I was going through. My parents really don't pay attention to lyrics of any song for that matter, they can sing them but never get the messages. Years have passed since when this song summarized how I felt, I was 14-16, but I fought through, reinvented myself and I gotta say I'm happy now. But I still remember how turbulent my teen years were. Many tell me to let go of those memories, but I keep them very close so that one day I may help someone else going through the same thing.

A common misconception about the song is that it was written by lead singer Chester Bennington due to his struggles with substance abuse. In fact, band member Mike Shinoda began writing the song before he met Bennington based on another close friend's drug addiction. "It was written for Chester Bennington since he had issues with narcotics," Mike Shinoda. He showed the lyrics he wrote to Chester who read them and teared up, relating to the words to a point where he had difficulty performing the song live for almost a year after the release of Meteora.

Well the song is about "breaking the habit tonight", stopping it, forever. The song is clearly about him feeling insecure and wrong, and he thought he should've done a favor to the others, "I don't know how i got this way, i know it's not alright, so I'm breaking the habit", and in the official video is even more clear with a man jumping off the actic.

Even if it wasn't written for a specific meaning, a song like this can have meanings that can reach out and speak to those who have wholly different situations. To others, it can seem almost exactly about their own personal struggles, or those of people around them. I know someone in my life that has some severe mental issues, he suffers from panic attacks and bottles up his feelings, only able to vent explosively long after, launching into tirades that he later admitted scared him, because he was arguing things he didn't truly believe in to the point of absolutely explosive rhetoric, arguments made in anger and confusion. And I know his past has been filled with a lot of trauma. Hearing these lyrics in that light, it's scary just how fitting they can be. Even if if was, as others have said, literally a song about someone detoxing from literal drug addiction... It's just unnerving how fitting it can be for other things, too. I wonder how many people outside of drug addiction can identify with this song, and for what varied reasons?

fighting depression, and suicidal tendencies; this song really speaks to me, listening to songs like this, songs that express the pain that others and I feel, it really helps.. I've tried to "break the habit" many times.. everyone has their own habit, mine is self harming (cutting, bruising, drug abuse, etc.) I have lost hope at many points in my life and have tried to end it.. but I know that there is hope in this world, if not for me then for all of you have similar problems.. from fighting depression, fighting others, or fighting yourself.. just know that just because you're alone for what seems like an eternity, you will get through it. I know for a fact that you will get through it, whether its by yourself or with the help of others.. just keep fighting, never give up. Everyone has their own problems but we can all make it through these tough times. If you feel alone, and you feel like no one is there for you, I'm here for you. I may not know your name but I know that we can make it. If you feel that this helped at all, I'm glad :), please take care of yourselves and try to have a good day.

I wish I could be your friend to teach this to you and to see what you can teach me as well. Blessed are the meek:for they shall inherit the world. Once yuo get over your traumas, your pain, your suffering you will find out that the grass is greener on the other side only if you decide to water it. Back when songs actually, HAD some meaning to them. To actually Be about life, only to be mocked for being "Bitchy emo trash" Life's complicated. Life's Painful, there's Nothing wrong to make art about that concept. if anything, it actually can help people. It can actually raise awareness to it. *Sigh* Fuck this meme, party, "Im in it for Me" culture.
@azazelreeds8 жыл бұрын
The best part about music like this is it's so well crafted lyrically that there is no set exact meaning, unless you ask the one who wrote it in any case, and it's able to reference anything that would make it reach the listener. If it can mean one thing to one person, and something different to someone else, while still conveying its message to both, that's true art.

This is my favorite linkin park song cause of its duality and depending on your state of mind you can take it as two different ways. One way is with committing suicide or the other is pulling yourself out of the darkness and “breaking the habit/cycle “ I really wish Chester could’ve done the latter but not everything can be healed. This is one of the few songs from this band that talks about helping yourself out of the darkness that i’ve heard.

For all my friends out there in a dark place; this is for you. This lyrics has spoken to you, and I think we all know what it's about. Unfortunately (as most now know)the head singer that we all know and love killed him self, took his life, etc.. But you miss him don't you? You wish that he never did such a utter full move, huh? I know what some of you are thinking and I know y'all loved him but ask yourself this.. "Is it worth me giving up my life for?" People loved him and looked up to him. Some fans shy others rowdy, but still fans; correct. What about your fans? Your family, friends, lover ( gf, bf, hub, wife, etc..) or even your companion(s). What about you? Why should you take a life that was brought into this world to live and be happy! And for my younger audience... It will all be over soon, besides he is watching over all of his fans. Fans just like y'all. ----------------------------------------------- *My Note* : Sometimes you take the wrong turn, but that never means that your lost. So, keep finding a way out and try to enjoy whatever you can; no matter how small the time you have that happiness may be. *~In my eyes you are worth fighting for~* ( Sorry for any grammar mistakes ) 2020 Edit: Hey guys, it’s been a while hasn’t it? I’ve read everyone’s comments, and everyone has mixed emotions. I completely understand. If anyone wants to talk 1v1 whether it be a rant, need of any advise, etc. You’re always welcome to contact me (via my Discord: 🤍Klaus The CornSnake🤍#3710) .

The fact that someone took the time to type this out for a complete stranger who he/she doesn't know (the reader of the comments) but knowing that they might read this shows that you (the reader) already have people who care about you. They might not know you, but the message to take out of this, and of the song as well is that you're not alone. You might be lonely, but you're not alone. Take care, whatever you decide to do, but if you ever need people to talk to, you will find them. YOU'RE NOT ALONE. And one more thing: accept what's happening THIS MOMENT, and it will be easier to deal with. A lot of pain in our lives is just from resisting a fact that we can't change (at least not in the moment) and then it just kills us slowly. Just accept it, and cry it out, but accept it, breathe the knowledge through your whole body, and THEN decide what you want to do about it, look for the truth. I hope this helps. That's all that anyone is trying to do. Take care, brother/sister

@InsanityRena10 жыл бұрын
TheIndieGamesNL well thats not entirely true. there are many inspring pop songs. they are just more infrequent on radios i guess. ive been inspired by pop songs before just as well as whatever genre youd call linkin park. im not good at song types. "titanium" "perfect" just to name a few.
@TheIndieGamesNL10 жыл бұрын
InsanityRena Okey yes i have to give you some credit, sometimes pop songs have meanings but mostly the stereotype is sex and partying, then you also have stuff like britt pop alternative pop rock etc. so the line is pretty blurry (''blurred lines btw sucks'')
@InsanityRena10 жыл бұрын
TheIndieGamesNL yeah that is true i guess (and blurred lines is basically the embodiment of the general population's ignorance and stupidity, but thats not the point.) but the style of these popular pop songs are to make people feel good, and most people dont listen to the lyrics anyway. i just wanted to say was that both genres can be inspiring and not and its basically just the singular song. i mean i dont really like the pop songs you've described, but that only has to do with the voices, style, repitition, etc., but i cant say the genre as a whole is better than things like linkin park and stuff, cos these kinds of songs can be pretty depressing and sometimes encourage sadness. but then again, its based on a persons individiual opinion and interpretation after all, so i wont call you out on having an opinion!

We push the limits and while animals need to adapt when things change we change things and dont need to adapt. Becasue we are so impressive you cant just give up. Just find true morals. Find bad morals in what deppresses you and you will live better. I read a lot of pshyhology when i was your age and i was inspired with army morals long before i was 12 so i know how soldiers faught in wars, that can also help. We are great. These lyrics will never sound the same again...RIP. "I don't know what's worth fighting for Or why I have to scream I don't know why I instigate And say what I don't mean I don't know how I got this way I know it's not alright"

I listened to this a lot when I was getting sober and got on antabuse. I come back occasionally and listen. At the moment I'm close to 2 years and 4 months sober. Thank you for your SOOO relatable lyrics, Chester. RIP :(

***** 'go fuck yourself and your dog" like i haven't heard that before, the fuck you be having for breakfast? bitch flakes? i know what i would find if i look up idiot in the dictionary (their response a picture of you and your name?) no a definition of an idiot which you are. i'd slap you, but that'd be animal abuse. have a nice day at pre-school kid (:

zetachi001 When I see your name in the dictionary I see "He who feeds the troll" .. just don't respond to him, he'll shrivel up and die.

I used to listen to this album during my first depression when I was younger. I felt understood. Thank you Chester. We miss you.
