Mike wrote this song about one of his friends from high school and when he brought the song to the group it really affected Chester. Chester had a hard time recording this song because he was struggling to break his habit of drugs and alcohol at that point. Chester had a very bad childhood. He was sexually abused by an older boy who he thought was his friend for 6 years so at 13 years old he turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the mental pain he was dealing with. On top of that he was being bullied at school because he was under weight from the drugs and alcohol he was doing. When Chester first started with the band that would become Linkin Park he was doing everything they say not to do when you relay on your vocal cords. And yet he had no problems singing any song he wanted to. Chester is loved by so many people because of his willingness to share his own personal experiences in life and only through his music. He was very open about what he was going through with his mental health problems. He shared his problems so that other people know that they are not alone in those struggles in life.

Chester's voice always breaks my heart open -- it's the innocence in it, like you said. He is deeply missed. I don't think I've expressed this in the comments before; I love your reactions and analysis and for seemingly having a genuine love for all vocals and music through your expressions, including being open to every song you've reviewed on a "Merry Month of Metal." I also appreciate when you get a bit reflective at the song's end. Keep up the great work, Ken.

This song is about suicide. I got the meaning the very first time I ever heard it. Chester's pain came thru from the start and as someone who has also struggled with suicidal thoughts, I could relate. When I found out years later that Chester had taken his own life, my heart just broke. I try to keep him in mind when I'm having a down day...he meant so much to so many people. You never know who you might help or impact along life's journey, and at almost 53, one thing life has taught me is that you never know what or who is around the corner. I know it sounds cliche, but hang in there! I get chills every time I hear Chester sing--especially this song and the LP song When They Come For Me. His voice held so much pain. I wish I could have helped. Rest In Peace Chester. You are greatly loved and missed.

This is one of my favorite Linkin Park songs. Right around the time this song came out I had joined the military, went through all my training then abruptly kicked out without any time to acclimate to the sudden change of going from Military life back to civilian life. I thought I’d be fine. But I ended up addicted to cocaine and severely volatile as is humanly possible. This song and band definitely was one of the only things that got me past that point in life. I’ve gone through a lot more since then but I’ll never forget how Chesters voice pulled me out of the noose, so to speak, numerous times. I’m slowly working my way back to being able to listen to this band again. I still have only listened to them through reaction videos since Chester died. RIP Chester🤘🏼

Breaking the habit live smokeout festival 2003 first time ever preformed this song,at the very beginning of the video Mike asks Chester you sure?and Chester said:yes then they started playing the song,it was also one of the top performances of breaking the habit!chester was extremely emotional while singing tho he was on key and sang the shit out of it! Losing Chester was like losing a friend you grew up with but you had moved away from. Someone you had so many memories with but didn't see often. And losing them left you full of regret and made you realize how important they were in your life this whole time. My regret was not taking my daughter to see LP. I saw them live when Meteora came out and my daughter's first song she sang was Numb when she was 3 because I always played it in the car. She's now almost 23 but I learned my lesson and we have since seen Breaking Benjamin, Alice in Chains and Foo Fighters together. Concerts are our mother/daughter thing.

Being able to scream with so much clarity where you can still understand every lyric is a talent that you almost never see. Chester was a legend. I don't give a flying fuck when a celebrity dies, I never knew them. But I cried when he passed.

I didn't appreciate Linkin Park on more than a surface level until about 10 years after their debut album hit. I was in late high school when that came out. After a few years out in the world, my God...that stuff hits different. Chester was baring his soul to the world, and I can feel that on another level at almost 40 than I ever could at 18.

They have 2 singers, 1 male and 1 female, both can sing clean and unclean/scream vocals , his vocal range and ability is amazing , she also plays keytar. Plenty to unpack in their music.

Lincoln Park reminds me of elementary school, being a poor kid from Utah moving to Arizona. One cool thing about the district I lived in in Arizona is they allowed free music classes. That was the only year I played viola. I was middle chair. Asian chick number one chair. Lol anyway……. This song brings good memories.

oh man.. knowing what a psychological and neurological wreck Chester was.. plus probs the drugs and drinking he did in early years and this breaking the habit.. like if you were to loop that "I painted on the walls - fight again" over and over and if you consider his life, efforts that regardless he was hard working and did his best for the family, friends and fans... he was quite great for someone tearing apart at the seams that didn't let himself stop and chill for a minute because it seems some bad stuff bottled up comes back to haunt him.
