Likely due to the hyper-compression. I used a de-compressor called "Perfect Declipper" on a track by Magma Dragon called Dungeons and Flagons. I showed my brother and he asked, at one point, "Were those background singers always there?" I had also suddenly noticed the background singers. Wider dynamic range makes things clearer.

Dear everyone arguing about AutoTune. Yes, they use it but not as actual "auto-tune". They are using it as pitch correction which is basically tightening notes and fixing sharps and flats. Backing vocals and harmonies ALWAYS have it, even if the singer did perfectly because it makes everything sound smooth and nice. Lead vocals have it sporadically to fix pieces here and there. The brand they use to do that doesn't make a difference in terms of HOW they use it. Basically, if they didn't use any sort of pitch correcting it would sound like it wasn't done professionally. Now you can all shut up and stop arguing cause you're both right AND wrong.

So beautiful. And there is a lot of harmonizing in the corse you miss out with the music.
@gibsondanny9 жыл бұрын
its not really there for use as a harmony, its intended to Thicken the voice up, and make it more prominent in the mix. Its really cool hearing it on its own though
@disrupt949 жыл бұрын
Danny Pearce i think it is there for the sake of harmonizing. Why would Mike sing the lower harmony live otherwis?. Chester's voice is thick enough with doubling as the chorus of somewhere i belong proves. For some reason they buried nearly all the of the harmonizing in the mix during their early days :P
@gibsondanny9 жыл бұрын
Ludvig Burman Its just the way it is. Im not saying that he has a week voice. It is just a way to cut through such a dense mix, Recording engineers (like myself) do it all the time. i mean, its not harmonically interesting. Just 4ths and 5ths.
@OddJobKid999 жыл бұрын
Danny Pearce I agree that it's probably mainly there to beef it up but the fact that the alternating lines have different harmonies, they probably intended it to be at least a little interesting, you know? That's the way I see it. If it was ONLY to make his voice more noticeable, than they wouldn't have changed the harmony to the lower octave along with adding a whisper and making the track less wet on every second line in the chorus. I mean, that's just my take on it but maybe I'm wrong or maybe there's no right answer because it's all music and relative to the individual :)
@disrupt949 жыл бұрын
Danny Pearce harmonically interesting is subjective. Sometimes simple harmonies just sound the best. There are several examples on Meteora where Chester uses no harmonies but instead just keeps on doubling his voice. Yet the vocals in these songs are not less powerfull or more buried in the mix than numb. Mike singing stuff live (especially back in the day is typically a good indicator for what harmonies the band deemed important.

Let's go ahead and end this debate once and for all: Linkin Park have openly endorsed Antares products in the credits of every album they've released going all the way back to Hybrid Theory. They use Auto Tune. You can even see the Auto Tune plugin open on a few Pro Tools screenshots from the various Making Of/LPTV-type videos they've released over the years. They've even been using it on Chester's live vocals since the beginning of the Living Things touring cycle in 2012 (confirmed by former members of their touring crew who I know personally). And you know what? There's NOTHING wrong with that. Auto Tune is about as "industry standard" as a plugin gets, and contrary to popular belief, Auto Tune doesn't just make you sound like fucking T-Pain or Kesha. It's a pitch correction plugin. You can make it sound almost completely transparent if you take the time to tweak the settings just right. Chester's a GREAT singer, but he's not fucking perfect. Nobody is. If he's singing somewhere in the 90-95% range of what's needed for the vocal take to sound the way they want, Auto Tune will get them that last 5-10%. It's on this track, and it's on damn near every other vocal track that's ever made it onto a final mix of a Linkin Park album. Nothing wrong with Auto Tune, but if you think Linkin Park doesn't use it, you're wrong. End of story.

I've been to the last two touring cycles they have done for Living Things and the The Hunting Party and Chester was noticeably pitchy at the second to last show of the Honda Civic Tour in Carson that I attended. Chester is a great singer, not perfect because he choose emotion over technicality. If they were using AutoTune, then how could I hear the obvious pitchiness in his voice?
@LPGuitar9 жыл бұрын
mslpfanatik They only use it for certain songs/portions of songs in the live set. Guilty All the Same is probably the most noticeable one because for a lot of the first part of the Hunting Party tour, they had the wrong scale put in for the Auto Tune on that song - they were using D natural minor instead of D harmonic minor, so the plugin was incorrectly turning all the C# notes Chester sings in the verses into C naturals. There are a few proshot videos from May/June of 2014 where it really stands out. The Leave Out All the Rest/Shadow of the Day/Iridescent medley is another one they use it on.

Dear Chester You've done a hell of a job. Every single person has to listen to your voice at one point of their life. Your voice always help us when everything else is falling apart. You will never be forget - we will always miss you. Good Bye buddy, rest in peace...
