The plinth and speakers are in a custom VW paint finish. The Majik 109 speakers are currently available in the pre-owned/ex-demo section of our website.....

I love that colour. I didn’t realise that the dealer had to do the complete build, no wonder Linn love their dealers! I bought one as my retirement present last year and absolutely love it and my dealer came and installed it and took a couple of hours to listen to some of my music collection. That’s what I call customer service. I wish Linn would do an official budget 2 speed power supply similar to the Hercules as I don’t like the faffing about involved with the adapter. In fact I use a second deck a Linn Basik with my old Ittok and K9 for my 45’s. A third deck a new Rega P3 is used as well with Audio Technica’s AT610mono cartridge for my growing collection of 1960’s mono records. All wall mounted so that they all fit nicely together. Great video by the way.

The plinths are available in any RAL (or automotive finish). This happens to be a VW finish - Bay Leaf Green. Automatic speed control on the Majik LP12 would be a good idea... but the current manual methid is also a good motivation for the Lingo IV upgrade. We have another video on the channel that covers the plinths in more detail here kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3zYiWOPbayAndE

Brilliant, thank you so much for doing this set-up guide, really interesting. I've wanted an LP12 for about 40 years and thought of buying a second hand one from the 80s. Having seen this though and how much they've improved, but still looking the same, you've changed my mind and think I'll be buying a new one. I'll pop to your showroom to look at finishes.

Hello Brian, The Majik LP12 is supplied with a manual speed adapter for 45rpm - but it is a bit of a faff to keep changing. See ripcaster.co.uk/Linn_45rpm_Adaptor_for_Sondek_LP12_Turntable_50hz

Always love seeing Linn video’s. As a dealer, you should definitely do more of them. YouRube is short on Linn video for some reason. I had 3 LP12’s over the yesrs until I went 100% streaming. I always had the aformosia base but this new color is awesome!!

Sir, you have single handedly made me reconsider the decision I had made to never purchase a Linn Sondek LP12 again. My story. I bought an '83 LP12 from a friend who worked at a store that sold them in Sarasota, FL and abruptly closed in 1984. That's a story fit for an espionage novel for another day. He was not involved in the intrigue that surrounded that store and I acquired it from him in 1992. A new store emerged in Tampa, FL just 2 hours to my north. The owner became my "rock" to keep my LP12 running at its full potential; that is until the day came when he stopped caring. (He is no longer in business). It is my understanding that this was not an uncommon phenomenon among Linn Dealers around 2,000. The decline of the LP and lack of support from the parent company led many a faithful Linn Dealer to lose the fire and after spending $2,800 in upgrades (Cirkus, Lingo, Trampolin, new arm board for my Ittok, Adickt cartridge, etc,) well, let's just say I got home and felt like I had been had. I kept the Linn sounding less than stellar until we moved to Tennessee in 2015 and a "shade tree" audio store in Kingsport, conditioned that I purchase a Rega Elys 2, took my Linn completely apart for $100 (they did not have the Jig or Rig or whatever it is called) but took three weeks to disassemble my 'table and reassemble it (the tech, although unfamiliar with Linn's in particular was a bit of a genius and studied the 'table and restored it to its former glory). Here's my current dilemma. That store is out of business and the nearest Linn Dealer is in Atlanta, a four-hour drive. We have had several discussions as to the best course forward; sell my current Linn and start afresh with the Majik, or keep the old goose going. But he is four hours away! But your brilliant video has a least shown me the care that has gone into this deck and my only sorrow is I don't have someone like you near me. 1 hour would be fine! End of story. I would love to give my two cents worth to Mr. Tiefenbrun!

I love the idea of an espionage novel based around a Sondek LP12 featuring an inspector Klouseau perhaps. Sounds like you have been on quite a journey. Please email info@ripcaster.co.uk with your details and we can provide you with options via Linn and our contacts in the US for the next chapter with your beloved 'old goose' or something Majik and beyond. Thanks for watching and the story of your LP12. Jon

My lifelong hifi nut friend sold his LP12 and purchased a rega 3 with a 250 tonearm and a cheap cart. He has around 1000 lps and 3000 cds. He plays mostly cds now, as they sound better through his system . Naim pre and power...52/135s hi cap and Sbls mk2. Cd player is a Rega Isis, which he got second hand from the sale of his LP12. Previous cdp was and Arcam 73, which sounded amazing, but that rega is something special. Stick with the rega. He hasn't purchased any vinyl for a long time now, as the quality is nowhere near what it used to be.

Thanks for the video. The adjustment of the tonearm was not shown unfortunately. I would be grateful for instructions on that. Also just a curiosity question - how did you adjust to 33 1/3 rpm ? My thought is to use a scope. Also what weight does the tonearm need to be at? Thanks

Great video, thanks. Would you mind sharing how do you adjust the counterweight on the tonearm. Do you have to unlock it somehow or unscrew something?
@ripcastercouk
@ripcastercouk 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. The counter weight is simply rotated and this moves the weight forwards/backwards. The theaded counter weight has a friction device to ensure the weight doesn't move once in the correct position.

Ya know I thought I always wanted a Linn until right about when I saw the motor speed needs to be adjusted with two screws … that’s after I already reluctantly came to terms that we need to assemble this whole thing… this man has patience enough to work on a bomb disposal squad… I’m speechless…. So it’s up to the dealers to assemble this whole thing? Really?

Great video. Hoping to upgrade my Rega P6 later this year. A P10 is the obvious choice, but I think I'd love an LP12 more. Majik spec with Lingo perhaps?

@ripcastercouk 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. The beauty of the LP12 is that you can upgrade the components to match your requirements and budget. The Lingo IV is a very good choice as it gives 33/45 rpm motor control with feedback. ripcaster.co.uk/Linn_Lingo_IV_Power_Supply_and_Speed_Control

I purchased a P10 and on the first day was so disappointed that I put it back for sale . Big hype and great technology but nothing close to the LP 12. I compared A/B with a Hana SL on both the P10 and a Linn with Kore/Akito 3B/ Lingo 3B/ Cirkus/Trampoiline and the P10. Not close. Bigger soundstage, better base, better place,ent of instruments and voice. My 5 cents. Plus now I have the advantage to upgrade when I want with the same turntable.

Starts at over $5,000 USD. I don't have a problem with the price but I don't understand why they can't figure out a way to have them as a competed assembly ready to ship like most turntables. I understand it has that spring suspension but why not have a way to lock it for shipment?

Why didn't you show the torque for the main bearing? Meant to be 12Nm but that is wrong it is better 18Nm
@ripcastercouk
@ripcastercouk 9 ай бұрын
Hello Jedi-mic. The correct torque setting for the main bearing is 3.5N.m. Overtightening the bearing can damage both the bearing itself and the sub-chassis. The whole build takes significantly longer than the 30+ mins shown here - so not every detail is show.

I am surprised and astonished about how crappy a turntable this is for the budget. A superlight plinth, singing swinger plate, a motor control right next to the bearing, a cheapened out on/off switch compared to the vintage model, a hard mounted little motor to the plinth cover, suspension adjustment by pre-load increase only, no further damping, from underneath, basically no better, just newer than an old Thorens TD150. Sure it’s cult and in standard form is very likely better, but it cost over double what a new, modernized Thorens, that is actually better than the Linn in frabrication and comes fully set up from the manufacturer, no dealer DIY. You want even better for the price? Get the TD1600/1601 with TP160 arm. You’ve got to spend multiples of that with Linn to improve the obvious crappy parts to establish a sound beyond the Thorens’ Capability, exchanging motor, bearing, motor control, plinth, springy chassis plate and dampers, and tonearm, by then Linn will have charged you another 10-15K or even more.

Thank you for watching you raise an excellent point... The Majik LP12 shown is calibrated to 33rpm using two adjustment screws by us the dealer. The Selekt LP12 and Klimax LP12 use electronic speed control featuring tachometer feedback. The video shows the whole assembly process performed by us the dealer as part of the customer service to ensure you get the best from your records - this isn't something the customer does. The musical information stored on the grooves of a record is small and subtle. You need a turntable that is correctly setup to extract this information from the record. It is simply not possible to ship a delicate piece of equipment through a courier system and expect it to arrive correctly calibrated.

@@ripcastercouk I live in Hawaii. There was a Linn dealer here many years ago but he moved away. I think I could probably set one up if I had the jig and associated tools but I must say it looks very methodical and mindfully slow going! I have a Sota with SME IV but haven’t used it in years. Sota has a convenient speed control knob for adjustment.
