Linssen Yachts would like to help you with 'tips & tricks' to increase your pleasure on board. This series of sailing instructions can help you get a better grip on your yacht.
In this video, we show you how to drop and lift your anchor in a safe manor. It was produced by www.start2boat.be with the cooperation of Aqua Libra Yachtcharter.
Lowering anchor
Select a suitable anchorage with sufficient space. The vessel should be able to turn 360 degrees around the anchor.
Look at the instruments and determine the water depth. The amount of anchor chain you should lower is 3-5 times the depth. In strong winds, lower more anchor chain.
Slowly sail against the wind to the anchorage and bring your Linssen to a standstill by reversing.
Have your crew loosen the securing rope of the anchor chain. Then lower the anchor slowly to the bottom, manually or electrically. If you have marked the lengths on the anchor chain, you can easily see how much anchor you are dropping. As soon as the anchor touches the bottom, slowly move backwards while the chain continues to run. The anchor will now fix itself in the bottom.
Check that the anchor is securely in place. You can do this by firmly pulling backwards for a moment. Finally, hoist the anchor ball, so that those around you know that you are at anchor. In the evening and at night, use the anchor light.
Hoisting the anchor
To raise the anchor again, work in reverse order. While you slowly move forward, your crew slowly hoists the chain. As soon as you are above the anchor and the chain is vertical, it should be possible to raise the anchor completely. Always keep an eye out for branches or other debris in the chain or anchor. If this happens, stop hoisting immediately and remove the obstruction first.
