From what I can tell, they have hardcoded an adblocker into the video stream so it’s not possible to toggle it.

If the youtuber can get in on a subject of a sponsored ad, thats the best way to do it, like "here is a segway to our sponsor".

@4:20 I actually primarily watch KZbin on my phone’s browser. While the UI might not be as fancy and capable (as well as having to manually change resolution every single time), it rarely, if ever, gives me ads. Whenever I use the app or the desktop site I feel like I’m watching cable TV again.
@jg3743 жыл бұрын
Does your phone's browser discard cookies fairly often? That would explain settings like resolution resetting. In my experience, youtube generally doesn't show ads for the first video or two on a new browser / one with no cookies, so clearing cookies on the desktop often is good at reducing the number of ads. I use an ad blocker on the desktop site and hardly ever see any ads - it is quite a shock when that extension isn't working properly for some reason :). The same thing occurs when I find a useful website and send a link off to someone who needs to access it for something - sometimes they can go from being very useful to complete scam.
@stitchfinger76783 жыл бұрын
Adblockers will probably never represent an actual threat to anyone that's already making money from the platform. Most people are simply not tech savvy enough or too ambivalent to change what they're doing. Or, like me, you do most of your consumption on a console or smart dongle and really can't block ads anyway. (I know Pihole works for that but its a whole thing I don't wanna do, and YT shuffles the ad domains sometimes anyway)

According to hootsuite, nowadays around 43% of all users use an adblocker, I wouldn't say that's negligible. @KrankuSama3 жыл бұрын
In this case, Vanced goes a step further than adblock as they also have a feature that automatically skips baked in sponsorship segments, a sponsor block. The fact is that I got a Ridge Wallet for christmas and an ifixit kit too because they stuck in my brain as products that a tech company uses and without exposure to those sponsorships then I may have never made those sales (or got them as gifts i this case) Ultimately I am in favour of users controlling their own content, I hate ads in all forms and I don't give a damn about a companies profits but industry people coming out and saying that adblocks and sponsorblocks hurt their revenue aren't being duplicitious, they are saying it for a reason.

I understand that ads are necessary for some to make money, the issue is that I feel ads have gotten completely and utterly out of hand. They are being forced into everything and everywhere and being as obtrusive and obnoxious as possible... and even carry malware in some cases. The web had ads for years, yet, the amount of people using adblockers skyrocketed only recently.... ads have also gotten incredibly excessive recently. There is a correlation here. The ad companies keep making their ads worse and worse and then try to point their finger at the user and paint them as the bad guy for having gotten fed up and blocking them. Even the whole fiasco with KZbin removing dislikes was ultimately due to the corporations not liking that their videos of crappy products can get downvoted into oblivion.

I use Vanced. I like watching long-form content on KZbin, like debates and podcasts that may be several hours long. I also like watching 30-second video game highlight clips. KZbin has made watching either kind of content absolutely miserable. The long stuff will just be filled to the brim with ads. Ads every 3 minutes. An hour long video will have maybe 15-25 ads in it, adding significantly to the length of the video and lessening the watching experience. Short content will usually have a double-ad in the beginning, basically doubling how long this quick little clip was supposed to be. For the videos the algorithm prefers (8-10 minutes), the number of ads is tolerable, but for anything longer or shorter, the ads are truly excessive and annoying, and I use Vanced to get away from that shit. I know it hurts content creators, but in my mind, KZbin hurts content creators, because if I wasn't using Vanced, I just wouldn't watch the videos at all because I find the ad to content ratio off-putting.
@OKNathan3 жыл бұрын
I mean you could pay for KZbin Premium and support the creator economy since you use the platform so much and get a lot of entertainment out of it. Unless you're a student or something EDIT: 1. You’re rewarding creators for their work, KZbin only take their cut for providing a platform. 2. If a channel doesn’t have enough subscribers (only 1000 required) and watch hours to be in the KZbin Partner Program then of course it doesn’t reach the minimum threshold to be monetized and won’t make money. KZbin Partners like me have full transparency on KZbin Premium views, CPM and revenue (55-45 split with KZbin). 3. As a viewer you either have a free ad-supported service or subscription-based alternative. People talk about Floatplane as a solution but it’s a paid service. How is that different from paying for KZbin Premium? It’s your choice to use AdBlockers and not reward creators for their work. I was just pointing out that if you spend more time on KZbin than any website (Spotify, Netflix, Twitch, …) then obviously it provides you a lot of value and it’s not unthinkable that like any service it costs money for both the creator and the platform and needs to be either ad-supported (KZbin) or subscription-based (Floatplane/KZbin).
@MTB538503 жыл бұрын
@@OKNathan Wouldn't that just mean that we would be rewarding KZbin for sh*t practices. Oh, you made my experience absolutely miserable here's some money to reward you. I used to pay for Premium for a while, but there is no transparency on how premium revenue is allocated to demonetized videos for example and unless the creator meets their threshold for getting money out of youtube, you're just enriching the platform that treats both creators and consumers like crap. The only real solution would be an alternative platform which to be fair LTT is trying to do with floatplane.

In regards to the Intel/AMD stuff: All that being said, AMD as far as I know never/rarely pulled the kind of anti-competitive bullying tactics that Intel used over the years. AMD pulled ahead despite all the illegal tactics used against them, thats why people excused some behavior and think of them as an underdog even today. However, ultimately, as a customer, always advocate for the customer, not for a company. Any company. That doesnt mean being unfair against a company, but also dont give them more time/energy/money than they provide back to you. Buy whats good value, dont buy into brand loyalty nonsense.

@TexanMiror2 - They have not.. no. That being said they've literally never been in a strong enough marketing position to do so. They've been a 2nd-4th place competitor for their entire history. Even times like the current market and the Good Athlon days they were still far, far behind Intel in terms of market dominance. AMD has gotten ahead in the enthusiast space a few times over the years but the massive dollars and production numbers of Dell/HP/etc and the server markets has always meant Intel was an enormously bigger player in The Market than AMD was.
@iClone1013 жыл бұрын
And honestly, I don't feel like AMD is being less friendly to its users because it's risen from being the underdog, but because of the situation it is in and simple business management. AMD's biggest hindrance right now is its supply chain, as they can't put chips out faster than people buy them. They've had to shrink their different offerings to keep a somewhat sustainable supply of the few offerings they've kept, and naturally they are going to want to keep the ones that make them the most profit, which in this case appears to be their 8-16 core mainstream processors. Shortly before Covid, AMD tried to release the Ryzen 3 3100 and 3300X, which were legitimate entry level processors, but very few of them ever made it to market because of the supply chain issues that hit shortly after. They have no reason right now to expand their offerings, because they are struggling to keep even their highest profit margin products in stock.

The ad model is 100 years old. Innovation is needed. I can honestly say I've never purchased anything from an ad. That being said, most, not all, but most of my favorite content creator's are demonitized anyway, so obviously there are other businesses models that work, or they wouldn't be in production. I really like the nebula initiative but I wish they had a better app and more content creators

I choose KZbin premium specifically to help my content creators, along with one specific item from their shop. I bought a desk pad from your store (amazing quality btw), I bought a golden GN t-shirt, the superb book from Kurzgesagt and so on. However, I am really against the removal of the dislike button and I am now facing a major challenge because I won't allow myself to watch ads. I just won't. So either I go back you standard KZbin and Spotify, and you guys get no money at all from me (I will use AdBlock, that's out of the question), or I just suck it up and continue forward with each shitty decision from KZbin. I'm considering floatplane but I wish more people that I watch were going there too. The big KZbin name is something we cannot leave behind, yet it's starting to be obvious that they only care for money and their shareholders, like any big company would anyway. Meh. I've spent most of my video watch time on KZbin over the 10 past years, and I sure don't like paying for it right now, even if that means no money for my content creators. I guess I'll just patrons the s*hit out of it and give 0 money to KZbin.

I started using Vanced when I realised that the amount of time spent watching ads in my life was really adding up. I pictured myself in 30, 40, even 50 years and how many hours, days and weeks of my life would add up to having watched ads. That's time you can't get back in life. I'm all for supporting creators, but I refuse to give up a chunk of my life to watch shitty ads that are either a) shit. b) trying to psychologically influence me. c) bring me out of the experience and ruin the enjoyment of the content.
@MichaelSheaAudio3 жыл бұрын
I don't have a problem keeping ads on to support the creators that I enjoy watching. It is extremely apparent how ads have increased over time though. Multiple unskippable ads, multiple ad breaks during videos, multiple ads after the video, etc. And I know that frequency of ads can be controlled by the creator. You can have no mid-roll ads, which is great. It does all come down to money though. And even the content of some ads is extremely questionable and KZbin/Google shouldn't be approving that content as ads. For example, music videos. Why are music videos full of profane lyrics being used as ads? Why are ANY music videos being used as ads? They really need to put a cap on how long an ad is. I've seen like 30 minute long ads. That's insane.
@Teth473 жыл бұрын
The frequency of ads can sometimes be controlled by the creator, unless they get certain types of (extremely common) copyright claims whereupon control over monetization is transferred to the claimant and usually absolutely maxed out.

A company is not sentient. The company doesnt disagree with things, the people who run it do. The PEOPLE.
@zac86703 жыл бұрын
Yes/no. While I completely agree when it comes to a company making unethical decisions with widespread damage and then not having the people held accountable, I also understand that running a company also means making decisions best for the company's interests. In that regard, a company is an entity with goals, purpose, and requirements for existence. Unfortunately, that concept has been taken way too far, giving advantages that should have never been given, while skirting all the disadvantages and responsibilities.
@christopheraplin3 жыл бұрын
He's saying the company is the people. The people's salaries, people's want to expand and grow and create a sustainable business. The interests of the collective company and it's profit requirement to operate is very different from individuals wanting to create great content regardless of profitability. In a sense, the company IS sentient. It is the medium to speak to those needs. It might not have thoughts, but it always has questions.

Damn the attitude of "my company exists to make money and so must be and is morally detatched from me even though I own it and am in charge of it" like no man, if a company acts a certain way that absolutely reflects on the owners, if a company does something I assume the owner approves of it entirely because they had to approve it.

It's more that the only companies able to survive are the ones that behave this way. It's natural selection shaping companies and companies shaping the environment that is selecting them, just like living organisms. Except that companies eat people and breathe money. If you were 5 or 6 breaths from having no air, and so was everyone else, and there were 6 balloons left, none of you would be stopping to consider the moral implications of taking one of those balloons, you'd rip a 6 year old's head off for one more breath. That's the world companies live in. That's what needs to change if we want this to improve.
