8:00 But using the Northern lights for the logo is just perfect this year. Due to the 11-yearly rise in solar storms on the sun, this year the Aurora Borealis is visible in a way larger area. Last night it was even visible throughout almost the whole of England. It's almost like they knew that the night before the finale it would be visible in a surprisingly large area....

While the logos and theme art remain interesting, I HATE that Liverpool 2023's slogan "United by Music" has been stolen and co-opted by the EBU as the defacto slogan for all shows going forward. Not only does that take away creative choice from design teams looking pair the theme art with a bespoke slogan, but "United by Music" was chosen very specifically for the context of Liverpool having to host the contest on Ukraine's behalf due to the war. Take it away from that context and it becames stale and generic.

It was very interesting seeing you and Fernand go through these logos, I was very much unaware of what Eurovision looks like in general, let alone before 2004. It's fascinating to see how many of the logos / art styles are a reflection of the periods they were used in. To me it really exposes how Eurovision helps shape the aesthetics we associate with those periods. The 1985 logo is the most obvious example to where it almost feels like a parody today, but the 1997/2000 have a distinct cybertech-ish feel that would fit right in with that Matrix-y vibe. Going back a little further, those 1970s logos used for the Dutch festivals feel really, REALLY 1970s to me. Even the more modern styles you guys highlighted (ones that that I consciously lived through myself) really LOOK and FEEL like they are "of that time". 2007 is almost a perfect reflection of what the internet/computer aesthetics felt like in that era - the Myspace era right before modern social media, platforms like ICQ giving way to Skype, a "macromedia flash"-like quality to the animations. It ties in a little with a late "frutiger aero" aesthetic. 2011 gives off those quintessential talent show TV program vibes - it looks and feels exactly like generic swipey text effects for an American Idol/America's Got Talent style television ad. My favorite might actually be Dublin 1995 though, it looks like a logo for a jazz festival, not Eurovision.

As a Eurovision fan, thank you for this! And thanks for inviting a fellow fan to explain these things. I wanted to ask last year, when the contest was held in Liverpool, if you could do a design review of all the participating broadcasters's logos. Watching clips of Eurovision performances from before made me fascinated by the idents that always appear on the top or bottom of the screen.

As an American I've never had much exposure to Eurovision (I only just found out yesterday that Céline Dion's international career was launched by her winning 1988 performance!), but I always appreciate your design insights and it was fun to take a trip through design history while learning about Eurovision along the way. I also really appreciate you providing high quality captions, which unfortunately even some creators with millions of subscribers fail to do--it really makes a big difference in intelligibility compared to the autogenerated ones, particularly for specialized language! I did want to point out a few points for correction, though. I've divided them into two sections: the first section contains all the critical bits that significantly impair meaning, and the second section is a superset which also includes minor errors including nitpicky style aspects that are debatable. So unless you want to go over the captions with a fine-tooth comb, feel free to ignore the second set! 02:52 San Marino → Sanremo 03:14 Tadeum Introduction Music → Te Deum introduction music (Te Deum is a composition by Charpentier) 03:53 Artia → RTF 04:19 here. → [delete] 05:35 I → that 05:43 And similar then → In a similar vein 05:54 micro gamma → Microgramma 10:38 makes it timeless → makes it so incredible 12:52 our team → RTÉ (national broadcaster of Ireland) 13:04 it's → ??? 13:08 a, → ??? It was fascinating to see how well each of these map directly into CARI aesthetics. 7:32 Cyberbougie, baybee, which was unexpected and kinda funny because I've struggled to find examples of it in the wild! 9:45 Supergraphic Ultramodern, a defining style of the 1970s with all those geometric, flat logos. 10:50 This isn't quite pure Memphis Milano, it belongs more to the styles that were emerging at the same time and eventually melded together into what CARI calls "contempo-eclectic", which came to define the 90s. I like Memphis Eclectic myself, I think it's a little more useful a name. The logo is very early Contempo Eclectic (see also the MTV logo in the 90s), but the stage design looks more like 80s art deco revival to me (Deco-Luxe in CARI's termonology) 11:19 this seems to sit at the limit of Laser Grid style and Silicon Dreams. Those stripped logos look very Laser Grid to me. 12:12 circling back to Memphis eclecticism again, but with a different take. The 90s were recognizeable and yet extremely plastic because Memphis eclecticism was borrowing and merging together a bunch of influences like new wave design and art deco (especially for its figurative motifs) 12:38 I'm surprised you're not making a dig at this for being a triple-swoosh logo lol 12:43-12:48 I think these would belong to Global Village Coffeehouse, a really weird place to encounter it! The second one does have aspects of Corpo Grunge/Memphis eclectic, though. 13:33 I see a little bit of Abstract tech (that one is from Aesthettics wiki, not CARI), but this is not really grunge. It looks like typical Corporate Gen-X Cyber to me. 14:24 We've moved all the way to Vectorheart now 14:52 We're in a somewhat late appearance of Ultramodern Revival here 15:16 This one is a little harder to sort because I'm not as familiar with it, but I'd say it's CARI's Synthwave. 15:40 This looks like Hexatron with heavy Metalheart influences. 16:00 Before Corporate memphis took over we had Vector Minimalism. This is it. 16:20 the way patterns were use is Corporate Memphis, which goes to show the grip that that style managed to achieve.
