I bought my fold 3 as an A++ refurbished unit a year ago, rather than spending the same on a new Pixel. I really havent looked back either. There are ways as long as you are careful, to get a fold for far less than the MSRP. The phone arrived basically looking brand new, and still has zero issues to this day. The only thing I had to do was replace the screen protector around 1 year into owning it. Which seemingly is common. This only cost around £8

I'm pretty much in the same boat... I have some minor nerve damage on both hands, which isn't bad enough to really complicate my life in any meaningful way, but it does make a couple of my fingers feel pretty stiff and clumsy at times, which can make hitting small keys really frustrating. Problem is, I'm kinda broke, and because of the aforementioned reason, I don't trust myself to not drop my phone constantly, so I don't really want to commit to a 3 year payment plan 😂

Depending the region, they aren't as expensive, especially when compared to iphones. Androids are a completely different situation though. For example, i bought my fold 4, brand new (pre-ordered actually) in UK. It was around 1650£ in price. Got about 200£ off for my broken galaxy s10+ in trade-in costing mein 1450£ at the end. On top of it, Samsung bundled in Samsung care+, a charger, 1 year disney+ subscription, s-pen, a case and their latest galaxy buds 2 pro which alone were worth 220£ at that time since they were launched alongside the fold 4. Comparing that with Apple which doesn't give away anything for free, it was quite a deal, especially considering foldables are still in their infancy in terms of tech. But again, comparing with other androids, the price does seem quite a lot, especially since Samsung bundles most of these things with their S series as well

I was due for an upgrade and decided to give a fold phone a try. I thought I wouldn't open it often but it would be nice for certain things. I am finding so many reasons to open it. I actually enjoy the smaller size when it's closed, I wear and XL glove and found most phones difficult to hold and use for one hand operation and this fold phone is so much more comfortable. I also really like the thicker size when closed and it actually fits better in a pocket.
@TheOldSchoolCrisis
@TheOldSchoolCrisis 7 ай бұрын
Not only does it fit better in my pocket (shorter and wider on the Pixel Fold was actually what sold me on it), but the thicker device is easier to hold. I find that with normal candybar phones they are so thin there is nothing to really hold on to, and I would drop mine pretty frequently. I have (so far) dropped my Pixel Fold exactly 0 times. (Knock on wood). It is just so much more gripable and easier to handle due to both the thickness and the overall size being shorter. I am not having to slide the phone around in my hands to reach the top, and it is just generally super refreshing to have a phone that is actually designed for human hands to operate. I never thought I would be a fold guy. I have seen them around for a while and always thought they looked cool but niche, expensive, and gimmicky. But the Pixel Fold has sold me 100% on the design. Samsung has been wasting their time with their crap tall and skinny Z Folds.

I expected to open it all the time, and I do. Any time I'm using both hands on my phone, it's open. Any time I need to show a picture or video to someone, it's open. It comes in handy at my job at a school, because in the event I need to show a group of students something on my phone, they can actually all see it - this has happened 2 or 3 times in the 3 months I've been working there full time. Is it worth $1800? I don't know. Is it worth the $600 I paid for it secondhand, less the $150 I sold my old phone for? Heck yeah. And I'm sold on the form factor, next year I plan to trade in and upgrade for $540 if a similar Black Friday deal to this year appears, a total of about $1000 to try a Fold 4 in 2023-24 and then get a Fold 6 - a far cry from spending $1800 on a Fold 5 like the list price would make you think.

I went for a Fold3 due to the large screen size helping with my visual impairment. While you can increase the font size on a regular Android phone, a lot of apps break as they just aren't designed with that in mind. The larger screen helps prevent app layouts breaking. I did need to get the screen protector replaced recently, just outside of the 1 year Samsung guarantees them for, but they replaced it while I waited free of charge.

I just upgraded from a Fold3 to a Fold5 - the screen protector has gotten much better and almost no apps break. The 3 to the 5 was big leap (4 to 5 is more incremental) and you might look into it if you're due for an upgrade.

I've totally seen (well, at least I tried) that movie. Note 9 is completely horrible in that regard and I'd love to have a Fold instead... but that price tag is putting me off hard. BTW the real $#!+show goes in the Google Play App if you switch off automatic update with that CHUNGUS warning banner that you can't click away on top asking you to enable auto updates, being so HUGE that you can't manually update your apps anymore, because they aren't even listed on the screen anymore. Hate having to reduce font size and zoom everytime for that. C'MON, GOOGLE!

The best indicator for when foldables have come far enough to be viable for the average person is when Apple makes one lmao. It doesn’t have to be one made by Apple, but you can be sure that Apple will either jump on the trend once it is good enough, or will make it good enough and then other companies will catch on.

All these points make sense, and I would buy a folding phone if I didn't already have a flipping one. For my use case in particular, the super compact form factor of a flip far outweigh the advantages a fold brings simply because I work in construction. Yes, I am frequently in dusty environments and working outside in hot weather, which doesn't sound good for a flip phone, but the size of it means that I can fit it into those little chest pockets on safety vests/jackets and keep it up and out of my gross, sweaty pant pockets. Plus, if I do get a phone call during the day, it's always quicker and easier for me to grab my phone out of a chest pocket than digging into the pockets on my work pants. The other big selling point for flip phones for me is that, in contrast to one of the points in this video for folding phones, I have quite small hands. My hand size means that even candy bar phones, like my last Pixel 3 XL, were literally always a 2 handed operation. The extra narrow profile and extra small size of my new Z Flip 5 means I can use it one handed, and my entire hand can wrap around my phone like a child holding onto their favourite toy if I don't want to drop my phone accidentally. Yeah, these 2 reasons I mentioned are honestly pretty minor in the big picture, but they have managed to be such important and critical factors of how I use my phone that I wouldn't trade my Flip 5 for any folding phone ever.

I’m really debating on buying the next Flip to come out. I’ve currently got an iPhone 13, but I’m beginning to become bored with this locked ecosystem. They don’t really offer different sizes, and I like smaller phones which is why I think the flip is perfect. Full phone and I can fold it in half. The Fold isn’t bad either, it’s just not what I need rn.

@@MelonHead830 I haven't ever been in the Apple Ecosystem really other than back in 2010 I bought a MacBook. I wouldn't really count that though since I had completely stripped of apple software within 6 months of owning the thing. Slapped rEFIt on it and went to a fully windows only install. But, what exactly does the Apple Watch really do for you? I am asking because I have a TicWatch Pro 3 GPS which I have been using for about 3 years now and honestly the only feature I ever use is seeing notifications without having to pull my phone out while I am at work. Don't get me wrong, it has a TON of other features, but I just don't really find them very important in my daily life. What does the Apple Watch do that is so important to you that you would be willing to stay locked into a subpar phone? I know it can do a lot and I have friends who are in love with theirs. But, I just don't really understand what it could possibly be doing for them that is so important they would stay trapped on phones they really don't like. Like, my friend Christian has told me for YEARS how he would love to switch from Apple to Android, but he loves his watch too much, and I just legitimately don't get it. It almost feels like someone telling me they would love to buy a new car, since their old one is lacking key features, but they are worried about losing their aftermarket infotainment system. Maybe I am just missing something truly magical about the apple watch though.

The problem I have with foldables and the primary reason it cant replace my tablet is the aspect ratio, most of what I use my tablet for is video playback which is either 16:9, 18:9 or 21:9 and all of these end up barley being much bigger on a fold due to the big black bars on the top and bottom than a regular phone. For me it is much less about having the perfect device for any given specific task, and instead having one device that is able to do a serviceable job for every task, and that I have on me at all times. As Linus stated in the video, you aren't going to have a tablet in your pocket everywhere you go, but you will have your phone. And while the folding screen is FAR from perfect for modern video content, it is still a MUCH better viewing experience than the standard phone display. I recently upgraded from a S21 Ultra to the Pixel Fold, and what really sold me on it is that I felt like I wasn't making any compromises on my phone, and instead just getting a bonus tablet mode. With all of the Z Folds I never liked the form factor since it always felt like Samsung set out to make a super mediocre tablet that had to be able to turn into a phone, while google made a really solid phone that also featured a serviceable tablet. It will never be the best device for the job when it comes to tablet things, but it will always be the one I actually have on me when I need it.

My wife and I both had fold 3's just about the same age as Linus's, until about a week ago. Thought by version 3 should be pretty "worked out" and LTT had reviewed them. I'm a coder so I don't go out and get dirty, etc., so keep that in mind. My inner screen, out of the blue, just crackled and broke down the fold, nothing in there .. just crrraaccckkk. I do not unfold all the time just when I need more visible space. It worked, but with a big black bar down the middle. Needless to say it was not paid off and I was not happy. My wife and I agreed, with a case these are kinda heavy and a bit bulky. The outside screen where you spend most your time is rather narrow. Apps don't seem to consistently support the narrow outer or wider inner screens well. I loved the larger screen for the size, my vision isn't great so its nice to have a bit more space for bigger stuff. It was great on planes for movies and such. In the end we paid off both of them early, traded into Samsung for the cracked and uncracked trade in's and both got S23 Ultra's. I'm thinking the screens are really a risk point still. Something to consider. The weight/size is noticeable. And really did not use the inner screen to justify the risk. I don't code on it and not a content provider like LTT so probably not as useful to me as for him. Its way too much money for the risk. I still have my old S1 candy bar on a charger still running downstairs. Go figure.

The foldable screens aren't a cheap technology, nor are they a durable one either. In fact, they seem to just be a way to get you to spend more money on something more expensive because it not only costs more, it wears out faster. Planned obsolescence is a thing. And with right to repair laws coming into play again, they have to make thing need repairs to make any money because they can't make them one shot disposables anymore to force the sale of a new device instead of an affordable repair. It makes sense in a business model to head in the direction of making the repairs needed the most expensive repairs they can manage to...

With the Fold 5, Samsung made a Foldable that doesn't have any huge compromises in terms of build quiality and should be the new benchmark (no doubt there are some better Chinese foldables but availability is an issue) from now on. Other than the plastic screen (which I never made a scratch for almost 3 years I used a Fold 2 before), it looks like a normal phone, feels good in the hand, no gaps, wedge shape, creaks, or cheap materials. We'll have wait and see if there are issues with the screen like with the previous version ( I personally never had that), but after one and a half it's still perfect. Now that big screen phones are gone, this is the only real option to have a proper size screen available. Plus when Folded half, it's a tiny phone for one handed use. The price is an issue, but at least the Flip style phones are getting reasonable (and buying a second hand Fold is always an an option).

Both of these phones are around a year old model when I got them, so New enough to give good performance and get good support still but also missing that new phone premium price. By the way, T-Mobile was giving out the 1 + 4 free. And it is a mid-range phone just by having 2 lines but it was within my budget either way.

8:57 had the same issue with my first Flip 3. The screen protector also serves as a barrier to not let those plasticizers escape from the top most layer of the screen. Once those plasticizer are gone the plastic screen can no longer absorp the folding procedures that well causing the top layer to crack open. I now use Whitstone premium film on my Flip 3 and this one holds up strong since almost a year now. Most likely gonna use this also on my Flip 5 once it's screen protector starts to bubble up.

The only problem I had with mine, as you mentioned, was the micro cracks in the crease of the folding screen, and I used that 20% of the time. Luckily, Samsung let me trade it in for $800, even with the screen cracked. Let's hope the newer generation folding screens hold up to daily use without cracking after a year of use.

I love the idea of using a big screen foldable phone but I don't even buy phones at flagship prices so the price is a big no no for me, and I would consider spending close to 999 for one of these if they could last 5 years without issue, but as Linus pointed out, the foldable screens seem to be too much of a hit or miss, you always see a new post from someone who has a fold telling their screen died or has bubbles, etc. In other words, it is a cool luxury/rich-enthusiast device, it's an expensive phone that only makes sense for someone that if it dies in less than a year or 2, you won't be too mad about having to buy a new one (or just can't afford to replace). So, for the time being I'll just wait and hope that in a few years they start to last more and get cheaper, we'll see.

You can get case stands if you actually need an on the go stand. The benefit of a larger screen is massively overstated; the vast majority of things a larger screen benefits, like remote desktop, remain a nightmare with onscreen keyboards. You're far better off, if you need a big screen regularly, carrying a thin portable monitor, keyboard and mouse in a backpack. It's a better experience which is dramatically cheaper, and wearing a small backpack around is convenient for many other reasons. Of course, you can also just go for a laptop in that case too-you can get a reasonable _gaming_ laptop in the price range of most folding phones, lmao. Split screen is and has been available on other phones for a very long time, but again, it turns out split screen isn't actually that useful for things phones are used for. I do use split screen on my candy bar phone to watch videos while I do other things, and it works OK for that, but basically any other use can be solved with widgets: why not have your conversation or contact list full screen, and just a little floating widget for your active conversation? Folding phones might be attractive for people with very high budgets who don't care about the price. If you don't have to worry about spending an insane amount on a phone you will almost certainly need to replace in a year or two, a folding phone is marginally better than a normal phone at some things, sure. But it's absolutely not worth the money for the vast majority of people and even then, a backpack setup kicks a folding phones ass at literally every minor advantage it has over a 'candybar' phone. It's a status symbol. That's it. Which is fine if that's what you want, but pretending it's a practical option is ridiculous.

I have to stress the durability part here a bit more. Up until the new folding-phones, phones only got more robust and durable by eliminating mechanical/wear-parts. No more pull-out antennas, no more mechanical number-/letter-keys, no more slider-phones, no more ports that can wear out (wireless charging and wireless audio). So a "bar" style smartphone right now is basically an inert block, that will stay intact forever unless you break it by mishandling/dropping it. A folding phone on the other hand re-introduces a mechanical wear-part that will fail sooner or later just from normal (!) use. Pair that with the fact, that a defective folding mechanism or broken screen cannot be fixed for a reasonable price, and you have created the most expensive and highest tech consumable ever. This will also have a strong impact on the used-marked. Why I would have no issue using a regular 2nd hand smartphone, as long as it was well taken care of, I would be very hesitant to buying a folding-phone that already has got some dirt in the folding mechanism or some delamination in the center of the screen. So a folding phone is the best compromise yet for having a tablet and a smartphone in the same device, but it doesn't come for free. And I'm not talking about the price upfront, you are paying for this convenience by reliability and longevity. If you're the kind of person to happily spend 1500+ $ to have a cool tool for 1-2 years and then consider it "written-off", then this is the pinnacle of this way of life. But if you value longevity and would like to have a device usable for 5-10 years, this is simply not going to happen with a folding phone. I honestly don't get why so many people allegedly care about sustainability and on the other hand innovations like these get so much hype.

What's actually fun is that, instead of having a huge phone, I ended up choosing to buy a smaller phone instead :The Unihertz Jelly 2. The reason I chose this phone is because I also felt like my phone was cutting me appart from the people around me. Advantage #3 doesn't work for me on huge phones because instead, I have tiny hands. So I kind of prefer having a small smartphone. On that tiny smartphone (credit card sized), I can theorically perform any action a big smartphone can do, but I just end up not wanting to spend time doing it, because it's so small. So when you said having a big phone made you spend more time reading, I believe you, because on the contrary, I tend to read less... but to compensate, I use my Samsung tablet a looot when I can settle down. Which really makes sense about having a foldable phone... but as a woman with women's pants, these huge phones are just so uneasy to fit in my pockets.... And, I really like to be able to choose the time I want to do productivity things, and not just feel like I have to be doing 12 things at the time all day long because i CAN with that owerpowered phone I carry in my pocket. Funny thing, one of the things I really enjoy about my Unihertz Jelly 2 is the same as the last point of your video : it's so nice to see some original phones ! so rare nowadays ! It always makes people start conversation with me and I just love it. I feel a lot more connected now that I have this phone. :) That said, I would still consider having a folding phone in a future... If a find an easy way to carry it around. I just love new and different things. Please, phone making firms, stop just making boring huge phones ! And thank you linus for that video ^^

I got my LG G8x ThinQ with the dual screen case back in 2019 and still use it today. I *much* prefer it to a foldable due to it having none of the negatives you mentioned, except thickness. It's basically like running a desktop with two monitors instead of one ultrawide. Running separate apps always works and, if you crack the 2nd screen, replacing it is easy and less than $200. It's age is showing, though, with the speed and camera not keeping up to modern standards.

Ive been on the Fold 3 since it came out and I absolutely love it. For me, the biggest downside was the screen protector for the tablet. Just like how Linus described it bubbling up, mine did as well. Took it off (including the one on my front screen as well) and havent had any issues. Plus, the screen protector isn't that great anyways that is pre-installed. If we could have a flexible gorilla glass (i know wishful thinking) would be better than the flimsy piece of plastic they used as the screen protector. Plus, after taking it off, the images are much more clearer than they were before.

I'm driving LG G8X Dual screen for 4 or 5 years, since its release. It has all the benefits of dual screen without any downsides of it: You can pop off the phone from the DS frame and have normal sized device when the need arises. I love it. Yes, it has giant divide at the center, but without the second screen and productivity it gives I feel limited.

If like me you hate having even a normal candy bar in your pocket but want a nice big phone screen, the flip style phones are great for many of the same reasons. That said, one thing he didn't touch on too much is the fragility of the screen itself. It's basically plastic so it's not very scratch resistant and can be punctured with enough pressure. JerryRigEverything has great videos about their durability

It's just insane I would never go back.

A few weeks ago, I saw a promotion that Samsung was doing with trade ins. It was pretty generous, they offered far more for my old phone with a dying battery than I ever would have gotten anywhere else, so I finally bit the bullet and got a new phone after seven years. I went with the Z Fold 5 and while I haven't had it very long, I agree with pretty much everything in this video. The extra screen real estate is just so nice. Once you get used to it, you really can't go back, at least for certain tasks. Others, are just fine on the front screen. Though, at least on the Samsung, the front screen really is cramped. The height is fine, but it really needs to be about a half inch wider. I also, can't argue that the thickness and the weight is an issue. It really does feel like you're carrying around two phones in your pocket. The worst part though, I'd like it to be even thicker, just so they can get the cameras absorbed into the body of the phone, that camera bump is massive. Biggest issue that I have with it, is actually opening the thing. The hinge has fair amount of force behind it, so you really can't open the thing accidentally. That's good. The bad is that the sides are just so smooth, it can be hard to get a decent grip on the thing to pull it open. I'd like to see some ridges along the side to really be able to grab on to it to open. You can buy cases that do this, but due to the nature of the phone, you have to basically glue them on, and I really don't want to do that. I know it sounds like I'm complaining, but honestly, if you watched the video, you already know all of the good things about the phone, so no real reason to repeat them. If you're thinking about moving to a foldable, and have the money, or can find a good trade in deal, they are honestly fantastic devices.

I have a fold 4 and i agree with most of what you said. Except the wider outer screen thing. The inner screen is already almost a square, widening the outer screen by just a small amount makes the inner display more squarish. Unless, of course, they go the pixel route and introduce big bezels on two of the sides, in which case it might he fine. Take Vivo x fold 2 for example, it has a wider fromt screen than gakaxy fold, but the inner display is almost a square. Its a problem for media consumption, everything else works fine. Personally, i more interested in rolling screens in phone. It has the potential to give us almost aspect ratio we want on the unrolled screen. And when its rolled, the screen can be a standard aspect ratio unlike Samsung's super tall one. But, i understand that with the material science we have developed so far, the durability of that rolling screen will be a big question, just like the outer folding phones of huawei

Really good video, but you missed some important points. Not all foldables are about expension. Some are simply about reducing the pocket size. I just upgraded from a Z Flip 3 5G to a Flip 5. I love the fact, that I have a full candy bar in my hand and it still takes away so few space in my pocket. Also, I never had any problems with the screen. The screen protector needed replacing every few month. But I went to the next Samsung store and it was done in 15 minutes for 20 €. A glas screen protector on a candy bar is not cheaper. To be fair, the battery is smaller and I payed 1000 € for a 500 € phone, just for the fact that it folds. Still, as I mentioned, I just upgraded. And you also forgot to mention, that the flip is much cheaper than the fold...

I own a S23 Ultra. I looked at the folding phones but, not sold on them yet. I agree a larger screen on the road would be nice without bringing an extra flat panel with me. The problems at the end if the video, screens cracking, screen protector issues, they were really bad on the first and second gen phones but, getting less of an issue now but, they still have the problem. They are very expensive and can be prone to problems STILL. Neat tech but, I think in 5 more years, I might get one when you never hear about cracked screens besides when someone drops a phone, I might grab one. The biggest thing with my phone, I turn it on and works as it should. Too critical to take a chance where I might have a problem.

I disagree about people WANTING bigger and bigger phones. I think 5.8-6.3 inch is about as much as anyone would want especially with today's phones hitting >90% screen to body ratios. I always preferred Sony's Z Compact series phones, I admit they were a bit on the small side for comfort but they were very easy to carry and still did everything I needed without complaint, and when I finally had a Z5 it was too big. I think the limit is your thumb comfortably reaching across the screen when holding the phone normally. Obviously if you have bigger hands then you can get away with more but for me the S20 I have now is where I draw the line. It's actually a taller but narrower phone than my Z5 was and its just the perfect size to comfortable reach the other side. The difference between a 6 or a 7 inch phone when it comes to content consumption is negligible, yet in actual physical practicality it's insane. I honestly think phones like the + versions of Samsung phones are way too big and past being a useful size. You can't fit it in the breast pocket of most jackets (even my S20 is pushing it), can't put it in a jean pocket without it crumpling if you sit down, etc etc. The Fold makes sense because of it's ability to multitask, but the difference between a 6 and 7 inch phone is purely screen size, and that to me is pointless. There is also the little thinks, some a specific and niche to me: like mounting a phone on handlebars of a motorbike, putting it up on a phone holder in the car, putting it in the centre console in a car, all of these would be impossible with an S20+ for me.

i just stopped using screen protectors. My s9 had one built into the lifeproof case, but newer life proof cases don't have them, and I refuse to use a stick on protector. And the s21 ultra actually has a really solid screen. Like I had microscratches STILL in my s9. Those little swirls from trying to clean it once with a paper towel. I don't generally try to do that, but I tested it on my s21 ultra and nothing. Zero scratches, even using sunlight to try to get a good view. It's a much more resilient screen. I don't go out of my way to be completely absent minded with it. My keys stay with my wallet in the other pocket, but still i've never had an issue.. Correct me if I'm wrong, but foldable screens are softer as well.

10 Reasons (and a bonus one) I DON'T Daily Drive a Foldable. 1. I just turn on the flashlight and keep the phone in my chest pocket, no need for a stand. 2. I don't take selfies. For timed ones, I have friends who have very good DSLR cameras. 3. I have big hands, but I use swipe typing. If you're still tapping keys there, what rock are you living under? 4. I don't need to look at contacts without closing the current chats. I focus on one chat at a time, and have wholesome chats with friends and family. 5. I focus on one app at a time, and for social media I have dedicated half an hour blocks in my schedule. No doomscrolling. 6. I don't play retro games nor watch older movies on a phone all the time. I much prefer an old CRT for that. 7. For my bigger screen needs, I use a TV or my laptop monitor. Never needed bigger screens on the go. Unnecessary weight. 8. After using all kinds of note taking apps, I went back to a simple notepad and pen and writing with hand. Much much easier. 9. I don't see the need to draw at the same time. Letting kids take turns will increase their patience levels. 10. For the social aspect, phones aren't allowed in the dining room. We just talk about our day instead until the food is ready. 11. Just saying a hi should be good for starting a conversation. I don't want my conversations to always go around my phone, because that limits the topics.

ive been running a iPhone 11 base model (as foldys like to call a candy bar) and ive had multiple screen protectors within the past 3 years ive owned it (roughly about a year per screen protector and thats only because im VERY VERY hard on my Devices like utilizing the water resistant nature by having youtube on in showers) the main reason i myself am not going to foldables is the screens i hate dealing with cracked screens and knowing that if i buy a phone and within 3-6 months (do to my personal use case) the screen is cracked im just going to resell it as a used device and buy a phone that i know can make it to my desired upgrade cycle of a new device every 4-5 years (depending on technological shifts in the market. as i am looking into actually going to a 15 and i am a lifelong samsung user untill i got my current iPhone) once the cracking issues and the short lifespan of the Foldables are improved i cant see myself owning one. if you have the kinds of money to throw at a new phone every year more power to ya but ill stick to my iPhone 11 (and eventually 15 or 16 depends on which ever one comes 1st) Edit: and yes ive also weighed the pros and cons for myself and a massive Pro would be the screen size as i have rather large hands hell i struggle typing fast on a razer blackwidow 2019. but the even bigger con of the screen lifespan outweighs it. yes i want bigger but i also want long term reliability
