The biggest holdup I have with getting a Galaxy Fold(or folding phone in general) is seen pretty easily in this video. It's not how nice the Fold 6 is, it's what the Fold 4 looks like after 2 years. The bubbling up on Fold screens, micro cracks, hinge not opening all the way, etc. - it's not quite at the level of reliability I would be comfortable with. It's a real shame too because every time I see the Fold I love it. If it was a reliable mobile phone, I would immediately pick one up. Maybe they are getting there with reliability, but I would like to see how the current generation Fold's fare over the next couple years.
@rishabhsarraf59854 ай бұрын
That's true mate. I had a fold 4 which ran into issues multiple times. Both my screen went black after 1 year of usage. I switched to s24 ultra now when it ran into another issue where my BT and wifi stopped working everytime when I was on cover display.
@Chardan0014 ай бұрын
Likewise. If the thing could last around 3 years before issues, I'd be more inclined to look into these. Especially now the Fold 6 is even more expensive than the 5 too, it's harder to justify jumping in. 5 seems to be holding up so far from what I've seen however.

Conversely, my Fold 2 is still completely fine. I replaced the inner screen protector because it started bubbling up a bit around the crease recently, and that's it. Still folds flat, doesn't creak, no cracks, just a few microscratches on the cover screen around the edges. All this despite having dropped it a few times (while closed, fortunately). That said, I probably won't get a new Fold unless it's on a deep discount or my 2 completely breaks down. These prices are absurd. (I also got the 2 on a discount.) I also wouldn't take my anecdote for evidence that these things are tanks - they're obviously more fragile than non-folding phones, so if you've ever managed to break a regular phone, stay way the hell away.
@bhanwarlal20074 ай бұрын
Fold 4 is the most broken samsung fold ever. I myself have had 2 fold 4 bend halfway on me. On the other hand fold 5 have aged so nicely for so many people. You can't even find a single fold 5 that doesn't open flat online. Fold 4 had some issues with it bristles that got stuck in hinge and lead to it not opening fully. But since fold 5 those issues have been resolved entirely and they are lasting way longer than the previous.
@Elvewizzy.4 ай бұрын
Mainly the reason why they made the trade - in deals from the 4 to the 5 so amazing last year. Gets the 4's out of circulation, reducing the repairs. Heard from a friend who works at odido that the flip 4 had a massive return/failure rate and as a result, the 5 didnt sell as well, but had virtually no returns/failures. So something deffo changed.
@phoenixwright7844 ай бұрын
This is kinda why I decided to upgrade from the 4 to a 6. My fold 4 had an issue earlier in the year where it didn't seem like it kept it's charge as well as it used to and seemed to run hotter than it used to and the screen wasn't staying on and it wouldn't connect to my wifi and according to the internet, it was likely an issue with the hinge cables and it was sounding like it was a fairly common problem with the fold 4. I've heard that the fold 5 seemed to iron out those issues so even though I didn't necessarily want to upgrade, I figured it would be worth the slight upgrades + the piece of mind. Assuming that many of the issues the fold 4 seemed to have have been mostly fixed, I should be using this phone for about as long as the planned support is.

Elijah is 100% right about the camera bump, many modern phones have such a massive camera bump that it sticks out even WITH a slim case, which is absolutely insane. Either make the phone thicker or stop trying to cram in cameras that don't fit. Samsung has some older phones that have a camera which pops out from the body, I'm sure they could get significantly better camera quality if they brought that back while also eliminating the camera bump.
@drvel4 ай бұрын
Ive gone from Fold 2 to Fold 4 to Fold 6. Completely disagree about filling out the thickness till the camera bump is flush!. I want it thinner and lighter! Battery life gains should be from efficiency. Elimination of camera bumps should be from periscope tech etc. Not brute force fattening. On a table it's easier to pick up, or it's in fold mode with the flat face down on the table, so don't mind the bump. The thinner in hand feel makes a massive difference for me.
@nothingmuch66664 ай бұрын
Agree regarding camera bumps. I hate them with a passion too. My Fold 4 has the same hinge issue, though not as severe. For me it happened immediately following the device overheating while charging, would no longer unfold completely and the screen protector bubbled up when previously it had shown no signs of bubbling. Guessing that the heat softened the adhesive and allowed the bristles to move inside the hinge and get trapped. As for the screen protector, it's almost like the heating and cooling shrank it a little because it seemed like the screen protector was slightly too small to stay adhered to the screen while unfolded, like it was being pulled taut instead of being loose enough to follow the curve of the display. On a $1900 USD phone, the fact that they haven't upgraded the cameras to at least match those on their flagship non-folding phones is absolutely CRAZY. But the fact that they haven't upgraded them AT ALL for 2 generations is even more appalling.

Honestly, this. Every time I see a tech youtube say they've barely changed anything, it makes me realize they're basically just looking at the spec sheet. When I upgraded to the Fold 6, I expected it to basically be the same, but it feels completely different. Actually really happy with the 6.

Agree 100% on the camera bump rant. The only counter argument I can think of is that a thicker phone will also be substantially heavier. Since the Fold is already a bigger device this could make it legitimately uncomfortable to hold.

I had my F3 for a year with an official case on it. The case wore away at the black finish so much that I ended up trading it in the following year for an S22 Ultra, looked like it lived in a bag of sandpaper for all of its life. Aspect ratio on the front screen was awful too, constantly had apps crashing or not displaying buttons because they weren't designed for such a slim screen. Hoping to go back to this or next year's fold though still, the inside screen was great

@@MitchBowman93 Yeah the aspect ratio of the front screen needs to be slightly wider, that's literally my one complaint about it. Nice review Elijah! I personally also don't understand this camera bump thing. The phone does indeed feel a bit slimmer, however they should have used that space to FINALLY move the s pen inside the device and/or improve the battery capacity. I think these devices should have come with a huge battery in the first place, so keeping the 4400 mAh for so many generations is just plain stupid. Ideally they should have gone for something above 5000 mAh...

my fold 4 did the same thing, luckily I was able to use my carriers protection plan to get it replaced free of charge. I can only hope the hinge will get more and more resistant to wear and tear from dust over time. This is the one of the few devices where I think an extended warranty/insurance is essential.

"Why not make the phone that thick?" - in relation to camera bump I want to preface this by saying I'm an advocate for bigger batteries... on regular slab phones... to a degree. We've settled on around 7-9mm for the thickness for those. Less is silly while more is cumbersome. The latter is where we're at with foldable. It's for that reason I think the race for getting that specific category of smartphones to an acceptable thinness is a good thing. Like yeah, they should have better batteries. I'm not arguing against that but I do think getting foldable to semi-weildable state is what should take priority over making them thicker than they already are currently. Just hope they don't sacrifice MORE battery to get there.

@@lolhi1122 but it doesnt protect the camera so you need a extra thicc case that protects the camera aswell or the case itself needs a big pump where the camera is so its bad either way, if it was flat ore slightly elevated from the get go, the case could be slim and still protect camera..

@dorian6021 I was quoting the reviewer when he was upset about the camera bump, and he suggested making the phone thicker to minimise the bump and also gain battery. In theory that's sound great. However, the fold is already thick, and the race is actually to make them thinner and more appealing.

It's also already a thick-ass phone and every 1mm you add to the thickness of the phone turns into 2mm when it's folded. There's an arguable case for thickening a typical candybar phone to flatten out the camera, but doing that with a flip phone? It'd be an absolute brick lol

I had the exact same hinge issue with my Z fold 3. After a year in a half it wouldn't open fully and the internal screen and screen protector had started to crack. I have a gut feeling the hinge going bad is in no small part due to running the phone caseless and isn't expressly Samsung's fault, but I could be wrong, since more gunk and dust could creep into the mechanism over time. I've had the pixel fold for about a year, and it looks and functions like new, not even a scratch on the internal display and the hinge is still buttery smooth. I do, however, use the Dbrand Grip case on it, which entirely covers the hinge mechanism both opened and closed. I'm getting my z fold 6 tomorrow, and I'm hoping it holds up for at least a year or two.
