The fact that there are still idiots that think google cardboard and samsung VR is even remotely close to what the vive and rift experience is, tells us that a majority of the audience has never tried the vive or rift. If they have, logically speaking, they are lying. Watching a 2d video on your screen or through a phone trying hard to process rudimentary 3d images does not qualify you for knowing what a VR experience is. If you haven't tried VR yet, then you don't have a valuable opinion yet.
@dead_p1xl964
@dead_p1xl964 8 жыл бұрын
Obviously you've never tried these if you believe they're significantly different. The only thing the computers provide that the phone-based systems don't is hand tracking and full desktop graphics processing. Wouldn't be surprised if someone gets hand tracking working on the Gear VR, either. It also doesn't hurt that it's self-contained so it doesn't have to plug into a bunch of shit (no wires to get in your way) and it has a high-res pass-through camera option that the Rift has none of and the Vive has a low-res version of. You can do much better AR with the Gear VR than you ever could with the Oculus or Vive.

You don't own both do you? Currently I own a Homido, 2xCardboards, and color cross. My CV1 Rift blows them out of the water. There's no low persistence, no positional tracking, horrible framerates, and the whole experience is only on par with DK1

***** *sign*, dude, I own the htc vive, rift cv1, samsung vr with a samsung s6 active, a powis VR, and a knox v2. Not a single word you typed is true, nor logical. You really think even a Snapdragon 820 is in par??? Like I don't even think you are intoxicated or just ignorant, that's just plain stupidity. Like calling a gameboy superior to a gtx 1080. Its not even funny, that's sad that you even remotely think that. You are so far behind on being knowledgeable about tech I'm surprised to find you on a LTT video comment section, of all places. BTW, you're talking about the leap motion for hand tracking. Go ahead and look it up, take a peek at those recommend specs. LMAO. Keep dreaming though, maybe someone, one day, will slap you really hard back to reality. One can only hope.

Nobbs66 Is that a joke? Because my phone's screen has 4x the resolution of the DK1, and faster head tracking. But nice try, kid. EVOLICIOUS I own a Vive, DK2, and Gear VR. They're not that different. I can assure you that it's not easy to take the DK2 or Vive to a remote or outdoor location, or to even move 20-50 ft from your computer tower. But I wouldn't expect a die-hard fanboy who can't understand what I typed to get that. I specifically said it doesn't have desktop-grade graphics, which is all you came back with. You're a #Genius saying that a GTX 1080 has better graphics...I never realized that. Clearly I thought that my cell phone has the same graphics as the latest-gen highest-end graphics card on the market. Jackass. I also wasn't talking about the LeapMotion controller, I was talking about the Vive hand controllers and the Oculus Touch controllers. I have a badass XBox-like controller for my phone from Steelseries, but none of the current DOF camera hand-tracking solutions are well supported on Android nor do they connect easily to a mobile system. I'm going to guess you're a child who had a Google Cardboard until it got wet from your tears when you couldn't afford an actual headset VR system, because people who use them both regularly know better than to think that the CPU is a major deciding factor in VR performance. I'm just a video game developer who makes VR apps for Android and Windows, though, so what the fuck do I know right?

exclusives for a peripheral device??? fuck off facebook. it's a monitor you put on your face with track ir when it really comes down to the nitty gritty. imagine if games were exclusive to a certain monitor or only works with a logitech keyboard or a razer mouse (what oculus are trying to do amounts to the same thing at the end of the day ) people wouldn't stand for it. I wonder how facebook and oculus thought it was gonna go? OF COURSE te internets was gonna throw a shitstorm. I feel sorry for all the original backers of rift who were promised something then watched it slowly eroded away. the really sad thing is that the rift is a brilliant bit of kit but I'll have no part of it while these assholes play their corporate games. valve invented a LOT of the technology that makes even the rift work and facebook pulls a typical shitty move and tries to lock their side down. (they even poached some of valves VR programmers and technicians). scumbags will always be scumbags and as soon as Palmer Luckey sold his soul to the devil I knew I wouldn't be getting a rift. PC gamers the world over should back the company that actually cares about PC gaming, that company is valve.
@Nuvendil
@Nuvendil 8 жыл бұрын
Uh, Valve didn't invent crap. Palmer Luckey is the guy who pioneered the current era of VR and created most of the designs that are used as the starting point for Vive, PSVR, and literally every other device. And a lot of that tech came from phones he cannibalized honestly. As for Valve caring about PC gaming, if they cared THAT much they would curate their f***ing storefront and clean out some of the borderline illegal and outright shady crap on Steam.
@rhadiem
@rhadiem 8 жыл бұрын
+Nuvendil um, Oculus DK2 changed to a Vive-like screen configuration. Valve also invented the lighthouse trackers which makes not sitting or standing in one spot a reality. So while Palmer did do a lot, Valve did too.
@Nuvendil
@Nuvendil 8 жыл бұрын
rhadiem First, the motion tracking tech is just previously existing tech beefed up and repurposed so pardon me for not giving it the same weight as the foundational elements of VR necessary to be successful seated or standing. Also, since Oculus isn't planning to do room scale as a central feature I don't think we can consider them indebted to Valve for a feature they aren't even using :P Second, the HTC Vive wasn't even unveiled until 2015. Valve did demo a very early build of a headset in June of 2014 (they showed it to some select devs earlier than that), but I don't know and no one really knew the exact specs of what was in it. The Oculus Rift DK2 came out in August of 2014. So unless Valve had the Vive setup already together in June and Palmer played it and then Oculus managed to figure it out and rip it off and produce a whole bunch of headsets in the space of less than 2 months...yeah, no they didn't copy that screen change from Vive. They had been experimenting with display setups for quite some time. That was one of the things they talked about a lot in development. So no, Valve didn't invent anything for which Oculus should be indebted.
@prowlhome6157
@prowlhome6157 8 жыл бұрын
What a complete Twat you are. Valve DID NOT develop the OR tech. They are very different. The Lighthouse tech infact is a rip off of OTHER companies designs. The EXCLUSIVES are just timed exclusives. Apart from their own in house stuff which is fine. HTC WILL have Vive only exclusives. The Controllers are different have have differnt controls and methods. The oculus Touch has Hand shape recognition which the Vive controllers do NOT. VIve has other things that Cannot be replicated in OR too. So of course their will be exclusives. I am developing a OR touch app and it just plain cannot be done with the Vive. oh and mean the company that Cares about gaming that charges devlopers 30-50% to be on their site but actually limits what you can and can't do to a massive extent and also you can only play Vive games THROUGH steam - Oculus can play anything from anywhere. You don't have to buy though the oculus store at all

I lost interest in it once I heard that FACEBOOK took it over. I'll borrow something that Joel Hruska stated; If Mark Zuckerberg labored under the illusion that his company was trusted or seen, in any way, as having its finger on the future of gaming, those illusions should be shattered. Those of us who have been gaming since the 80286 was a hot ticket have generally watched the growth of Flash-based Facebook games with a mixture of skepticism and dismissal. Companies like Zynga may have gotten rich off Facebook engagement, but the kinds of games on Facebook are exactly what hardcore gamers and the Rift’s target audience don’t want. People may use Facebook, but that doesn’t automatically mean they like it. Zuckerberg has built a reputation for ignoring privacy, changing features on a whim, and relentlessly searching for more aspects of users’ lives that he can crunch into. There is no way Facebook’s entry into this space would be taken as anything but a cynical attempt to grab more user data, because that’s the reputation Facebook has built for *itself*. Meanwhile, Zuck’s utterly tone-deaf monologue about buying Oculus Rift because it was the future of social networking couldn’t have sounded worse to people who bought into Rift because it was the future of gaming. *“Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever,” Zuckerberg said, “and change the way we work, play and communicate.”* Newsflash, Zucky. Nobody bought a Rift because they want to be part of your social network. Nobody. And so, when you decide to hype your purchase by talking about features that literally nobody wants or paid for, it’s not surprising that people get a little cranky about the whole thing. The solution to this is to reaffirm your fundamental commitment to the original mission the Oculus Rift set out to achieve, talk about your plans for getting that project off the ground, emphasize that no, you won’t be using the Rift to tie people to Facebook, push Facebook, integrate Facebook, or attempting, in any way, to make anyone use Facebook.

"Newsflash, Zucky. Nobody bought a Rift because they want to be part of your social network. Nobody. And so, when you decide to hype your purchase by talking about features that literally nobody wants or paid for, it’s not surprising that people get a little cranky about the whole thing." "Nobody." "Literally." = Generalizations Nobody you personally know or care to empathize with wants Facebook in VR. Gaming enthusiasts, myself included, sure enough do not care about Facebook integrations in their games (and will likely avoid them). But it's short-sighted and childishly possessive of VR gamers not to realize that the destiny of the HMD is to become a universal platform. Communication, social networking, web browsing, shopping, education, industry... This tech costs 600-800 dollars right now, sans PC, and pretty much only gamers will be willing to spend that much for a display that's fascinating but still so very flawed (resolution needs to double or triple ASAP. A very huge challenge! Sales of these early headsets fund that R&D for future versions.) I own a Rift and would be hard-pressed to find the mark of Facebook, or even one mention of the service outside of the 360 videos app at this time. But on the day Facebook becomes a metaverse-style app in my Oculus Home library, you bet your ass I'll check it out on day one, and if it provides some kind of cool social value beyond regular Facebook, like the ability to "hang out" with the avatars of my friends and family, then not only will >I< be excited about that, but millions of regular people will sit up and take notice. Grandmas everywhere will start getting Rifts from their adult children so they can share a virtual world and play simple games with their grandchildren! If that sound like a nightmare scenario to you, then simply remember, the world isn't all about you, and things that don't cater exclusively to your interests or preferences, are nonetheless okay. Even great.

I work in the IT department of a company that makes medical equipment and we have been experimenting with VR since the Rift DK2 and have 3 consumer Rifts and Vive's in the department. Under the excuse of "getting a better understanding of the devices" I've had two weeks of Rift followed by two weeks of Vive during my vacation time and had great experiences with both. The Rift headset is provides the better visual and audio experience with sharper image quality and readability when it comes to text and the build in headphones are surpisingly good and provides good spacial awareness in VR. But what it really sets the Rift apart is the comfort when wearing it for extended period of time. The Vive right now provides a completely different experience with roomscale which adds so much to the experience. But this is only a selling point if you actually have the space to use it so if you live in a small apartment or you live with your parents and you're limited to your bedroom I wouldn't recommend the Vive for you. The Rift has the better headset. The Vive has room scale. Honestly if you're set on buying a VR headset I would recommend you wait at least until the Oculus Touch is out. But don't forget that there are several other VR headsets in the works by different companies such as: Star VR, Fove, Razer OSVR and VR Union Claire.

As an owner of both Vive and CV1, I can tell you that only one company is trying to treat their HMD as a platform. What Oculus is basically doing is saying "you must have this monitor and mouse to play our games." FB influence over them is blatantly obvious, and its toxic.IMO both are roughly the same quality. It really isn't about which is better, but about practices. If you want EA/Activision type online connection for single player BS, then you wont mind Oculus... However, when all your games are mired into logging into Facebook, micro-transactions, and advertising just to play, you'll see why this isn't BS. My hope is that the consumers begin revolting against these business practices of companies.

1:35 "effortless to fit onto your head" ... unless you need glasses to see. No you can't use the rift as is as it does not provide any sight correction. No, it is not easy to put on. For me the only success I've had is to take my glasses off, put them in the rift, then gingerly put the whole thing on my head. Why? 1: the front piece is too narrow for most glasses, to where it can not go straight on. You have to angle the piece to get it around a set of prescription lenses.. but this is difficult because... 2: The head harness is NOT that flexible. It does not flip easily up to bare the face piece by itself, so putting it straight onto the face, or angling it to get around your glasses when they're on, is not possible. Granted, once it's on, it's about as good as the HTC vive. But the vive wins because of the all fabric construction of the harness and that makes it my goto for VR. If I can't casually put the headpiece on, then I can't play my games casually. You can see how stiff the harness is to move at 1:40.

Agree that its not easy to wear with glasses. On first attempt, I was surprised at how easy it was. On second attempt, I realised my expectations were originally so low that it seemed easy. Wearing it with glasses is a no-go. But at least for me, I actually haven't found it too much a problem using it without my glasses. The text is blurry with or without, so no difference there and not having a sharp focus helps negate the screen door effect. Heck, having astigmatism has made me used to "god rays," in everyday life, so I barely notice them, too.Frankly, I'd recommend an Oculus more to people with crappy eyesight than those with 20/20 vision!.

I was pretty sure that they did give it like a week or two ago. They disabled the check to see what games are working on what system, so the guy who made the emulator of the rift for the vive can now make sure that people BOUGHT the games, but doesn't have to make sure that they're on the rift. How they worded it in the press release made it sound like it wasn't what they were doing, but it was. As long as you have the emulator, which is free, you can play all your rift games on Vive now.

>Without some form of hand presence, even something rudimentary, the Rift feels incomplete. This is completely untrue. There will always be a step further you can go to immerse yourself, like for instance full-body tracking. I'm sure once you've tried VR with tracking of the entire body, VR with only hand controllers will seem really basic. But the thing is, the ONLY thing required to achieve the so-called "presence" is 3D goggles and head tracking. The OR DK1 already PROVED THIS to us. There is absolutely nothing wrong with VR with a controller or VR with KB/M when it comes to immersion. (People who get seasick getting motion sickness are another issue entirely.)

VR is completely uninteresting to me until we get some good, multi-directional movement. Having to teleport around everywhere for Vive games just doesn't look like fun to me. This comment doesn't make any sense. "Oculus over Vive, since you're not so limited in control." Vive has room-scale. Reality is literally the opposite of what you said. Neither HMD has more locomotion methods than the other. There are a lot more locomotion methods than just teleporting, and teleporting isn't any better on the Oculus. Go look up more locomotion methods on KZbin, there are more than just teleporting.

yes because being only able to use keyboard and mouse and a controler at the moment on the rift, means you are less limited in your control, vs Vive which also has keyboard/mouse, controller and ....roomscale motion tracked control which which basically means vive has more control option. So to you this means the vive is more limited in its control. Since when is having more choices means limited and having less choice = not limited. The logic some people come up with. It's the same mentaility/logic that console gamers say fps game are better with controlers vs mouse and keyboard because its harder and limited.

"high price point of VIVE" .. it has the sensors, the headset and controllers everything you need all in one .. 800$ Oculus is almost as much 600$.. you add the eventual controllers , which i'm sure will cost 100$ or more. and then we have the sensors. so they are both the same price, just the vive comes with more hardware. which obviously will cost more.

isn't kinect like 100 $ ? and nobody wants it. so 2 motion sensor cameras that a lot of people would be buying can be 100$ or more right ? and controllers why not ? xbox elite controller is 150$. so they theoretically could charge enough to be relatively the same price as a vive. the thing i was pointing out is that YES the vive costs more, BUT it comes with a lot more sutff out of the box, its a full experience, and currently the best VR has to offer.
@PowerSenpai
@PowerSenpai 8 жыл бұрын
Attila Kos You are only getting one camera in that package, and your not getting a super stupid customisable "elite" controller. I think it would be ridiculous for it then to cost that much, but you are right in that it is not impossible at least, though i believe the Rift wants to sell itself on at least being somewhat cheaper since the Vive is outselling them. There are just too many unknowns to really compare these two headsets as is, and the release of touch will change that. But as of right now, the Vive is the complete package. However, i would rather wait and see how both compare at full form, than to impatiently decide what to buy here and now.
@Conman123Official
@Conman123Official 8 жыл бұрын
+Attila Kos The Oculus only currently comes with the Xbox One controller *because* the oculus touch controllers aren't finished yet. When they are finished (second half of this year according to their website) they will ship default with just the touch controllers and both sensors, so it will not have the cost of the Xbox one controller. So even with the extra cost of maybe $150 *tops* for the touch controllers and extra sensor, making it about $750 maximum, you can take off the cost of about $50 for the controllers meaning that the maximum likely price will still be $100 cheaper than the Vive.

As far as the rift Controllers The problem is the Tracking cameras have to be tethered through Usb to your computer which will be so inconvenient imagine 10 feet wires all over your living room. The beauty of the Vive is the tracking cameras are just plugged into a outlet you have more options of cable management that way. I have my wires hidden behind my window curtains to the outlet. The sensors in the Vive headset which do the communicating to your PC are a sneaky huge Tech advantage over the rift. This is why the Vive headset is not as comfortable.

HTC, Valve and Facebook have all said they did not expect VR to be in every household. But just gaming in the early 80's that was a niche in the arcades mostly, it eventually became cheaper and better. To be honest though, I love my Vive and my friends and family who have used it love it. Especially my dad who used to love travelling but now cannot absolutely adores being able to see the world in Google Earth VR. Sure it's not perfect, but VR has offered me experiences that I have not had from any other technology. Even if VR was to fail now, I am still happy with my headset.

At this point, I still want to see the price point of a Rift that would ship with the touch controllers before I call it an investment. If for example, Oculus decides to keep bundling games an an XBOX controller with the Rift, noticeably bringing the price up, to then add up the price of the touch controllers, well.. That would not be my investment. Price is already way higher than it was meant to be, with newer games requiring a really beefy card, which may or may not require a new PSU/motherboard, depending on whether or not the CPU also needs to change, well.. Price goes up really quickly. Still, if ever exclusivity with apps and stuff like that happens, well.. I'm hoping Oculus will enjoy jailbreakers

Well, the most obvious games suited for the current VR tech are racing and flight/space sims. They don't require much extra for almost complete immersion other than a gaming wheel or flight stick/throttle + pedal. Then again for those you can just use TrackIR instead.. heck you can probably get three 19" or 20" monitors AND TrackIR and it'll still be cheaper than the current VR headsets. Mostly I'd just want VR for RPG, Adventure, or Survival type games. Maybe some sandbox games like GTA too, but so far these motion controls looks fairly clunky ATM, and reminds me too much of the Wii LOL.

You mentioned that you had the opportunity to try the "new version" of the Vive at CES. As this video is now 6 months old, are you actually referring to the Vive that is currently available to consumers at the time of this writing, or is there another version on its way? The SDE difference is the one thing that's holding me back from jumping on the Vive, so just wanted to make sure there wasn't another version round the corner... Thanks for the video! :)

Lucasif The Odd that's not how money works. like at all. Housing costs is a recurring monthly cost that requires consistent income to afford, the Vive is a one-time cost that you can save up for over the course of months. Also, housing costs vary dramatically while the vive costs the same pretty much everywhere in the US at least. Meaning someone living in, say, San Fransisco can very easily be able to afford a vive but not the living space to use it.

The controllers will be the determining factor. The Oculus Touch controllers should be coming out around the holidays in a few months, with around 30 games made for them. And IF they turn out better than the Vive's tech-demo library, I don't think it will be long before we start seeing most youtubers trying Rift games. Touch has a few advantages over the Vive's controllers, and could even be considered a more advanced VR input device. Not only are they smaller, lighter, more comfortable to hold, and have physical joysticks, they also sense if your fingers are on, near, or off buttons, so it can track your fingers for gesture-based inputs. The design of the controllers keep your hands holding them in a way so that everyone holds them the same way, which makes it easier for developers to line the virtual hands up with your real hands. Hand-presence will be significantly better on Touch. And we're already seeing plenty of developers setting up their Oculus + Touch systems for room-scale games. Oculus may make a lot of stupid mistakes, but you can't argue that their hardware quality is top notch, and they put a ton of R&D effort into comfort and good VR design. A lot of thought has gone into making Touch an amazing controller. And I want the controller that goes the furthest into VR, and I don't mind waiting a few more months.

Honestly, I'm just worried that so many people are waiting for version 2 that one won't exist. The wireless thing doesn't make sense though, unless you're talking about one of those VR backpacks introduced at E3. There's just no way to reliably stream processing power without there being input lag, which would be DEVASTATING to a VR game.

Vensey Ness Augmented reality is capable of virtual reality. It's just perspective.....AR is an overlay.....overlay the entire screen and it's VR.
@VenseyNess
@VenseyNess 8 жыл бұрын
C North Unless there's a serious upgrade from the devkit, there's two problems with that. The first is that the hololens relies on a backdrop to make things pop out, I don't think that the see-through screen will be able to give the opaqueness to not allow some of the outside world to break through, ruining immersion. The second is that, again, unless there's serious changes from the devkit, and I don't think there will be in this regard, the hololens can only process a relatively small box directly in front of it, and not the full screen. Until such a time as those change, no, the hololens can't do VR. I'm not saying that the hololens isn't cool, but I'm saying that at its price, it'll be a good buy for businesses, so professionals can mess with their stuff in 3d and that kind of stuff, and not for consumers.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 8 жыл бұрын
Vensey Ness You're trying to come up with reasons just to be contrarian. The Hololens doesn't require a backdrop. The objects are overlayed, they aren't transparent, so logic would dictate no backdrop is required. After all, they show a TV app that allows you to put a virtual TV screen on a wall....if that were transparent to where you could see stuff behind it, it would be useless. They can very well make the Hololens take up the entire field of view of the user, and they're probably going to have to at final release. Currently, Hololens works with onboard processing, but it can work with offboard processing, like with a GPU in a PC.....so the view size can easily change, there's nothing really limiting about creating a larger viewing area other than processing power.

I can only speak from what I have experienced. So far I really like MY Oculus. I'm looking forward to the touch controller that will enhance immersion. A lot of the hate I'm seeing seems to come from people who don't even own a rift. As for exclusive content. Since when is that a new thing? MS, Sony, And Nintendo have done it for decades. In the end, I'm curious to see the update to this video once the touch comes out. Will it then make Oculus worthwhile (to this reviewer)? I guess time will tell. Until then, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Pretty happy with my Rift for use with racing games, which is what I bought it for. I still get a little uneasy playing flight games but they are awesome looking, and I hope I get my VR legs soon. Really appreciate the comfort of the Rift. That the Vive is supposedly a bit heavier and less comfortable would be enough to keep me from wanting one for my uses. Even as comfortable as the Rift is, it still is very noticeable after long (hours) play sessions. I also like the increased sweet spot of the Rift, which I hear the Vive has a slightly smaller one. Though the Vive reportedly has a brighter display so there are trade offs.

I'm unaware of the controversy surrounding the Rift. But is it really just because they have a bunch of exclusive games? Really? And it sounds like all they did was give the game developers extra money to program the games for their console first. Why is that so controversial?

TheDudeofDudes The Rift having exclusive games is no different than Xbox or PS4 having exclusive games. The Rift is a toy. It's not a basic viewing device like a TV. Maybe in the future VR will be as common and practical as a TV, but that's not at all the case now. I don't see the problem with Rift having exclusive games. Every game-playing device to ever exist has had exclusive games. The Rift is much closer to a console like the PS4 than a TV. The games have to be programmed specifically for the Rift. TVs can play any basic media. And again, it sounds like all they did was give developers extra money so they could program their games for the Rift before it was released onto other VR sets. So many of these games will not be exclusive to the Rift for long. Sony making a PS4 only playable on a Sony TV is much different. A TV is a basic commodity, and you expect a gaming console to be able to work with any TV. Sony also has a dedicated following of people who play their games and expect to be able to continue to do so. Forcing their customers to buy a Sony TV would be pulling the rug out from underneath them. The rift is brand new and is currently used as a toy. It's not the same situation.

The problem wasn't that games were exclusive to a platform aka the Oculus store, but that they were exclusive to only the Rift headset. Both the Rift and Vive are just monitors with motion sensors, so when you prevent people from playing games because they bought a different monitor, it becomes an issue. Luckily, last month, Oculus removed the DRM that caused this, so you can now play Oculus store games with a Vive headset.

+Fine Wine Daily rift and vive are displays with a custom controller input. It's not it's own platform. You're not running it on separate hardware, you need a computer with windows and steam or oculus home(blech) Not sure how people can legitimately put themselves behind the sentiment that it's 'like a ps4.' The only limitations causing the true exclusives (vive is the only one with exclusives, and by no fault of its own) is the controller mismatch. Vive has room scale. Rift doesn't. Simple. You're still playing the same games on the same machine. It's idiotic to compare this to console differences. That's like saying the Og Xbox one and slim are as different as a ps4 and Xbox merely because the slim doesn't have a Kinect port. The slim can have a Kinect adapter, and the rift can add touch controllers.

But Rift is sharper over all instead of Vives "sweet spot" in centre of vision.

I think it's fair to say the Vive has a temporary advantage, because it's controllers don't have the same fidelity as Touch. Oculus could have put out similar controllers with ease, but they wanted to step it up with full palm detection, which is far more complex to achieve, but once achieved, it's a whole new experience. Then what? Vive will become obsolete until next gen of VR. To add to that, no built-in headphones (which are superb) and it's heavier. If Oculus were not to release Touch by the end of this year, I'd stay clear of them.

See for me, I'm huge fan of simulators and games that provide immersion. Games and programs like FSX, Fallout 4, etc. The Rift was something that I had my heart set on getting because it was really the only PC-based VR headset I knew of at the time, and I assumed the retail version would be around $300 like the DK2. My computer had a 980TI so hardware wasn't a problem for me so when the consumer version was announced, I quickly lost interest. While I understand that VR is a luxury and not everyone can afford it, the jump from $300 to $600 still surprises me to this day. This really made accessibility to VR harder for the general public. I know that Samsung has Gear and there's also Google Cardboard, but the hardware is limited to your smartphone, not your PC. When I demoed the Vive this week, I was totally blown away at what VR has to offer. Even though I never got to test the Rift, the mechanics are the same, despite one huge caveat: The Rift does not support 3D space. This is huge because for games that require motion beyond head movement, motion sickness will become a factor. If your body begins to sense motion and you're not physically moving, you're gonna get really sick. For the small 15ft "box" that the Vive puts you in, that's surprisingly a nice comfortable area to play around in without feeling cramped or stuck. Also, the controllers for the Vive are absolutely fantastic. You can get a sense for where everything is in 3D space, even though you can't physically see your hands. It's intuitive and fun!
