i'm really not trying to defend that abomination, but i can guarantee you it is really easy to reach 200$ building a keyboard and that probably 3/4 of the cost are case and keycaps considering the strange shapes. Azio's keycaps and case are good looking but they went for more standard shapes and considering you can find cheap double-shot rounded keycaps on ebay, it means the mold existed already which cut a lot of the costs. That said i think these type of keyboard are only good if you have a working environment where they can help you build a certain type of mood for your customers (like an escape room, or a vintage style hotel)

A common theme amongst crowdfunding projects is that once the idea becomes popular, someone quickly counterfeits it and begins producing and selling the product for far cheaper before the original entrepreneur could even get the idea off the ground. It would probably actually be ridiculously economically efficient for most Kickstarter projects to simply come up with an idea, pay for marketing, wait for China to begin making counterfeits, and then buy the Chinese counterfeits and resell them as their own, with no intention of ever producing their own model, essentially cutting out the entire design process and jumping straight from conceptual idea to finished product for very little sunk cost
@rainmaker62176 жыл бұрын
Just a quick comment on the AZIO keyboards. They all use a natural backing, so it's not fake leather it's real leather (which means it should also be treated as such when cleaning it) and the wood is also a real wood veneer. The metal rings around the border of the keayboard is plated in either nickel or copper depending on the model. It's honestly a really high quality board, but the key shape takes a bit getting used to when you come from a regular board (the quality is on par or higher for the most part though). Not a bad way to go for a keyboard if you really want something that performs well while still giving a certain look, and they can be had without wireless functionality as well for a significant price reduction.
@rlatmddjs6 жыл бұрын
well why do you think most wallets use leather instead of something else? because it looks cool? ever heard of washing your wallet because of your oils and shit? no your oil and shit might effect on it but it's not going to ruin it. also why does real wood get effected by your oil you can just wipe it off if you want to. wood and leather is one of the most clever way to make a product feel more premium while retaining durability if they use real ones.
@rainmaker62176 жыл бұрын
As mentioned the leather adds to the quality feel, if all you wanted was practicality you wouldn’t buy a “premium” keyboard to start with but rather stick with whatever 5$ keyboard all OEM computers come with. As for ease of use on this specific keyboard, it’s a lot easier to keep clean than my G710+. Cleaning leather isn’t all that difficult, but you can’t use any sort of harsh cleaning agent on it so it’s just good to keep that in mind. As for why you would ever choose real leather or wood over plastic it’s really the same reason why leather shoes, wallets and even wooden furniture is still popular, it gives a different feel than what plastic does. Practicality has nothing to do with it.

@SianaGearz6 жыл бұрын
If i'm not mistaken, you're not allowed to rebrand existing products on Kickstarter and Indiegogo any longer. There's a possibility that the campaign ran before this was a common scheme and the platforms changed terms due to backlash. I wonder though, is it the case that it's an existing product? I mean it could be a joint venture. Get the project rolling off the ground with crowdfunding money, make custom tooling and build a production pipeline with that with a partner in China, and THEN sell the product under multiple brands (each with some kind of region limitation) with different pricing? Which would be completely fine actually. I mean normally whenever someone rebrands a product that already exists during the campaign, someone just looks on Baidu and Taobao, and then there's a big outcry.

Interest in antique typewriters has been skyrocketing lately (along with the prices) which is probably a big part of the reason these things are cropping up all over the place now (it's what brought me here). The Rymek keyboard seems to be a cheaper knockoff of the Qwerkywriter, which raised a bunch of money on kickstarter back in 2014. Much like the Rymek, the Qwerkywriter also has a replica paper tray (that's what that flimsy aluminum "something" is supposed to be) and a replica return lever (the other "more different aluminum something"), with the added bonus that they actually work. The paper tray will support the weight of a phone/tablet, and the return lever actually functions as an enter key would. Fans of typewriters will recognize the keycaps that the Rymek is sporting as being inspired by the Royal Quiet Deluxe, which introduced Dreyfuss keys (designed by Henry Dreyfuss), or as they are more commonly called tombstone keys (because they look like little tombstones). But, for some reason, Rymek put them upside down... Being someone who is interested in both typewriters and mechanical keyboards myself, I am dying for a good tombstone key keycap set, and it blows my mind that Rymek would make a product so off base that it could actually be disappointing to both keyboard enthusiasts and typewriter enthusiasts.

definitely not me, I went through building my own board to something more ergonomic, but way cheaper. But about the wobbble, I must say I have printed several versions of keycap to get it right. While the version I am using now may not be perfect, the part that clips onto the MX Stem fits just right, I still have wobble, but looking at it, the wobble comes from the switch itself. My point is, at least with MX switches, you will have wobble no matter what.

I guess that the metal bar was assembled with the wrong orientation. The reason manufacturers still uses microUSB Type-B and the like is because they buy it in large bulks to save money and it allows newer products to share components with older products, simplifying the logistics and manufaction process of the new product. It makes little sense to stock up Type-C when you have a lot or older products using Type-B still being manufactored, and why make changes when it does little to no improvements of the product; A keyboard doesn't need Type-C's bandwidth of 10Gbps for example. microUSB Type-B also have broader compatibility, broadening the potential market and therefore profit.
@57thorns6 жыл бұрын
Another reason is that the profit margins are slim, and a penny saved is quite literally a penny earned- The total production cost of a $80 (retail) keyboard is less than $10. So those 15 cents are 1-2% of the total production cost.

Harold M I remember the day Ellipse first made his Model F thread over on Deskthority. No one could quite believe that it was happening, since the more conventional tenkeyless and 60% layout Model F boards were extremely rare at the time. The were others you could get, of course (I personally loved the giant, "space-unsaver" board which seemed like a battleship with all the macro keys up top), but they all had strange layouts due to their age. Honestly though, I never liked the switch quite as much as the membrane buckling springs in the Model M. They felt heavier and more resistant to me than the Model F keys, that just gave way way with a little force. Its a weird taste, but hey, I can't change what I like. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@abubakrakram62086 жыл бұрын
Harold M I’m sure you’ll love it too. I’m in the extreme minority to prefer the M. As for a quiet board, you likely have to add o-rings or dampeners to get it closer to silent. I personally just use a linear Cherry Red board (old, non-RGB era K95) as my gaming/quiet board. It works out well.

This single video and the videos on "alternative keyboards" that led me to this inspired a ton of research that eventually led me into getting the *Azio Retro Classic Artisan* for myself as my first mechanical keyboard, complete with leather-finished (it is in fact genuine chrome-tanned top-grain leather with grains that give if you poke them with your fingernails) mouse and wrist rest (mousepad was sold out), plus a _ton_ of switch testers to get an idea of what I was missing out on. Adjusting to the circular keycaps was almost "immediate" for me and about just as I expected, "hugging" my fingertips as I type, whereby I can easily reach 100 WPM; my previous Tt eSPORTs "Commander" was also already of a flat profile, so there was no transition in that regard. I also absolutely love its unique sound with the Kailh Typelit switches as acoustically coupled with the keycaps, stainless steel "middle plate" and the plastic, leather-topped top plate; I find recordings of brass top plates to be too bright instead of deep and resonant. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWm4g5mugd96gck has to be my favourite recording of its sound alongside soundcloud.com/vsg-3/azio-retro-classic-bt-with-azio-typelit-switches, though you may actually mainly be hearing a _ton_ of backspace use in the latter, or the person was _very_ lucky to have such a consistent-sounding board, but it can also be interesting to have each key exhibit its own "personality". The Kailh Typelit's click jackets have a very pleasant "tchk" sound which I prefer over a more prominent or brighter _click_ like with your usual Blue switch mind Kailh BOXes. The key weight _is_ a bit heavier than your usual clicky, but I find this to be rather satisfying and no problem for me with my being an amateur pianist. I also find their click jackets to have a slightly more _pleasantly_ scratchy and tactile feel, making for a satisfying typing experience. Keycap wobble is also acceptable. My only gripe other than with sound inconsistency is with the 'I' key on my board starting off heavier or with more friction and the right shift key's (I so happen to exclusively use it for capitalization and am a home row QWERTY touch typist) stabilizer having high friction on the left side, though it's barely noticeable during normal typing. The last thing to be concerned of is that the backlit keycaps are not double shot and are non-Cherry, so for a keyboard of this price, you may want to seek a solution like liquid glass to protect the keycap legends from wearing away, unless you are fine with reaching that point and ordering replacement keycaps from Azio.
@DaanBrandt6 жыл бұрын
True typewriter like keyboards should have a push distance of several centimeters between 2,5 and 3,0 cm is would say. And yes they should cost some effort to push. The typewriter keys were very tough because you need the energy to slam a piece of metal in a curve onto inky tape that leaves the ink on the sheet.

I bought the "cheap" version of the Azio keyboard a week ago to use in my daily work as a full-time transcriptionist. I was replacing a Das Keyboard that lasted me about four years of full-time work before the E key failed. Looking at my work stats for that period, that E key was subjected to well over the 5 million key strokes it was rated for. But the new Das Keyboard was something like $250 here in Mexico when I could have the cheap Azio for about $75 here (cheaper than in the US!). I am enamoured with it. Sure, it looks good and has a super solid build, but I'm more focused on performance. I usually have a learning curve for a new keyboard, but this one felt right immediately and made me realise just how long my E key on the Das Keyboard had been sticking! The Azio is clicky, but not insanely loud, and it just feels good. Best way I can describe it is that the keys are exactly where they need to be and have to be pressed exactly as much as muscle memory says is needed. This version is Windows-only, but I was able to remap the Windows and Alt keys to Option and Command respectively, and the most critical hot keys (volume control) work for me under Catalina even if the others don't do anything. Really glad I gave this keyboard a chance.
