It was definitely the power connector. You shorted all 4 power pins together, because they're not at all isolated from the water
@klosskopfder1.7628 жыл бұрын
Jacob eMatt I don't think so. The Powersuply shoud be strong enough to handle that. I think it was the Signal, wich is very easy to influence, especialy with such a high data transmission
@Karavusk8 жыл бұрын
klosskopf der1. What? If it is shorted the power will never reach the HDD no matter if you have a 30$ PSU or an nuclear reactor plugged into it
@gutsngorrrr8 жыл бұрын
Jacob eMatt I agree, even before he started adding more water, I knew it was going to fail, because the connectors would all need to be connected and then conformally coated to seal them and that includes the motor connections, as the water will still get in to the connections where he sanded them.
@FoodOnCrack8 жыл бұрын
i don't think that you know how electricity works. if you are shorting the power connector the solution simply isnt a stronger power supply. Nothing can handle a short circuit, it can only shut down the power to it to prevent damage.

@mikkethemightey37227 жыл бұрын
Water would indeed move heat from the heatsink, but it would propably not radiate out of the water too well, since a bucket or a small fishtank is gonna have a lot less surface area than a decent heatsink. Or so I presume, based on that the oil-submersed computer required aircooled rads to pump the oil through, and temps weren't anything particularly good

It wasn't very bright to submerge the SATA port and power connector, they are not water-tight. If they were watertight from the spray, the drive wouldn't boot up at all. The fact that the harddrive works before submerging completly, means the SATA and power connector aren't watertight. You risk not only destroying the harddrive, but the motherboard, power supply, and every other component which are connected to the motherboard, becase you submerged the SATA and power connectors.

What you should try next time is siliconing everything in. Like, fish tank silicone. Put it together, plug it in to the power leads, then silicone everything up to the cables, that way no water can possibly get in, and all the contacts are still touching. :] That's a method people use frequently on LEDs, especially in fish tanks, to prevent them from getting water in them and shorting out.

Here is one practical application for a helium filled hard drive: high altitude data storage. High altitude what? Yup, as low as 3k m above the sea level air-filled hard drives may stop working; worse yet, they may get permanently damaged due to thin air; the hard drive heads plowing hard through the magnetic HDD surface due to the lack of the expected "air cushion". I've damaged a bunch of HDDs used for photo/vid footage backup during my treks in Nepal. Pricey SSDs were the only option, back then. This technology seems to be a viable alternative now too.

I used to do this line of work. Yes the spray is extremely toxic and can cause more than 8 different types of cancers. I've read the MDS. I would first blow all dust off the PCB after removing from the HDD. Then tape all connectors with masking tape. Spray the conformal coating with 2 coats, waiting 4-8 hours to dry in between in a dust free well ventilated room like a bathroom with the fan on. Remove the masking tape and reassemble with all connectors in. Have some conformal coating in a bottle/container and pour it in between the electronic film and PCB till it covers the HDD motor connector. Then finally In order to make the HDD completely submersible in water you must have the connector plugged in when spraying liberally your final coat on the SATA and power cables. Then let it dry for 24 hours. To check if you have evenly coated the PCB, use a UV light or lamp to check.

@Linus, To avoid any short circuit please spray on the plugs before submerging the device under water. Also, avoid spraying on the metallic connectors just spray on the device after its plugged in basically. Hope you try this out again. Thanks,

water proof desktop pc?
@christianedwards34488 жыл бұрын
Well, it could have a use if you somehow spill water in the case and it could have some water resistance. Or for water cooling leaks.
@Bigolg19757 жыл бұрын
It helps to mask off areas you don't want conformal coated. Either tape or latex making would work great.
So this is "waterproof", not waterproof am i right?

@oldsk0ol8 жыл бұрын
It's a very interesting idea, Linus, however, you need to hermetically seal the HD while it is connected to the SATA/power connector in order to make it 'waterproof'. Meaning, you'll need at least a dedicated cable that you would use to spray that gunky stuff on.
@AhmetMurati8 жыл бұрын
I would put something over the contacts like post-it notes or and cello tape so no coater would cover the ports, and after attaching power cable and data cable then I would add either hot glue or coater

dielectric grease could be used to insulate the connectors from the water. i use it all the time in electrical connectors that are constantly subjected to water.
@drewlarson658 жыл бұрын
Perhaps masking the points of contact with tape before you spray may work better than sandpaper. Seems the coating caused you more issues than the water. Gaskets wouldn't hurt either.

Linus could you do a build which every component is made waterproof or cased up, and it's all connected up in the water, and the water is cooled, making it all cooled. It could be in a fishtank!
@ChrisLesmerises8 жыл бұрын
DC Current over water causes really fast flashing and tracking. You need to load those connections with dielectric grease.
