Watching Riley fail so hard at picking PC components is like watching a car slowly rolling over a cliff with the driver still inside, who can't work out where the breaks and reverse is.
@pandemicneetbux21102 жыл бұрын
Honestly like guy above you said, it's these videos that are much better for intro to PC beginners and something which always annoyed me about Linus compared to the other guys like GN and jayz, because it's pretty much high end stuff for people that know what they're doing, whereas for you it may not even occur to you not to mix and match DDR3 and DDR4 or to not try and dig out your old PSU to VGA cable from a different brand and try to get it to fit or even to check for non-ECC RAM or what that even is while you're shopping, which is often preferable to going to Best Buy (or God help you, Walmart) anyway. This is why I always hated the "it's like Legos" bullshit, because no it is fucking not. Legos does not start a house fire and ruin thousands of dollars worth of equipment when I plug what looks like the right male to right female connector, only to find out I put wrong thing to wrong PSU (didn't personally yet, but still). Just read story of a poor guy that ruined his new CPU *and* old PC by slamming it in wrong as 14 yo. It's neither too complicated nor simple, and I adamantly agree it's much more useful to watch guys fail and find out *why* what they're doing is wrong so you learn what not to do and how to ask the right questions.

It was not just about being HP memory, by that time DDR3 was different for AMD and Ïntel. AMD was more lenient with memory chip designs, while Intel was much more strict, meaning that AMD accepted all kinds of DDR3 while Intel did not.

15:40 That's basically what I'm doing right now. I was going to build my own gaming PC but got overwhelmed when researching it (I've never built a PC). I was also very scared of accidentally breaking expensive parts. So, I bought a custom PC instead. My plan is to upgrade it gradually as the components become obsolete, one part at a time. Theoretically, that should allow me to learn how to build a computer in bitesize chunks so eventually, I'll be pretty proficient in it all. Already having a functional, well built PC should also be useful as I will have a point of reference which I previously didn't (I didn't have a desktop at the time, just an old laptop). That's the theory, anyway. I hope it works then I can build a computer from scratch one day when this one is no longer usable or upgradeable.

I spent exactly 568 dollars on my first gaming PC. A family member now owns it and uses it daily, and I built it in 2015. I think she even uses it to edit with Premiere Pro. Despite the PSU being out of warranty, none of the parts have shown bad signs of aging.

On a whim, I picked up some oddball graphics cards with that DMS-59 connector at a university surplus shop for the princely sum of $1 each. Context - I had a bunch of old Windows XP computers I was building for an old school LAN party and was suffering through the ignominy of playing Unreal Tournament with onboard graphics cards of that era. I was pleasantly surprised to find out I had picked up a bunch of Radeon 4550’s and 6350’s for $1 each. Now those old games run maxed out at 60 frames per second.
