First computer I ever bought was from the pre-built company Lyte Technology. Boy, it was an absolute mess. They advertised new components and everything shipped with obvious wear and tear. Components started going out left and right and I eventually built my own PC. They tried to pacify me at one point by shipping me a 1060 as a consolatory "gift" for all the issues I was having with the PC. The card came to me covered in corrosion with bent fins, looked like it had been left in a water bucket over night. I would really love to see LTT do a review on a pre-built from Lyte Tech.

When I was first "getting serious" about PC gaming we had an already few years old HP Pavilion Desktop. I ended up upgrading pretty much the whole thing, starting with the PSU and putting in a GPU. By the time I finally decided enough was enough and got the money to replace it with a custom built pc it was 10 years old. It was never an amazing PC but it served me well. I definitely will never miss building in that tiny case though.

I got a prebuilt in ~2014 for like $500. It had an i5 4460, 8GB of RAM, 256GB Sata SSD. I slapped a 960 in it and eventually 16GB of RAM and it did great for 5 and a half years. My biggest regret was that the LGA1150 socket basically capped my CPU at exactly what I had so when it came time to upgrade it was a mobo and CPU upgrade. Which basically turned into a whole new PC. It still runs to this day as my mom's Facebook games PC.
@robertt93423 жыл бұрын
When my parents were looking for a computer several years ago they were wanting a prebuilt and I suggested one for them. With their budget it wasn’t a bad path. Honestly the prebuilt was the better deal by couple hundred dollars, I just couldn’t get close at the time with DIY. My concern was how long the parts would last. It last a little over 6 years, but the specs and their use case could have gone 10 before needing to upgrade because of obsolescence. However when they were looking for a new system this year as their motherboard died, I convinced them to go the DIY route. At the same price point I was able to get better motherboard, power supply and more ram than a OEM prebuilt. My mother even had a lot of fun building the system.

I would never get my mother any kind of computer, let alone a DIY build. My mother has literally the worst track record of anyone I've ever met when it comes to computers. For Christmas of 2007 my parents decided to buy computers for my sister, my dad, and I. The PC _I_ got had issues out of the box and had to return it (which happened again with the second PC, go figure). My sister eventually left the house, leaving her PC behind, which I ultimately got and it still works to this day, I just don't use it anymore since it's a piece of crap now, since then I've gone through 3 laptops. My dad's PC lasted over ten years before giving up the ghost, dying due to too much dust, because my dad's lazy. My mother? I believe she's gone through 5 desktops in that same amount of time.

Sadly, these days it seems to be that as soon as the word gets out that something is good value for money, either the price doubles or parts gets swapped to make it as bad as the competition. I would explain it if it were a different industry, perhaps saddled with debt after Covid and in need to recoup losses as quickly as possible, but the tech industry has done just fine until now??? Is it ballooned shipping costs? They need money to hoard chips? Is it just a once-in-a-lifetime occasion to get really greedy (but then why does EVERYONE do it instead of pursuing the clearly nicer business opportunity)?
@tzuyd3 жыл бұрын
It's not always down to nebulous business practice, either (though in this case you'd think ASUS have a pretty steady supply). Smaller/independent prebuilders such as the computer store I work for might not always have the bank balance or warehouse to be able to buy mountains of stock at any given point - it's extremely common for us to substitute something like 2 sticks of RAM for 1 stick if that's what we actually have in stock at the time of the build. We've been waiting a week for a delivery of 32GB sticks that were to go in machines that were supposed to be shipped to the customers last week (these particular machines need 4 32GB sticks each - we got in four sticks last week but one of them was DOA so now we had to wait for another four sticks because we couldn't source any more of the same brand). Things are just really touch and go in the supply chain these days.

I finally bought a gaming pc in February this year. I’d been on Apple products for a decade. I bought a prebuilt HP Omen because it had the best GPU I could get at the time and in my budget. I had major heating issues with the CPU right away and blamed the cooler and extreme lack of fans and airflow. Once I got the nerve to swap out my cooler (after watch many many hours of LTT videos), as I pulled off the stock cooler I noticed my CPU was perfectly clean…because they left the plastic cover on the cooler with preapplied thermal paste. And until that point the plastic had just been melting all over my CPU at 100 degrees C. I’ll never buy a prebuilt again and especially from HP.

As someone who works for Best Buy and sells this system almost daily, I completely agree with linus that the system is perfectly fine for gaming and the sort. I’ve had a lot of customers come in for it because they don’t want to go through the process of building it for a bunch of reasons, time, necessity ect. The pandemic, for example, put me in a spot that I couldn’t wait to build my system (mine died mid semester during an exam) so I needed something off the shelf to get me through it. I still have the system but I have upgraded it significantly (new gpu, case, ram). All in all whether you’re building or buying, every situation is different and as long as you make the proper research you are able to have a good experience with either machine.

I used to buy prebuilt PCs when I was younger. I stopped doing that when I installed a graphics card that borked the airflow inside the case to the point where the system kept shutting down do to overheating. After that incident I expressly built my own PCs to match my needs and always ensure I wasn't going to overheat the system because I decided to upgrade a component.

I bought an ABS PC from Newegg after GN's review and couldn't be happier with it so far. I got a 5900x, 3080, and 32GB of 3600MHz RAM for $3100. No cheap parts in the build either. Everything was good name brand stuff you'd actually buy if you were building a system yourself. Considering a 3080 costs around half of what I paid for the entire PC it was a great deal.
@Monkeystompn3 жыл бұрын
Back in June of this year, I bought an ABS system also. Got a 3070, 10700KF, 16gb ram, etc. It was all good OEM parts too. I paid $1699 for mine before tax. I already have a 5800x system, so I replaced the 3070 with my old 1070 and my 10 year old got a pretty sweet birthday gift this year. But point being that those ABS systems are pretty decent really. The case on the one I got was a fairly cheap Gamdias case. Which is probably the only thing I outright didn't like about it. The nvme drive was a team group cardea, which was a bit slower than I would have bought if I was picking everything myself. But considering a lot of SI's cheap out on stuff like that as we saw in this video. I thought the few points they skimped on were relatively minor, especially for the price I paid. I couldn't be happier with the system.

I got a Dell very early on for the exact reason of getting a 3090 GPU few things to note: - PSU and mother board are not only dell manufactured and very incompatible, but they are actually installed in a way that pulling them out of the case is impossible without damaging the components - The case was so small that it literally had no spare room to do any kind of modification If it wasn't so aggravating, its actually kind of impressive how compact they "Tetris" everything in - Similar issue with CPU cooling with the fan being very loud and had no room to change the fan - GPU was a "Modified" 3090 that was significantly smaller and only had 2 fans on it, performance seemed to still be in line with the non modified version - As you probably guessed by this point the GPU was unable to even come close to run at its peak due to over heat issues reaching temperature throttle almost instantly upon doing any kind of difficult activity and needed to be throttled down to 40% TDP just to keep its temp in the 90's I ended up having to buy parts and build my own PC from scratch and scrap everything except the GPU, and that's how I spent $4000 on a RTX 3090 lol

I also found that an Alienware Aurora R10 with a liquid cooler and an RTX 3070 was 1800 dollars at microcenter. Guess which one I bought? No idea how truly junky the Alienware is - it seems the most major problem it might have is that I should repaste the CPU as they use a Deen of paste at the factory. Otherwise... it games! I just bought a prebuilt over two weeks ago, and yeah, you really do get what you pay for on a prebuilt. The main reason I went for my current PC is because of the upgrade path. These days there are some good pre builts around, but with all things that are comfortable, you have to search a lot. I bought a pre built last in November ( Black Friday ) and im pretty happy with it. Some tweaks here and there in UEFI and Afterburner and that´s that. Usually this works best when you have control over each component, so i think it was kind of a pre built. On the other way I agree with you. Pre Builts where you have no power of change are kind of bad 99 % of the time. Maybe worth a try if you search for plain office desktops.

I snagged the more powerful version of this setup a month ago from Best Buy for $1,400 US (current regular price of $2,200 US). Model: GT15CF-I73080VR Tuf RTX 3080 10GB + i7-12700KF I spent another ~$400 US on a 2 TB Samsung NVME SSD (for 4.5 TB total storage), 64 GB Corsair Vengeance 3600 Ram (16 gb x 4), and a couple more fans. This is my first gaming desktop & it’s been a beast for gaming, editing & rendering. Ran great for VR Sim Racing, as well. I already had a 32” 4k monitor & a 34” 1440p 144hz ultrawide. For around $1,800 US total with the upgrades I installed, I personally feel that I got a good deal. For my current needs, this will be a solid starting point to learn & expand upon. The model I have seems to have some higher quality base components in it - since it had OEM “features” missing from the one in the video, which makes sense since it’s a more expensive SKU. That said, I despise the case & will eventually upgrade to something more sleek. This sale derailed my plans to build a computer myself. Since I greatly enjoy modifying and building things (vehicles especially), I ended up basically disassembling the computer and reassembling just so I could better understand the inner workings of it. While there are some less than ideal aspects of the computer from the factory, I highly enjoy being able to identify those shortcomings & figuring out ways to overcome them (in a reliable yet affordable manner when possible). The two most expensive parts of a computer (GPU + CPU) SHOULD be powerful enough for me for some years to come. Plus, I wanted to somewhat put to use the plethora of knowledge that I’ve learned from this channel over the last 8 months of binge watching every new video, years of back catalog, and Floatplane Exclusives. The way everyone covers their topic is not only entertaining, but informative in a way that makes it easy for me to retain the information.❤ ( I don’t need a server rack in my life, but I sure do want to know everything about them- because, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

But if they can start dominating the market due to "shortages" of standalone components, they can finally break those open standards and lock consumers into buying prebuilt PCs. What the hell are we going to do about that?
@Zorro91293 жыл бұрын
Can you solve the nationwide microprocessor shortage?
@AeranoZ3 жыл бұрын
The only thing consumers can do is to just not buy the product. Sadly, the vast majority of people aren't interested or confident enough to build their own PC's, so a few enthusiasts staying away from a product they were gonna stay away from in the first place will... You guessed it - change absolutely nothing.

Upgrading the power supply is always a good move. The more overhead you have the longer it will last. I've burned through several cheap power supplies over the years to learn this. Except Valve wouldn’t be able to make R.O.I for years on that investment. That’s the hardest part of that. It would help maintain a true supply for Gamers, but from their perspective, that will take years to get back their money on it. And if they bulk-order GPUs and then the model they bought flops? What now? They seed them out so slowly that it’ll take forever to sell them all to the people who don’t want them, but can’t afford anything else. It sounds like a good idea, but it’s a hard one to finance on a for-profit basis. It’s a lot of risk without the ability to have a quick R.O.I.
