I was at the Canadian Datacentre conference in Hamilton back in 2019 and went to a talk with one of the OVH guys about how the Quebec DC worked. It really is fascinating how much engineering they put into their cooling setup. I believe he quoted a 98% reduction in cooling power usage for what they do versus a typical datacentre which is crazy good.
@tombrauey2 жыл бұрын
And given that it is already a water-based solution, the next logical step would be to heat water and/or homes with it. I was a bit surprised to learn that they have just a heat exchanger with the surrounding air.
@Brurgh2 жыл бұрын
@@tombrauey the issue could be how close they are to the locals. I believe i read that Meta was combining their data centres in scandanavia with district heating, which already has infrastructure inplace, although not as efficiently as they are using air to water exchanger which then gets pumped into homes & businesses. More uses of excess heat produced by Data centres is essential in this climate!

I Honestly think since Luke is running floatplane and having to deal with servers and more enterprise stuff, I feel like Luke should be more of the lead with the big server stuff. Also now that Linus and Luke have trained their staff well, It's nice to see them getting back to challenging each other in crazy ways while the rest of the staff handle the more day to day operations allowing these crazy videos to take place.

server stuff is more Jake and Anthony's cup of tea, not to put Luke down or anything and Wendal is "Server Master".
@sarah13902 жыл бұрын
@@keymad4 I get what you are saying and I agree totally. I'm just saying that Luke rather than Linus should be the main translator between what Jake or Anthony say to a more average person's level. I get the feeling that Luke would be able to more concisely convey their information compared to Linus and why Luke should be more involved with the server stuff. it takes talent to convey highly technical concepts to an average person's level

idk, jake is kind of a networking genius.
@sarah13902 жыл бұрын
@@AyyyGabagool Oh I agree Jake is a networking Genius. He has the knowledge and passion. The only thing I see Jake lacking in his presentation style is the ability to put it simply "Dumb It down" to a level to where a slightly technical person or even a newcomer can easily understand what he is going on about. Linus has that ability to simplify it to some degree but I always felt Luke had that ability to a bigger degree than Linus. Lets just say to keep it in the LTT Ecosystem is take his knowledge and put it into Techquickie format. Luke used to host a lot of Techquickie before he became head of Floatplane so he has gotten a feel for how certain terms need to be put into simple examples even if there was another writer involved. If Jake could work on that then by all means I would love him to fully host the server stuff.

The server that caught fire dated from 2011, that is to say an old technology with old standards. And the fire seems to have taken at the level of the inverters. The only real things I blame them for is not having had a backup, on another site like Roubaix for example.
