While I don’t have technical or scientific reasoning behind it, I believe the spaced out vibration pads are intended to increase flow/velocity. Two examples of seeing similar versions: •Air compressor blow guns: I detailed cars for 4 years and the larger sized compressor air blow guns had a tip with holes on the side to pull air from around the gun through the exit tube/barrel. When plugging the holes or removing the tip that contained the holes, the air velocity/pressure felt half of what it did with the holes. Turbocharged drag cars: it’s newer implementation, but lots of racers in import classes started to space the intake stack/tube for the turbo on 1500+Horsepower engines about 5mm away from the turbo charger inlet, and removing the silicone coupler that sealed the connection. Doing so, the cars picked up 2-3 PSI and 2 MPH on the trap speed, which may not sound significant but is pretty impressive for cars of those calibers. These two examples lead me to believe that the spacing is intentional

The thicker anti-vibration pads are used for the rear fan when using a Push/Pull configuration. It will optimize the acoustics by keeping the front of the rear fan clear of the heatsink, which could otherwise result in turbulence. The NH-U14S has these as well, and the manual reads: "The NH-U14S includes an extra set of fan clips and an extra set of thicker anti-vibration pads for installing a second NF-A15 fan in push/pull mode in order to further improve cooling performance. Please use the thicker anti-vibration pads on the rear NF-A-15 fan for improved acoustics if space allows." Seems the manual of the U12S Redux has no mention of this... cutting cost by saving Ink? :D
@gempio2634
@gempio2634 2 жыл бұрын
Rubber pads are definitely an acoustic choice. When a fan spins, it generates vibrations, which would then press against the heatsink and potentially even project outwards increasing the volume of the cooler. The Pads act as a suspension between the cooler and the heatsink eliminating vibrations and likely shaving a few db. The big gap is probably so that the air doesn't whistly through the heatsink and enters at a lower pressure lessening the need for a conversion cable to low rpm which would in turn lower the pressure so very smart moves on Noctua. Every little thing they do has a really good reason

I'm not sure if it's an "issue" specific to Noctua fan designs, but installing the NH-D15's fans with the intake side mounted to the rear of the fin stacks causes very noticeable noisy turbulence. I would assume that's why they included the thick spacers for the rear fan.

The folks at Noctua are really great. I'm happy to pay their premium because the products are excellent and the customer support is great. This can't be said for a majority of PC hardware manufacturers, especially those that make coolers. Further, an excellent air cooler that you can actually get mounting hardware for future sockets makes them last ages. I definitely plan on running my NH-D15S for the next 8-10 years, especially with PC hardware becoming more efficient with time.

I assumed that Noctua products didn't offer the best value, but after I did a lot of research, I just couldn't find any cheaper options which offered the same level of reliability, and Noctua fans also offer excellent cooling and noise performance. They're even more energy efficient, typically using about half the power of other fans, which can be very useful if you want to connect multiple fans to a single fan header. The reliability in particular is extremely impressive, and also what makes Noctua fans actually provide very good value over the long run. When I moved to using an AM4 motherboard, my Noctua CPU cooler was no longer compatible, but all I had to do was fill out a simple form online, and they sent me an AM4 CPU mounting kit, (from Europe all the way to North America), and didn't even charge any shipping. Just the fact that they have these upgrade kits at all is amazing. Most companies wouldn't dream of doing this, because they want to force you to upgrade rather than keep things running for as long as possible.

Bought this for a now dated i5 2500k using Socket H2 LGA-1155. The description suggests it would be compatible which it sorta is, but not easily. I had to rig it in a weird way for it to work - but it worked. The frustration was worth it though, my CPU temps are fabulous! Under full load while gaming at Stock CPU speeds, temps never got above 50'c on any of the cores. Nice and quiet and I'm happy enough with it. When I eventually upgrade my CPU and Mobo this will definitely be used for that setup!

Fan clips for a 2nd fan are easy to get if you contact Noctua. I just purchased this cooler to replace a cooler master LC240E AIO with a failed pump. I had previously upgraded the AIO with two NF-A12x25 fans which are still working just fine. I want to use both fans on the cooler, but needed extra clips to do so. I contacted Noctua support and the next day received a response offering to send extra clips. All I had to do was send them proof of purchase for the cooler and my mailing address. Should receive the cooler today. I plan to compare the stock fan with the A12s to see what kind of temp or noise improvement I get.

I changed the fans (because the original ones had 3-pin connectors that didn't work on the Intel motherboard) but it's still performing very well. I might get a NH-U12S for my next system though - it will depend on whether I can get a 4th mounting bracket for my U12P. Oh, I forgot to add : if you can provide the bill to Noctua, they'll ship a mounting bracket for free... At least for the first 10 years.
