One thing I think needs mentioning is the significance of the 90 Hertz screen, not because a lot of games will be running at 90, but because a lot will be running at 40 or 45. The Steam Deck community has largely embraced the "golden 40" as a frame and refresh rate that is not that much more intensive to run than 30, but goes halfway to 60 in terms of frametimes, making it the optimal experience for games where hitting a native 60 isn't possible. The only problem is, you're downlocking the screen to 40 hertz for it, and so if a frame of those 40 is slightly late, you're waiting a whole 25 ms of stutter for the next one, compared to just 16.6 ms if running 30fps @ 60 hz. With a 90 hertz screen running at 80, that 40fps frame coming in slightly late is gonna halve that stutter time to 12.5 ms, which is HUGE in practice. Great choice!

The beauty of the steam deck is that a new generation of console doesn’t mean that the old turns obsolete. New titles will still run on it, just not as good. If you want to play the latest 2D indie titles on your “old” console you can! And you can for a long long time. That’s a big difference compared to traditional consoles where development stops usually within the year for most major titles and after a few years the digital store shuts down. Because the steam Deck is so open, you can use it so long as you want. Even with latest software if you’re willing to service it yourself.

it is nice that Valve made a re-freshed model, but, to be fair, I don't think that the difference will be big enough to buy "new" Steam Deck if some one already has one. I mean It may sound silly, but I play most of my games off... SD card on my steam deck. And it is actually hard to notice difference in loading times & performance vs internal storage. Valve did some black magick here. I am more likely to buy some insane 1TB ultra fast SD card tbh lol. people are CRAZY for handhelds in Malaysia, the Switch scene has ballooned to crazy proportion during the covid times and yet Valve refuses to release them here as well :((. While some local shops do sell it its always at a higher price, though tbf its still better than gray market so theres that. Im not sure how the Ally is doing here exactly but its definitely selling

I love my Steam deck, I bought the top one at launch, the only thing that would make me consider a upgrade is if they allowed a low power mode that let you download while plugged in and the screen off. currently, it will suspend all downloads when the screen blanks. so if i don't touch it for a couple weeks, it has to update all of my games at once.

Hopefully they will implement this in the near future

This screen is very interesting if by chance they are using Nintendos source. I am wishing here, but imagine if this is the screen that will be used on the switch 2. OLED HDR on the switch 2 would be a system killer!

Gotta love Valves commitment to the end user. making the unit's internals accessable and all your accessories working on the newest version. incredible job Valve. Also, their version of Linux, gives me hope that one day when Microsoft finally pisses me off enough to leave, I have a worthwhile alternative.
@MrWizardGG Жыл бұрын
None of their products are that well supported. Overpriced hardware with goofy ecosystems. Supporting Bluetooth accessories is not that groundbreaking...

Not sure if SteamOS would be the best alternative, compared to things like Linux Mint. But the great thing is that Steam and Proton work on any linux distro!

I'm just crossing my fingers that a screen swap will work when the replacement parts become available. That's basically what I've been hoping for from the start. Given it uses the same interface and is the same resolution and the outer size including bezels is the same there's no reason it shouldn't work. Maybe it'll need a shim or something due to being thinner so that it sits flush.

Steve of GN already addressed this and no, it's not possible.

Confirmed by Valve Head of Hardware that it will not work given the completely new motherboard and internal redesign.

@@nickzazzer Yeah, maybe not completely ruled out but it looks like it's definitly not out of the box. We'll have to wait and see if a adaptor or something can be made. And if that's even worth it at that point, I guess it also depends on how much lcd versions end up selling second hand.
@PR0XIDIAN Жыл бұрын
It won't, the internals of the deck got very re-arranged for this one. Even the way the back plate screws on is different. Fan is different too. A third party could make an OLED for the original deck (similar to the DeckHD) but the new screen won't drop into the old.
@RichardWinskill Жыл бұрын
Very excited that they're continuing to advance the hardware, because I absolutely love my Deck, but I'm satisfied enough with the LCD one that this is too incremental for me to justify the expense. Hopefully they keep going, so eventually I can justify a sufficiently large upgrade ;)

I think the 800p is just fine for the device. I love the direction they are going with more efficient hardware/battery economy with a focus on a console experience, consumer friendly device. Which is something the pc space is desperately needing.

Text is a little jagged on my deck, so it'd be nice to see something like 1440x900 on the 2nd gen. We were all happy with that on 13-inch laptops for a long time.
@bongwatersupreme6353 Жыл бұрын
@@spacetoast7783 I think that would be nice tbh. 900p seems like the sweet spot.

Man you are wrong at every point. Trying to pack a whole computer into a body of a steam deck is highly inefficient and compromises gaming quite a bit. 800p 30 fps is a shit result and the heat and battery life are still bad. The whole idea is a fail imo when streaming from a regular PC in 4k 60fps or 120 fps is so much better and easily attainable using DLSS, and uses much less battery life.
@bongwatersupreme6353 Жыл бұрын
@@MrWizardGG dude the whole point is to have a handheld gaming console that can natively run games as well as stream them. That's why people have the opinion of the playstation handheld already being a flop because its portable gaming but what... you can't leave the living room? the house? what's the point? The steam deck is portable pc gaming and the tech is only getting better.
