Linux - Install Ubuntu Server in VirtualBox

Installing Ubuntu Server into VirtualBox gives you the ability to create a lab environment without needing multiple physical machines.
Hardware Requirements
In general I would recommend your host computer has 16GB of RAM and an SSD. 8GB of RAM, or even less, will work but you may run into issues.
Make sure you know the hardware requirements of the server OS. Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS requires 512MB of RAM, and 2.5GB of Storage.

Installation ISO
The LTS stands for Long Term Support and means Canonical will support this version for 5 years.
Connect the downloaded ISO to your Virtual Machine by going to Settings - Storage - Select EMPTY under Controller: IDE - Click Circle Icon to the left side of the Optical Drive drop down box.
Installation ISO automatically disconnects after installation.

14:31 All other distros if you select entire hard disk create automatically a swap file and most if all of the times the size is wring according to memory. Here i dont see a swap file (even if nowadays its not necessary)

Thanks Eli. Successful. I think I had one issue with pinging after the server was built because I had set the Network to Bridge instead of just leaving it set at NAT. SO I corrected it and changed it back from Bridge to NAT. The nest step is working with setting up OpenVPN so that I can use it in tandem with Unbuntu Server so that I can setup VPN services to remote from my home to office to my office server. If you have tips on that, that would be great also. I find that OpenVPN is not as super friendly in its documentation, so you're left trying to figure out "how does this work sequentially?" Looks like a nice product though.

I’m fairly a noob but I have started forming some opinions based on my user experience. For one I know ubuntu is a Debian fork but somehow I always have big problems with ubuntu where as debian non-free tends to be awesome and stable. Ive heard ubuntu contains bloat (Debian nonfree would also have proprietary stuff I know) so would it be just a matter of personal preference if i used Debian as a service instead of ubuntu or is there a benefit I’m unaware of to ubuntu?

just upgrade your distro to the newest LTS version. do that by 'sudo apt dist-upgrade'

lol ubuntu sever 16.04 does everything opposite kinda silly but for some reason it wouldnt recognize my username so i booted root of grub and found it surprisingly easy to make changes to username/passwords i found this extremely alarming thx for all the knowledge

Stick to a release based distro with a long support time if the server should always be running.

No difference in the overall installation. Some distros will have different settings tucked away into different places when compared to Ubuntu Server. I prefer the LTS because you know it's been tested a little and can get support if you encounter issues.
