Guys like this are everywhere on the internet. I bet if I got him in voice chat he'd be unable to answer any basic computing questions I throw at him. Way too many teachers forget what it’s like being on the other side, or they don’t know how to communicate what they know effectively. So to have both of those traits - yeah, very rare

Hi, there is another wrinkle to this that he didn't cover: running Anonsurf or Tor (and a VPN) on the host operating system, then doing all the browsing from the guest operating system (either with or without a second VPN on the guest). My thinking is that this may "torrify" the guest operating system, while managing to sidestep malicious exit nodes, as browsing is not being done on the guest OS. . Do you have any thoughts on that? I was surprised by the simple and quick explanation. I am in a company for a year and a half now and it currently supports the navy. We use vSphere (which is VMware, but bigger) to create data servers, virtual machines, and more. Virtualization has been out for a long time after doing more research on it. It's really more engaging and amazing when you think about how simple and effective this technology can do for you at home, at work, at a company, or an organization. As you stated Chuck, you can learn hacking and you can break it any time, which is the best part if you plan on doing tests; and that is one reason it makes it effective! Thank you for creating this video! It gave me a better insight on what I'm doing for my system admin job.

Fun information about history of computing: the first virtualization system was a program called CP-40, and run on an IBM System/360 Model 67. The development team in the IBM lab at Cambridge (MA) needed more computers, in order to continue to develop and test new operating systems. This was in 1966-67, so computers were very expensive and the request was not granted. However, the development team were researchers, and they realized that an operative system was in a way a replica of the physical machine with a nicer user interface. But the nice stuff was not necessary so they could relatively easy create an operative system without any niceties, just a virtual copy of the physical machine. This "Operating system" become CP-40, and they run a small single user operating system on top of it called CMS. This eventually become IBM VM, VM/ESA, and today z/VM. CMS by the way looks and feels very much like the original MS/DOS, the original operating system for the IBM PC. I also guess that IBM/VM was the inspiration for at least the name of VMWare, and possibly the functionality as well.
@piotropoka2272 жыл бұрын
It's all cool and stuff, but... how did they do this without multicore processors? Where the opertaing systems so simple back then that 1 processor was enough for managing tasks for 2 OSs simultaneously? I mean, it's possible (from what I know, though I don't know any tools/programs that would allow for this today), but the supposed effect would be AT LEAST half much worse experience on tested OS, which is not something welcomed for, you know... testing. The question comes from my experience with VMs. I remember the times when it was impossible for me to use a virtual machine on 2 core 2 thread processor for modding ac1 game (which I paid deliberately on Steam to have access to it, since I couldn't find any pirated copy), but Steam would be so hard for my CPU and RAM that I wasn't even able to get further than just the title screen of the game XDDDDD I did set up the VM back then for testing it on win XP, because ac1 didn't work on win7 with backward compatibility either :(
@snowman82412 жыл бұрын
@@piotropoka227 Hello Piotr, This is explained in all university classes on operative systems. If you have not learned this, I recommend you to take that class. The short explanation is that you have to write a program that create a linked list of structures, where each structure has fields for all registers in the CPU and usually some more information too. Each structure holds the state for one virtual machine. In next step you have to write code that allows each virtual machine to run for something like 50 milliseconds, store the data in it's structure in the linked list, and continue with loading the next machine in the linked list round robin style. This is what any operative system does in order to allow you to run two or more programs simultaneously. The only difference is that if you want to create a Virtual Machine Monitor like CP-40, you present each application with the raw physical machine without any niceties. Basically CP-40 created the time sharing environment, and nothing else. CMS was a simple single user OS that created those nice things that the users like. Under the control of CP-40, it was possible to run multiple copies of CMS "at the same time". Operating systems like Linux and Microsoft Windows 10 combine this and hide much of the complexity, but the researchers at IBM realized that they could take advantage of a very simple time sharing OS. Basicaly, the computer can do a lot while waiting for you to press a key on your keyboard. Early, they had only one CPU or kernel, so the programs were not running exactly at the same time. Each user got a string of 50 millisecond slices, but the process was so fast that they could not notice. When IBM launched it's S/3090 system in 1985 it was possible to have up to eight CPU's in one computer. However, it is not a good idea to let more than one CPU change that vital linked list at the same time. That is the way to very major problems. It is necessary to lock the parts of the linked list you want to change from other CPU's before you can do anything, and unlock the same parts afterwards. This is the domain of semaphores and other synchronization primitives. I guess that this is what you run into with your 2-core computer. For more information, I would like to recommend the book "Operating Systems, design and Impelentation" by A. S Tannenbaum. www.amazon.com/Operating-Systems-Design-Implementation-3rd/dp/0131429388/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2E9WYOZBTXETC&keywords=the+minix+book&qid=1647635951&sprefix=the+minix%2Caps%2C141&sr=8-2 It is an excellent book, and I learned a lot from it. In fact I brought the first edition in the 1980:ths and the third edition seven years ago.
