Check out the latest Linux Mint 22 beta release with some nice updates for average users. See what's new and improved in this upcoming version of Linux Mint! I've tried the latest Ubuntu Cinnamon, MX Linux and other Linux distros, but I don't think there's anything better than Linux Mint. This beta release improves on what is already a great Linux desktop. One of the nicest updates is the flatpack warning which you can switch on or off, it's an extra level of security when installing new software. Look for the stable release of this version sometime soon, whenever the Linux Mint team decides to get it out.

I do appreciate Mint's steady incremental improvements, rather than radical changes, since I depend on a stable computer and don't need up-to-date gaming capabilities and the like. And Mint's presentation continues to be the one that fits best with my expectations of how a desktop should look and operate.

I've tried pretty much all the main stream distro's over the years & always come back to Mint. Not had any problems with the beta 22 build.I use Chrome installed v chrome website rather than the unverified flatpak. My Win 11 laptop will be Minted as so as the official 22 is out. Good vid Mr John !

I think they've got a handle on it really well and it'll be exciting to see the standard stable release

In my early days as a zealous Linux convert, I tried literally dozens of versions on a cheap old laptop I bought for the purpose. I have now settled on three Linux distros: I run Zorin on my disposably cheap travel machine that has no personal data on it, and MX on that "tester machine" that I use as a Debian emergency computer in the event that anything Ubuntu-based goes south. My good old daily tower is and has always been Mint. Looking forward to 22.

I tried the Linux mint Debian edition but if I'm going to go that route, I do prefer MX Linux

I've been a Linux Mint user since version 16, and I'm looking forward to version 22 and how it will affect me personally. I only tried out the beta version briefly as a Live session, as I don't have the time for an extensive test - on real hardware - at the moment. But one thing is certain: as soon as the final version is released, I will update. Without ifs and buts, because I know that Clement and his team have done an excellent job on this time as well.

I really like the warning for unverified flat packs and if you don't switch it over to always showing that it will by default give you a verified flat pack. Really nice because sometimes I was never sure where the software was coming from and I didn't like that.

I've tried the beta, rock solid as you would come to expect from Mint.

I've never really tried a beta version of a Linux distribution although I've used mint for a few years now. I'm glad I tried and I found out that it's really not a problem for what I use it for. I just really think they do a great job on the project, just the best operating system I've ever used.

Tried the beta and loved how much faster the Software Manager is now. Had no issues whatsoever. Being based on a much newer kernel was neat. The only gripe I still have is that preinstalled software packages are not marked as such in the Software Manager, but if you want to uninstall them you'll have to go through Synaptic, and there's a chance there to bork your system. Preinstalled apps should either be optional or uninstallable through the Software Manager. With the system packages now being newer versions there's less temptation to use oversized and slow to load flatpacks. Totally agree with how Linux Mint is just the best daily driver out there, though I prefer the XFCE4 version. Most impressive was running this beta on a i7 5500U and winamp vizualizations pop on it running through bottles and it uses just 20% CPU.

I too am running this on an I7 so I appreciate that newer kernel. But also trying it on a 10 year old machine, same great result.

I tried CachyOS, Zorin, Ubuntu, and Nobara as well as Mint21.3...and I have to say that Linux Mint was by far the easiest one to understand and operate for a person coming off Windows. Fixing the numerous 'printer found' messages will be nice, because that's irritating. And another thing that bothers me is if you save files to a specific directory over and over the system doesn't seem to remember that, so you have to go hunt it out again and again. Maybe I just don't understand what's going on, but the file system behavior is a little strange. Other than that, I've used it now on an MSI C61 laptop for over a month and don't miss Windows annoying pestering a bit.

I had my first problem with LM 22 Beta, 2 days ago. The cinnamon greeter disappeared after an update and it wouldn't boot back into LM until I reinstalled the cinnamon meta package (Don't remember exact name off top of my head) Just a heads up for anyone who decides to use this on bare metal like I did. It worked perfectly before that and it works perfect now that I fixed it.

I wish they had a good version of it with KDE, that is still my favorite desktop, but I'll stay with cinnamon because the mint application just works better with it. But I'm right there with you I love that KDE platform. It will function and run on it but it tends to be a little buggy

I have Mint on one of my my machines it's great. To paraphrase, you'd never get fired for choosing Linux Mint. If you want to try some other distros for fun, maybe some independent ones, the ones not based on. Void or Slackware maybe.

I think the closer they get to something that is very regular not unlike the commercial distributions like Windows or Mac, then there's really something to promote with possibly some outside help. I know there's a lot of people that would disagree with me on that.
