Same here. Linux Mint may not be as "up to date" as rolling release distros, or Cinnamon as "configurable" as KDE Plasma, but Mint Cinnamon is very stable and just lets me get on with what I need to do!

I would not be able to use my computer if it were not for Redshift, my eyes are sensitive when things get too bright. So, it is not only the "blue light" thing that is the only main user case. For people with eye conditions Redshift and "Nightlight" are a lifesaver.

3:56 - "blue light keeps you up" is a terrible oversimplification of the actual problem. What it DOES is actually affects the quality/depth of sleep. It's like how some people say "I can drink coffee at 10pm and sleep fine" while others struggle. Personally, I noticed the biggest difference when I bought physical blue-light blocking glasses - I started having dreams in my sleep for the first time in what felt like months and woke up feeling rested. So, no, Night Light isn't some kind of hoax or placebo. It's not as effective as glasses, but it's a good step.
@oraz.
@oraz. 20 күн бұрын
I've never heard anything about it affecting sleep quality, but it does suppress melatonin which basically keeps you up but moreso shifts your sleep phase later. That's why light therapy is the cornerstone of circadian sleep health.

Agree with you 100%, here👍! As a relatively new Linux Mint user, the addition of 'Nightlight' will be a very much appreciated addition to the whole LM experience. In the enforced absence of 'Redshift' (from LM 22 onwards), we definitely DO need something like 'Nightlight', going forwards, particularly when we are at the keyboard for more than 50-60 minutes at a time (in the evenings or nighttime).
@Winnetou17

It's not as effective as glasses ? That's a bit weird to me. I remember seeing a local guy (pretty well-known and respected romanian physicist) doing a test with a spectrometer and finding out that the computer not emitting the light works best, by a good margin, compared to a filter that you put over a monitor, or glasses. Now, probably the quality of the glasses can differ, but the screen simply not emitting the blue light should always be the best-working solution. Unless, I'm thinking, maybe if it's a low quality one which doesn't have good color reproduction, it might have its red or green diodes also emitting blue light somehow.
@electricalbatross5797
@electricalbatross5797 16 күн бұрын
@@Winnetou17 interesting, my only guess is not all screens and glasses are created equal. The benefit of the glasses is that it works for anything beyond just screens, as more people are switching to brighter LEDs to light their homes to similar effect. There are also varying levels of strength for the glasses, red tints being more effective than yellow at blocking the blue light but being far less desireable for obvious reasons. Like I said though, I can only speak from experience and it was a night and day difference between using the glasses and not using them.
@Winnetou17
@Winnetou17 16 күн бұрын
@@electricalbatross5797 Fair point. And, yeah, glasses can still be very useful for their versatility, as they can be used to block from any source.

Most desktop environments already have a night light feature built in. Both the Gnome and KDE desktops do, so does Gnome Flashback. It can be found in the display settings so there is no need to install Redshift, unless you like the Redshift features better. I have Debian Trixie with Cinnamon 6.29 which is I think an earlier version than Linux Mint's LMDE6. Which I think is Cinnamon 6.80. So I don't think Debian Cinnamon will be getting this feature any time soon. Though you can always install Redshift or another software like it if you want a night light. I don't use it myself and although it is in the Gnome and KDE settings I keep it turned off.

Love this channel. Always good to hear concise information about one of the best operating systems out there. If mint could just build a cohesive system that worked for ex windows users, I believe you'd see a very large migration towards Linux. I'll give an upvote for Cinnamon's improvements. Around the time of that update I installed MX Linux on a Thinkpad, and of course they don't have a dedicated Cinnamon spin. I installed the Cinnamon package through the MX Package Installer, and really noticed the differences! Very nice compared to the old look. I admit that at first glance I thought the MX team might have done a little customizing and that confused me since like I said, no official spin, but then I remembered the update. I feel as comfortable with my MX setup as I do with my Mint and LMDE setups. Yeah, I feel fortunate that I don't have issues with displays affecting my sleep. I keep saying a Framework will be my next laptop, but as much as I like resuscitating old tech, I doubt it will happen lol.

For me the blue light is uncomfortable to look at at night, almost painfully so. I had a modem with blue LEDs on the front that were like death rays. A dimmed red-shifted screen is much nicer.

So for me they have to make Wayland default as its the future Xorg not for me. I'm using Fedora gnome too on my second laptop and both kde and gnome just works fine no issues F41.

For me, it's not so much that the blue light keeps me up but rather that it is so damned bright, even when I turn the brightness down on my laptop. I use gammasstep in hyprland and the softer colors makes it much easier to view in a completely dark room.

Planning to upgrade RAM in my pc, with LMDE as a main OS and Win11 in a virtual machine, on nvme. I can go up to 64GB RAM, currently having 2x8GB. Will I benefit from 64GB or is it an overkill? I am not a gamer, just a standard user that wants to have a backup Win11 system if the need comes.

I haven't switched yet but I hope to... if my old brain can accommodate the changes. 😊 I have a question. I got some older Linux books hoping to understand the process of installing and getting used to all of this new lingo that I would have to understand. I've installed programs but never installed an OS before. I found a book on ebay, "Linux in Easy Steps" by Mike McGrath, it was published all the way back in 2006, but its illustrated and in color. It goes through everything from hardware, partions, etc. It does not cover Linux Mint. It only mentions Ubuntu, Redhat Fedora, SUSE and Mandriva. Looking at this book it seems easy enough and takes a LOT of the fear of messing it up or getting partway through the installation and setup and not being able to complete it because I don't know what the heck they are talking about; however, has Linux changed so much that this book would be totally outdated??? Anybody familiar wih the book? Or do I need to take my computer to a shop and have them install it for me? 😢

I have been using Linux Mint for several years. My main frustration with it is I can't get XBMC/Kodi to work on it for the last few months. It used to work just fine up till then. It doesn't seem to be getting supported and upgraded like it used to now and just crashes to desktop or doesn't even open. I have tried using the flat pack from software manager and the stable/nightly stable builds with terminal but nothing works. Any one have a solution for this? Is there a different distro that has better support for Kodi? I've only used Mint and haven't ever tried other distro's.

The blue light thing isn't false, It's definitely salient to night owls and people with delayed sleep phase. Light therapy is the main treatment in sleep medicine for that reason. I suspect the debunking is dubious but gained popularity for some reason.

@SwitchedtoLinux 20 күн бұрын
We can agree to disagree but there is evidence that blue light does not matter...I even sat through a seminar on grad school from a light-sleep researcher. In his studies, it is not the wavelength of light that impacts sleep, it is the intensity of light.
@oraz.

@SwitchedtoLinux I think the distribution being roughly centered on blue matters in the way that sunlight has the same spectral properties so reddish light should not be a signal as much as full spectrum cool white light at night. You're right though that blue light specifically is not the point. Maybe we disagree, that's the reccomedation of decent sleep specialists I've seen including one who still do research, but I have a lifelong sleep phase problem . It's also not completely about sleep for me, by now it looks weird to have a cool spectrum to me to It's comfortable to have it on.
