I've decided to make up a few bootable flash drives to pass around to people to give Linux Mint (mate) a try. If their machines are not compatible with WeenDoze11 then WE know that Linux is the way to go. Since I'm a Linux Mint priestess, I of course want other to enjoy Linux as I do Too bad Rufus is an exe file. Sure I could wine about it, but I'll stick with etcher. It;s been a few months since I;ve used it sooooo, we'll see.

You sound like me with regard to Mint and working in a familiar environment. My old laptop is dual boot, Win7/Mint. I have an old HP all in one that was my mother in laws running Mint. I mostly use a somewhat newer computer running Win10 with Mint in a VM. After booting I almost always just go straight into the VM. One thing I really wonder about is how isolated my VM is from windows. Lets say a key logger in installed on the widows host, can it see anything I do on the VM.

I've been using AVL to record audio with Reaper. Thoroughly enjoy using it and having the simple scripts to get Windows based VST plug-ins installed. Just made it really easy to handle and work with. I did switch to KDE Plasma from Enlightenment. Didn't care for the Enlightenment workflow and interface. If you're interested in doing any audio work, give AVL a try. He's done a great job with the distro. And I do realize this is a 3yr old video :)

if win 10 doesn't work for you, 23H2 is the last image that's worth upgrading but ONLY if you do a fresh complete install and don't allow it to update and get your drivers from 3rd parties. 23h2 won't let you decide what upgrades you don't want and all the "necessary" updates will install things you don't want and change some settings automatically. windows is degrading your systems to force you to buy NEW HARDWARE! namely copilot pc's.
@fatherfoxstrongpaw8968

the problem has nothing to do with windows, it's your system. it isn't good enough to handle the "advanced features" in windows. just update your hardware, you'll be fine.

Around 31:00 - I recommend Ventoy for trying out Linux .ISOs (or any .ISO for that matter) - simply copy the .ISO to it; also easy to verify the copied file. Ventoy is available for Windows, Linux and as a Live CD.

I believe that Microsoft will use AI to much to their own advantage in Windows. Because they are a corporation that constantly looks at ways to improve earnings. The Linux community might flip this on the head and have the user in focus with AI utilization

You are very negative towards AI? However the Linux community needs to see how AI can be implemented in a better and more useful way. It doesn't help to bury your heads like ostrich. Will new Linux distros support new AI ready CPU's? I believe for sure. Will the Linux community develop spreadsheets and other office programs that benefit, well that's the open question. It could help on so many different arenas, even on the desktop to learn a little about your preferences

02:55 I'm afraid you're mistaken. While 192.168.*.* is the most common private range, there are also the ranges 10.*.*.* and 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 that are normal and NAT-routable local network ranges. The 169.254.*.* range is a "link-local" address range, which is unroutable and restricted to the local network only. Obviously a mistake but it's not "going anywhere" actually by definition, it can't ;). Usually that's used as a fallback in Windows if no IP address gets assigned by the DHCP server, so yeah, some weirdness with DHCP or similarly failing address assignments for sure.

4 me 't will be switching 2 KDE Plasma running on either Manjaro or LinuxMX. Very recently I installed both on similar xhand Fujitsu Esprimo E9900 desktop PCs to assess what suits me best: rolling or fixed release. My rather ltd available iNet bandwidth (=DSL16 only) is part o/t equation. I would've been on Linux KDE years ago, had not Mint dumped this version just after I'd decided upon it. Thus I stuck with Win8.1 & 10 Pro till now. 11, however, will most definitely NOT become my daily driver; neither will anything Ubuntu (especially Mint!). :_[ hYlkeW (70y)

I think 169.254.x.x addresses can be used to disable access by Windows to the network on some interface and to use network card inside of virtual machine in bridged mode to use that card to connect to the Internet.

I use MX Linux KDE on both my desktop and my craptop. Thinking about switching the craptop to either flagship or Fluxbox, tbh, just because it's an ultrabook format, low power Celeron craptop, but its still more performant with KDE than it was with Windows 11 that it came with.

I did some digging on the almost 9GB of undeletable windows update files and they're located in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download". To delete them I turned off the windows update service (wuauserv) in services.msc, then deleted the contents of "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" (I didn't delete the actual Download folder, just the contents of it. I didn't lose my windows update history by doing that, so no ill effects), then turned the windows update service back on. Now the almost 9GB is gone but it still shows it as being there in disk cleanup in settings. About Recall in Windows 11 24H2: it's not listed as installed but you can check if it's enabled (it is) using dism in an administrator command prompt by running "dism /Online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:Recall". You can disable it with the command "dism /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:Recall" and then verify that it's disabled with the first command. I manually made a scheduled task that runs the disabling command as administrator (that runs dism as administrator without triggering a UAC prompt) at every logon. I'm seriously considering wiping this Windows 11 24H2 install and installing Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021 that's supported with security updates until the year 2032, so when somebody tells you that Windows 10 support ends in 2025 that is incorrect.

also, disable IPv6, by default it also de-anonymizes because you usually are given that address from a DHCP server provided by your ISP.

MX linux looks cool but I've heard things about not being able to update very easily or... stuff like that. So far I've put Fedora on a laptop that I havent used much but it seemed like a decent distro, went with the KDE version. I noticed LibreOffice doesn't scale correctly, though, and is very hard to use.

again i must prepeat: we need an universal executable format. the software should never be tied to an OS. and i know what people will say: "but this will destroy security", i dont believe so. given how the structures of the OS are radicaly different, it would take much more to be a bad actor than to just run an aplication. also, no app should run ring 0 ever, or require such, and this should be enshrined in law. imo this whole situation is a signal that we really, REALLY need serious reforms in the computer space. maybe an anti-trust case against MS and Apple would do wonders, and oligopolies should be as illegal as monopolies. also, if OSes and critical use stuff for a PC to boot (like UEFIs, and common components) were all mandated to be FOSS and forkeable, this problem would be much much less pronounced.

Windows users try Linux Mint. Stay away from Arch distros until you have a good grasp of the terminal commands. I made the mistake of going with an Arch distro and the learning curve was steep but I stuck with it and learned a lot along the way. With that said, I am never going back to Windows ever. Linux is so much faster and snappier than Windows that it isn't even funny. Most games work in Linux but some of the anticheat ones. The anticheat software makers could easily allow Linux with a simple update but they choose not to for whatever reason. That is not Linux's fault though. Also, yea some games require some command line arguments to run but some of the arguments could be used for several games so it can be copy and pasted to run a game. Anyway, there is a learning curve but once put in the effort and learn it you will not go back to Windows trust me. Try Linux today!

I started with Linux about a year ago, have 2 desktops and a laptop and maintain the one Win10 22h2 (with update to 11 blocked in group policy editor) for gaming which admittedly isnt fully ready for primetime in Linux but we'll see next October and maybe that one will migrate too. The other desktop has Fedora Workstation 41/KDE Plasma on it which is so wicked and configurable really liking it, like old school WinXP or something, can do whatever you want with it. And the laptop has Linux Mint which was compatible with everything on the laptop out of the box since it had Intel Iris XE graphics which has kernel support built-in and Realtek network and audio which were also supported out of the box. Though thats actually LDME the Debian version since for a laptop I wanted consistency and stability over time moreso than a newer kernel, etc. If I do end up migrating the Windows machine next year I might putz around with Arch (umm, oh right.. btw)

@@swagmuffin9000the problem is that a lot of the stuff that is Windows only, is also resource intensive. Running it in a VM is not an option, and I doubt that creative professionals would be able to invest time in a VFIO/GPU passthrough setup without hurting their income in the process.

II am a CentOS Developer and have been using Linux since 2003 for my daily business machine and recently (about 2 months ago) switched my last remaining windows machine (a gaming rig) to Nobara Linux 40. All my 250(ish) games are Steam based. I have yet to find one I can't play. (Note: I do not use any game that requires an anti-cheat software). The OP is a Debian/Ubuntu fan, while I personally use the Red Hat (rpm) ecosystem rather than deb based distributions. One thing I absoultely agree with him on though is it has never been easier to switch from Windows to Linux. And I'm sorry Microsoft, but NO you can't take pictures of everything I do every 5 seconds and store it on my machine for people who I don't want to have access to my entire computer history. I think the latest version of Plasma (KDE) is fairly close to Windows as far as how it looks (toolbars, notifactions, etc). Cinnamon is also certainly fine. I persoanlly could live without XFCE, though I have tried it. GNOME does not look like Windows and I prefer KDE, but GNOME is very customizable and you can make it work like you want as well. Just give Linux a try.

I am actually having Win11 on a gen2 usb, booting into it from a LMDE laptop. I configured that bitch to stay on the 23h2 version. I already had to uninstall tons of bloatware. I rarely boot into it, more like for just updates. Win10 still sits on the desk, until next year. LMDE will take over and use Win11 when absolutely necessary.
