I use Firefox & Duckduck Go, and yes, in Europe we do have a choice of search engines.... On my Android, I only have Google search, I've disabled Chrome, just because. I find Firefox unusable on my phone. Honestly, I rarely use my phone to search anything other than Rotten Tomatoes, or similar. Anything important is done on Linux with FF or ZEN, and Duckduck Go or Wikipedia, depending on what I'm looking for. Yeah, I think forcing Google to sell Chrome is incredibly ignorant and stupid!

I recently built a HTPC and put Linux Mint on it to try it out. There were quite a few snags, but there are a lot of helpful videos and forum posts, and now I'm happy with it. I plan on converting my main PC into a dual drive/boot soon. Hopefully more people try out Linux, esp. as Win 10 ends and the used market gets flooded with PCs that won't run Win 11.

IF we as consumers should be able to block PH, we should also have the option - to easily block any and all ads, period, no matter where we happen to be. After all, I consider most ads just as obnoxious and potentially dangerous, especially on a mobile device or tablet.

I think at first use of an OS you should be provided with choices for your web browser, it could be defined as a number, 5 or 7 options, from different web engines as well. With your first experience of a web browser, you should have to choose from several default search engines as well. To finish, I think when you buy a computer (desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone <- which are "pocket telephonic computers" too) it should be mandated that manufacturers and sellers always offer the option to purchase it free of any programs or OS. You could buy a PC with Windows pre-installed, or the same with nothing installed with equal ease, and the logic would be that the blank one is cheaper. Those who think it's intimidating to install your own OS and programs always have the choice of a pre-installed one, but all those adventurous enough, or with special needs and requirements would be equally happy to have more choices. Poorer people like students etc could save some money on software in exchange of some time and (rewarding) effort. In general terms it would help the population escape the "magic boxes" ideology and acquire some skills for the greater good.

Maybe Mozilla once they lose their google money could go back to doing what they are supposed to be doing. As soon as the big money leaves so will the utterly useless corporate management leeches as there won't be any more blood to suck. Then what's left of the foundation can get to work making a browser and other tools people actually want.

Truth be told you have to extensively set up your browser if you want to break free from F.A.N.G. You gotta change the search engine on basically every browser besides Brave. Having the Linux Foundation manage the Chromium browser seems like the best option. Moreover, they could force big tech to offer other search engines in an initial pop up at set up. Ultimately people will just choose Google I assume. There's literally a word in Russian "Гуглить" (Googlit'), which means to search something in a browser (any browser).

the longer I look at the situation with Chrome being forced to sell off, the more I think, yes, it should happen, but dang, Google sure did a good job at making this a turn that will hurt everyone in the process. To be honest, I think Android and Chrome shouldn't be their market. They are dominant because of that ad money. I bought a phone and had zero say in getting an advertising ID that I didn't want. I know how to change defaults, but everyone I hear "what web browser do you use." It's always "Google" to the standard user. No one is winning out of this, and unless they force sell it to a non-profit that actually stays non-profit and dissociated with Google, nothing will change.

Maybe all browsers should be forced allow any search engine the user wants, like how in Firefox you can under the search preferences where you type the website link and use %s to denote the search term. Option to let user select their preferred search engine on install is a good idea as well, but I’d suspect people will for the most part stick to using Google Search anyway

Technically it is a search engine because if you type in anything into the search bar (yes google calls it that). you end up at google. unless you change it (which they were sued in the past to be forced to allow other search providers who also have enough money to pay google for that) And google was spying on everyone with incognito mode when they said publicly it didn't track you it actually did. So yes Chrome is an extension of Google's Search Engine.
