Linux Mint Website Hacked!

In this video I talk about the Linux Mint website being hacked. This happened on February 20th 2016, were a Hacker took control of their website and uploaded a hacked version of the Linux Mint ISO. This image of Linux Mint containing a back door vulnerability. This is a serious security breach for Linux Mint and one that can not happen again. I hope you enjoy this video!

This is disappointing. As much as I like the premise Mint puts forward as a "slick alternative" to Ubuntu, if they cannot maintain security for their users, I fail to see why someone should trust it. I mean, they're still using MD5 sums to validate the legitimacy of an ISO. Even SHA1 would be better; preferably 256 or 512. It seems to me that people are not paying enough attention to security as of late. Linux is no longer an isolated project that can afford to "get by" in terms of security. If OpenBSD can do rigorous code review, then so can the other distros, doubly so with SUSE, Red Hat, and Ubuntu because they are financially backed by their corporate sponsors. Granted, Mint is not Ubuntu, but there was the recent issue with GCC where code could be executed remotely. How is it that one of the most core libraries does not get rigorously reviewed by practically any and all distributions? And not to go off into a tangent, but if user-friendly distros are serious about penetrating market share, security efforts are the bare minimum for incentivizing people to make the switch.

I had no idea of this. I am no expert and this is making me think twice now about Linux Mint. Is this the reason my system is collapsing? Or is that something else

Did not know about the Libgraphite, thanks looking into that one. As for Linuxmint hopfully the impact is minor given it was just the one day and only the 64bit version of Cinnamon however it was on a weekend typically the busiest download time for ISO's so time will tell I guess.

Well, according to me its healthy reflects increasing market share of Linux. No operating system can be cent percent safe all depends on security measures and awareness of Devs/Contributors/Enterprises.Undoubtedly Linux is most secure systems in all the avail options. May be rest of platforms are still under attack and decided not to let us know ... think twice :) Apart from that great measures and transparency by Mint team. I wish to see Mint based on Arch instead of Ubuntu/Deb.
