They use the Fox Fire. And the Email which they can't accurately tell you how they access, but 100% certain that their emails are on the computer and NEEDS to be backed up.

My two cents: I personally enjoy Windows 7 and Linux on my PC. I actually joined the bandwagon out of intrigue, discovering Ubuntu 12.04 for the first time and leaving it as is style-wise, same with Xubuntu Xenial. Then I used Arch Linux to make projects such as starting an Amiga emulator on boot. Next up was to explore Void and i3wm. I had a good journey with an appropriate amount of frustration, but Windows still had advantages, so I currently settle on Windows 7 pre-upgrade fiasco+VxKex and Ubuntu Unity 24.04 LTS after about a year of trying to make 10 cooperate. On my laptop, I felt that Linux was quite sufficient, so instead of dualbooting Windows, I had Ubuntu (until 18.04 degraded) and an upgraded Bunsenlabs Linux on it solo, respectively. I feel, however, that ultimately I'll have to lean more on Linux in the future as corporate efforts progress, at least until ReactOS becomes viable. I mainly sit outside the hype trains that happen often, but I hope that Linux can sort out many of its issues, it has lots of potential. (I will say, I had a lingering interest in BSD. I should set up a VM to check FreeBSD out.)

Arch works fine if you update it once a month or even more rare, I tested it. You won't see updates unless you explicitly check for them. I doubt the problem lies within Arch.

linux is great if you are a developer. window's users jumping on linux and then jumping back out. well, you can't really expect a polished experienced from from linux. it sucks on a lot of things that consumers care about. it's literally a free ecosystem built by developers for developers.

I don't understand what your issue is with updates. You don't want to update frequently? Don't. You want auto updates? Set up auto updates. I've never had this problem. Unfortunately I think your valid criticisms are let down by getting mixed in with a lot of personal preference opinions. You're saying Linux needs to be better - and I agree - but a lot of what you're saying is essentially "I don't like this so it's a flaw".

I think I understand what he's talking about. On Linux, because *everything* updates through one update system, and there's no real prioritization system, you get reminded to update for minor updates. Or you turn off the reminders, but now you don't get reminded to do major updates. This was the problem last time I tried Linux. On Windows and Mac, apps typically take care of their own updates, and core system libraries update less often. An overall better experience.

@MaxArcher755 I actually find apps handling their own updates to be annoying as hell and would prefer it to be centralised. When I open an app, I expect it to just open and work, so the whole "installing updates" window that has become so ubiquitous on Windows is very annoying for me. I would wager that the whole reason apps have to manage their own updates on Windows is because Microsoft has traditionally never offered any good - and actually useful - centralized package management solution, which is also why most people install third party apps by downloading EXEs from a hodgepodge of different online sources instead of just opening an app store or package manager (let's face it, the MS Store is awful and you can never find what you're looking for on it). I don't really see it as a problem, and am unsure why it would be seen as such. The most I can glean from this is that it mainly just seems to be a matter of preference and/or not being used to how things work. Having said that, perhaps the update scheduling could be categorised better as you say, to distinguish between app and system updates... I've just never seen this as an issue.

@@MaxArcher755 seems YT deleted my reply. How odd. The Gnome software app on Fedora 41 distinguishes between system and app updates already, and I've never really received any update notifications because I set it to automatically update on its own. It's something that has already been addressed so idk man, just seems a bit nitpicky to me. It's also a matter of preference in the sense that many people actually prefer centralised app and update management and find apps managing their own updates to be a bit annoying. I personally don't like it when I try to open an app only to be met with an update screen and prefer centralised update management.

@@MaidenLoaf *shrug* If you don't see it as a problem, that is completely orthogonal to other people seeing it as a problem.

@@MaxArcher755 that's flippant. If I'm saying I dont understand *why* it's a problem, I'm not saying it's not a problem, and perhaps I'd like to understand how the existing feature set does not mitigate it.
