@axlodd what makes it interesting is how malware could be distributed. Imagine "free photoshop for Linux in one simple command" google result lol. I expect it to be somehow like that. I really don't see an obvious way to make alot of linux users install malware, like most people get their software from reos, and if they install some binary from net they don't run it as root, which makes it too easy to wipe it later. Looking forward to see what skids will have to come up with.
@superslash72547 ай бұрын
The problem isn't lack of good software, it's that distros go out of their way to screw over userspace and make the simplest things a nightmare. There's a reason Torvalds himself said that linux will never go anywhere until a big company takes over a distro and forces it to stop abusing users and actually work painlessly. On windows you download a program and it just works. On linux you've got to pray that it's on your distro, actively maintained, the dependencies don't conflict with anything else, and you aren't going to have something godawful like snap inflicted on you.
@lycanthoss7 ай бұрын
@superslash7254 I know wayland is still early, but I tried installing kubuntu on a separate SSD so I could dual boot, installed wayland session, tried 150% scaling (4K display) and a lot of things still looked blurry as hell or weren't scaling. Then I installed updates, turned off PC, reinserted RTX GPU (I took it out because I wanted to take out my NVMe, so that it installs GRUB properly on the SSD so that I could pick which OS to boot with the BIOS menu), after reinserting GPU and NVMe, I checked if Windows booted fine, then restarted to go into Linux. I think it kernel panicked while booting (it was stuck on a blinking dash, but it was not in terminal mode, and the last message was something like wrt: bad destination buffer) I think I'll just wait a few more years until I try Linux again.
@komram43967 ай бұрын
@@lycanthoss to me it looks like there was a problem with either wayland or gpu drivers. Error you discribed is wifi related kernel message, so I assume gui stuff wasn't able to start at all. I always wondered how am I doge all these errors. Well, I started at arch with KDE and week later I moved to I3 because terminal made more sense to me than KDE. So I guess I'm just "lucky" for using Linux "the right way" from the start. It kinda sucks when people get their system nuked by shit like that. It sucks even more when things like wayland, alot of distros made default, and nvidia, whom drivers couldn't be more pain to deal with, repel newcomers.

The two things keeping Linux from becoming usable to the masses are it's dependence on memorizing hundreds of terminal commands and how to use them to get most things done, and having 50 fucking distros. If there were only about 5 distros so much progress could be made because all the effort being split between 50 could be concentrated on 5. But nope, reinventing the wheel and every other invention 49 times is seen as the best solution.....

But those also work in windows and macos. Other way around : a lot you do on windows/mac cant be done on linux. Of course there a always possibilities and workarounds. But at some point its just too much. Ubuntu is fine but i cant get over how unstable KDE is.. Settings not opening until restart, entire desktop misalignment etc. And im just talking about the private aspect. When you need to get work done, there is no space for a glitched out system.

It's been ages since I've used Ubuntu but from when I used it I could do anything necessary. I've been using i3 and Cinnamon in Manjaro for the past few years and never really had issues with them beyond the initial configuration. That configuration could be standardized in a script at a company by the IT department during installation. I think the real thing people don't want to deal with is the slightly different but still breaking changes of user interface from Windows. For office staff used to those environments it would be a nightmare and the fact that it might be almost impossible to find an IT company that will do remote support for Linux workstations. A lot of critical software like Quickbooks won't run out of the box for example.
