To be honest, the one statement from Linus that ‘Russian trolls are on the wrong side of history’ after he was criticised by them for removing Russian kernel devs. Which sounds pretty arrogant from a Finnish person especially in relation to WW2 and the Cold War and Finland's role in the blockade of Leningrad under the Nazi Reich. Made him look a bit like a stupid and uneducated person. The critics against Linus are still valid tbh, he shouldn´t have bogged down to some goverment, he only showed that linux is goverment controlable as everything else which people dont understand for now is a huge bummer.

I will switch as soon as it is usable, if ever. I just tried it the first time again after ~10 years and I'm really disappointed about how much is still broken on the desktop, how there's even more fragmentation now (from DEs to package management), how there's still X11 and an unfinished alternative that has been in the works for over 16 years .... I mean opening a 7z archive that should open in a second taking minutes, flickering/GPU driver issues, broken drag & drop, logout not actually logging out, system hangs, and still a completely hostile "just run that command in a shell and edit this obscure config file" end-user experience.

I'd like for 2025 that the Rust Wars are over. I'm not a programmer, I'm just a Certified Opinionologist, so I can't tell if it's more secure, if the security features are overrated, etc. What I do know is that the Rust based projects I follow are all snappy and solid, Cosmic, Asahi Lina's drivers. So, can we make peace and be friends? I'm pretty ignorant but I do know one thing, people that are 100% in favour or against something, unwilling to even listen to others' point and preferences, and mainly the people that take it as a personal cause, are wrong. Not a fan of programmers that don't even stop to read code that isn't in Rust, and not a fan of crusaders wanting to burn Rust heretics at the stake. From an outsider's perspective it doesn't seem like C is going anywhere, it's probably gonna keep being just as relevant as it is now. Even "dead" languages like Fortran or COBOL or Pascal are still somehow present, and there are less programmers that know those than needed. That's my 100% based on nothing opinion 🤷 P.S.: Happy holidays, merry Christmas, prosperous Sol Invictus and Saturnalia, whatever it is, hope everyone is doing well and hope that the ones that aren't have a better 2025 🫂

If you actually look at Fortran, it's surprisingly competent despite being so old. It's math and array tooling is honestly insanely good.

We're fairly certain it's less about the language (don't get it twisted, it *is* also the language) and more about the irksome ideologues running it. The Linux foundation and FOSS in general are already dealing with similar infectious agents so it's understandable to be unwelcoming to yet another vector/strain.

Wayland is still a complete joke. Basic functionality such as global hotkeys is still missing... It takes on average 3 - 5 years for things to be added... This is of course. Way to goddamn long. So long that some developers give up.

21 күн бұрын
All praise the Church of Wayland, adopt or die.
@Triro21 күн бұрын
@@ItzIcky Its needs to be implemented wayland side. No one uses the complicated hotkey portal. Something that no desktop wants to support is something that isn't a standard. Developers don't like it, and much prefer a wayland protocol. Merge request 216 fixes this (was another merge request, but the original author gave up because of waylands bureaucracy, and self centered interests that go against what users want.) It shouldn't be the compositors job to implement things, you're basically saying we should just return back to x11 days where things are fragmented as hell. The entire point of wayland is to be a single standardized set of protocols.
