Always great to come back to the lord of the rings. The entire cast and crew is first rate and their banter is so much fun. Orlando, Viggo, Dom, Billy, Elijah, the 2 Seans - the love and familiarity and affection is so obvious. Watching the bts, appendices, interviews and seeing the chemistry makes the movie so much more special. Something which feels lacking with the Hobbit movies... There seems to be a certain amount of awareness which saps the energy...

Replying years later, but had to comment since this is the first time I've seen someone say exactly what I think about the Hobbit movies as well, they just seem to lack the magic that they were able to create with LOTR. Of course the Hobbit as a story isn't as epic as LOTR, but I don't think that is what's lacking there, it's something undefinable that you can see clearly come of when you look at these making off, behind the scenes etc. videos of the LOTR. I only saw the first Hobbit movie, never watched the sequels even though LOTR and the Hobbit as books are among my all time favourites and I also think the LOTR movies are superb in their own right, but the Hobbit movies just didn't do it for me. Maybe I should give them now another chance, trying not to be as critical as the first time I saw it.

The Japanese must have kept wondering why the Hobbits were walking back home rather than toward Mordor.
