Linval Alphonso Thompson was born on October 12th, 1954 and raised in Kingston. However he subsequently lived with his mother in New York.
He embarked on a recording career in the USA around 1974 having recorded, `No Other Woman.' He then returned home where he recorded with Phil Pratt leading to sessions with Lee Perry at the Black Ark studio where he recorded `Kung Fu Man.' He then followed his success by working with Bunny Lee which resulted in his album debut; `Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks,' and in our clip he performs the title track.
He was then inspired to go independent and released, `I Love Marijuana' followed by a dub of the album as `Negrea Love Dub'. While still recording his own works he produced a series of hits with Dennis Brown, Cornell Campbell, The Wailing Souls, Barrington Levy, Trinity, Eek-A-Mouse, Freddie McGregor, Ranking Dread, and The Viceroys.
Many of his productions led to Scientist's best-known dub albums although an issue with Greensleeves Records led to the earlier release of `Scientist Meets The Space Invaders' being renamed `Linval Presents The Space Invaders' as well as encountering Pac Man amongst others.
In June 2024 he finally crossed over into the UK pop chart promoting the weed with, `Cultivator.'
