The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary's mission is to provide a self-sustaining African carnivore sanctuary for the purposes of wild species preservation through education, awareness and funding, especially pertaining to the rapid decline of large carnivores in Africa due to habitat loss, human-predator conflict, unscrupulous hunting, disease and their illegal trade.
To raise awareness, Kevin has now set up his KZbin Channel 'LionWhispererTV'. The channel is all about raising awareness about not only the declining numbers of lions, but also how this rapid decrease is happening. By watching these videos, you are directly contributing to our scheme of land acquisition.
Kevin captures the majority of his footage on GoPro cameras, allowing the viewer to get as close as possible to the lions.
By doing this, Kevin hopes to give people an insight into the lives of these beautiful creatures and to let them see just what they can do to help. You can nearly touch them.

Lions are like Dingoes, Hyenas etc. Pretty much all intelligent animals. They are friendly to family. Everyone else they don't trust depending on how old they are. Wild lions can't afford to be trusting usually and thus default to aggressive and defensive behaviour. Kevin has cared for all the animals since they were all cubs and pups usually. That's why he can do this. Do not try this with wild lions who aren't used to people. You will get hurt. That said it goes to show that bar a few more pronounced behaviours big cats are just like domestic ones almost. They are only one gene difference from their bigger cat cousins.

@Fleisch Berg I have already used this exact scenario to explain that although sharks are not a threat to people under the right conditions, they are still wild and your 4xample sums it up perfectly. Despite what I have said Sharks are fully realised and independent individuals. It's up to them if they want to interact with people or not. So yes if a stranger confided in me and wanted a hug yes I would. If a shark came to me with a hook in it, u would help remove it. Wild animals offer consent just like humans do. You just have to be observant and understand body language and an animal's psychology.

Rifah Alam I feel the exact same! Despite how uncommon it is, I find Kevin's relationship with his lions more natural. It IS his job to care for them, but at the same time it feels like he's working WITH the lions. For example, as what was stated in the past videos I've seen, he doesn't have to constantly tranquilize the lions in order to get them to go in the truck. Their relationship is purely based on mutual respect and it is definitely an honour to be able to have a tiny glimpse of their lives!

@@ktin3 The thing is, his Method works for these lions in a sort of wildlife sanctuary who will not be reintroduced, or be part of a breeding program and need protecting from locals/canhunting etc. Other collections will require their Lions to fear humans and stay away, a lack of interaction will be better so they don;t see humans as a source of food or friendships, obviously no one wants to tranq lions to move them, but in some way the fact the lion needs to be shows their instinctive nature to defend themselves, so lets say a group of lions are reintroduced, they will be more inclined to stay away from humans. He's also not bounded by strict regulations which are there to protect keepers in other animal collections, Kev is such a nice modest guy, but he knows the seriousness of what hes doing every day risking his life with them.

You can slowly get your cat to accept you holding its tail. Just start with little touches and over time build up. A quicker way is to do it when your cat is feeding. Cats focus most of their attention on eating so don't pull away when you do something they normally dislike such as touching their paws or tail. They realize that what you're doing isn't a threat and isn't causing pain so get used to it fairly quickly.

Kevin holds the tail very briefly not unlike what your own domestic cat would tolerate for a few moments. Lions are a little different than other large or domesticated cats in that they are the only truly social cat. They love contact and companionship. Depend on each other for food and security. Most domestic cats tolerate contact with absolute limits which are easily observed. Trust is everything, even with your home tabby. They learn to trust you and their toleration goes up.

Mafumu and Vayetse had such a close bond as cubs. Mafumu really took care of Vayetse, watched out for him. It was like Vayetse was too gentle. When he was first introduced to the girls he hid behind Kevin.

This video was right on time! I'm going through some personal troubles and a Lion Whisperer video gives me a few minutes respite and a wonderful look at Kevin & the gorgeous lions. The story of this lion pride is well known to me as I've followed their progress from a documentary when Mufumu died and Vayetsi was pining, mourning for his brother. It brought me to tears to think of how sad he was. Then, Kevin & his team lovingly brought him two beautiful young lionesses, Livvy & Ginny, to help Vayetsi find closure to his grief and be a happy lion again. Now, they are all happy, a healthy, loving pride. It just shows how intelligent and emotional creatures that lions are; that they need to be protected, and treated with dignity and respect. Thanks to Kevin and the Lion Whisperer team, that message is being brought to the world.

Its interesting because a lion's character is more closer to that of a dog than a domestic cat. You can see they have a deeper connection to Kevin. They way they greet him and accepting him as family is uncanny to way a dog greets and also connects to humans. Ive never seen a house cat ever greet their owners the way Lions greet Kevin. There is definitely a mutual special bond built on respect and family. I wonder if these lions know that Kevin is there to help them and guide them.

jsong21 I am sure the big cats know that Kevin is there for them in so many ways. But I live with four cats and four dogs and all the cats follow me around the house just like the dogs. The cats want the same attention and affection but they stand on tables to attract my attention as I walk by. Not all the cats are the same, of course, but the ones that love cuddling are so much like my dogs that they run along beside them as we go from room to room. Yeah, it is a bit strange at my home.

Also, as you said, dogs show much more affection to humans than cats do, which is why these lions also remind me of my dog, when I play with him or take him out for a walk... exact same reaction as these beautiful lions.

I have owned several house cats over the past decade, and it's not unusual at all for them to greet me the way these lions greeted Kevin; jumping in my lap, rubbing their heads against me, etc. It depends on the depth of the bond you have with a particular cat.

They're aware. Dragging Kevin to the ground would be a cake walk if that's what they intended but they are playing. In a more r cent video he sp aka about a few he has to be careful of because they get far to excited and have harmed him, example he used was whip lash for a week.
