Lion's Mouth Cave: Ancient Artwork in Utah

Lion's Mouth Cave is a shallow alcove located in the Dixie National Forest, west of Cedar City, Utah. It's a popular destination for a short and easy hike with stunning views and historical significance.
The name comes from the sandstone knoll that the cave is in. The knoll resembles a crouching mountain lion, and the reddish brown color of the sandstone is similar to a mountain lion's fur.
The main attraction of Lion's Mouth Cave are the pictographs found inside the cave. Pictographs are red and yellow ochre-colored figures painted on the rock walls. The figures depict simple drawings, including an anthropomorphic figure, a snake-like figure, and tick marks. Unfortunately, some visitors vandalized the pictographs in an attempt to "improve" their look.
The hike to Lion's Mouth Cave is an easy 0.8-mile out-and-back trail. The trail is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it a great option for families with young children or hikers of all experience levels. The round trip distance is only about a half mile, and the elevation gain is minimal. The trail ascends a gentle slope and then has a short, easy scramble up the rocks to get into the alcove.
Here are some tips for hiking to Lion's Mouth Cave:
Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, as the trail can be rocky in some spots.
Bring plenty of water, especially during the hot summer months.
Be respectful of the pictographs and other cultural resources.
There is no shade at the cave, so be sure to wear sunscreen and a hat on sunny days.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail.
