What are you focusing on in 2022? Let me know what you would like to see on this channel in the New Year! (Comment below)

My tactic is to try and grow youtube and get people clicking links to my Spotify or youtube music. My 2nd album comes out Jan 2022 and again will be pushing it on social media. I also need to consider more of tiktok.

@Anything’s Possible Music That's a great idea! *Don't be afraid to have your KZbin channel be about OTHER things* (not strictly a music channel) because the most important thing is to share your personality. It's crazy how many people viewing _this_ channel eventually check out my Spotify without me even asking them. I'm sure the same can be true for you no matter what topic you cover on your channel!! Just a bit of advice from someone who's been doing KZbin for a while :)

I just released my first single. I’ve yet to really do any marketing at this point and I’m already slightly discouraged. I thought of an analogy that’s helping me mentally: Think of your typical brick and mortar record store from yesteryear like The Wherehouse. If a band/artist released an album or single and just stuck it in the bin without any type of promotion whatsoever who’s going to know about it? That’s the equivalent of distributing your songs online to streaming platforms and walking away. Now I don’t take it so personally if people aren’t listening to my song because as you stated, fans aren’t going to just miraculously appear. To answer your question, I could care less about getting a record deal. There’s no need in this day and age and I’ve seen enough artists get screwed by their labels. Sure, way back when it sounded so cool to get signed by someone like Warner Bros. but those days are long gone

That's a really great analogy. You're totally right. Back in the day the record label would pay for a big poster to be in that record store window...(to continue the analogy). Luckily, we NOW have the same exact tools at our disposal to draw attention to our music (social media like TikTok, Facebook ads, playlists, email lists, etc.) I'm glad that you're not focusing on getting signed-I would say that in 2022 try to master one of those traffic gathering tools that I mentioned above (learning TikTok or Facebook ads for example) and you can start directing fans to the "bin" your music is in :)

Very beginning stages of developing a music career with my fiancé! This is great man! Everything you said is just reinforcing my belief in being an independent artist!

low key a part of me is happy these vids are slept on, the other part of me is wondering why this doesn't have a million views. All the indie artist I see out in the world and none want to spend the time finding awesome channels like this, more good info for me I guess lol. thanks a bunch for sharing some of your thoughts its so easy to get so focused on just Spotify plays, there are many other avenues to get paid, its just tricky to find them

Thanks for the info! You're really on point about making it to a record label and still needing to do your own marketing. You likely won't get much help with PR, marketing or growing your fanbase even if you get signed. The labels have been struggling to keep up with the changes in the industry, and it seems like they're signing on more artists than they can tangibly market appropriately in hopes one of them will break out and make them some money. I'm not trying to bash record labels, by the way - I couldn't imagine the challenges in trying to run a small label these days. But it's definitely something to consider when mapping out how to move forward as an artist.

Right on. If you are looking for a record deal, anything you find will totally suck. But when a deal comes looking for you, then you might have a good deal. Good deals are very rare these days. I don’t know many signed artist that are happy with their deals. And more and more we are seeing artists signing with labels and retaining full ownership of their masters and publishing. Labels are now willing to take on only the distribution and marketing because they know they are screwed without the many great artists that don’t really need them.

I would way rather stay independent and make it the way you talk about. If I’m doing it all without a label that would be a lot better. Thanks for the video bro

Personally for my artists, I encourage them to work yo grow a fanbase to the point that labels would be interesting. The goal should be to grow to a place where signing or staying independent is an option. I think there are benefits to both.

Surely it's pure luck if someone finds you or not? I sem to only get streams when I put links around on social media etc or use playlist curators. If I do nothing, I get nothing. How does someone appear higher on search results? But enough of me moaning. Best of luck to you, your channel and fellow spotify musicians. Let's rock in 2022.
@IndieMusicAcademy
@IndieMusicAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Yes there is an element of luck of course... but the more traffic streams you set up it's almost like getting more chances to "roll the dice". So it's a function of "Luck x Effort = number of fans." You want to have so much traffic and visibility that luck is almost negated because the dice is being rolled so often that you're guaranteed to roll a "7" at some point!! The other rolls don't matter. Hope that Vegas analogy made sense! :)

I'm still waiting for somebody to tell me a way to market myself as somebody who is blind. Tiktok doesn't seem to be it because TikTok is not accessible for people who are blind. Besides I don't want to use TikTok because TikTok is for young kids and I want a mature fanbase.

Thank you IMA! Back in the early early 90s Alternative music had become main stream. On radio. I and others would send off for a record catalog right before nirvana. INDIE cos. SUBPOP, 4AD, Touch and Go,sst.... I wanted music first. Pick mid tones bands. Melodic. The first nirvana album available in the record cos catalog. I had drumed in seattle. When i was very young. Example modest mouse style of music. I did have the birds and worms song cd before a lot. And their change up. I had pinhead gunpowder record. The lead singer of green day first recordings. West Bay. Emo!!! I would never buy an aerosmith cd. I listened to college radio! Thanks. No to iheart. Righteousness! Tadpole. Unknown. Be careful.

What are the most common services or goods that will draw that solitary fan to patreon for $12/month consistently for 1 year outside of (for example) releasing a 12 track album every month?

You're doing honorable work helping a fellow artist with their marketing, I applaud you!!! and would encourage you to take a look at either the 8020 Music Business Crash course, OR the free workshop (both linked in the description). Here at IMA, we want to help artists with their marketing as much as possible and would love to teach you! Thanks for the comment Colin and hope to see you in one of the trainings!!
