I remember as a kid riding on those ancient International school busses from the late 90s early 2000s. Super loud diesel engine, always had to yell to my friends on there, and the rumble was a whole different scene! Despite being in IL, we had no AC, and no seatbelts. It was kind of fun to sit in the back and get tossed around over the bumps, that is for sure. I will miss the old busses, and the general loud diesel rumble of them, but I guess EV busses are the way of the future. My University currently has diesel shuttles (regular busses) to and from downtown Chicago (second campus) and it really can be hard to talk to my classmates when the bus is in high gear rolling down Lake Shore Drive.

As an EV enthusiast, I’m curious why there’s an option for the diesel heater in colder climates? Especially since Lion is marketing this as a zero emissions bus? Does it have to do with possible range impact? I’m from one of the hotter states where we don’t get snow in the winter, so I’m genuinely curious?
@TheLIONElectric2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Diesel heating is indeed a need in colder climate conditions as electrical heating directly taking energy from the batteries would greatly diminish the range. However, to put things into perspective, from our early data collection of the vehicles' performance, the diesel heater on our vehicles takes around 850 L of diesel per year, while an internal combustion engine school bus takes about 12,000 L of diesel per year - quite a significant difference. Furthermore, the energy-dense diesel used for our heaters is converted at about 90% into heat, while the diesel used for propulsion of ICE school buses is only used at about 33% of its energetic capabilities towards mobility of the vehicle. The next 33% (roughly) is lost through heat dispersion, and the other 33% (roughly) is lost directly through the exhaust via chemistry. But again, to answer your question, it's about saving range! ⚡

Even if the grid was entirely oil-powered, it would still be better than a diesel bus because power plants are more efficient than combustion engines inside of a vehicle.
